Sikhs Shun Meat and Alcohol at Weddings Friday 3rd of October 2008 Panthic Weekly News Bureau New Delhi (KP) – Taking a positive step to ensure Gurmat maryada is followed at Sikh weddings, the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) has passed directives asking Sikhs all across Delhi and other places to boycott marriages in which meat or alcohol are served. This latest directive by the DSGMC is also in accordance to Akal Takhat Sahib Maryada which applies to all Sikhs, irrespective of their background, affiliation, demographics or social status. The call to boycott such weddings is an interesting move as Sikhs based in New Delhi mostly belong to affluent families that are able to afford large budget weddings. Furthermore, the DSGMC manages over 350 Gurdwaras in Delhi and all their management committees have been asked to comply with the newly passed directive. The new directives uphold the common norm that events in which meat and alcohol are served are against the standards of Gurmat. In addition, those weddings that aren't over by the evening are also not to be attended . Traditionally, all Sikhs were of the belief that weddings are to be kept as simple as possible, but as times have progressed, a lot of ego has entered into the Sikh folds and our practices have gone astray from basic principles of Gurmat. In order to follow societal norms, even the average income earners have to take out loans to pay for their daughters' weddings. In simple terms, such practices support the dowry system and female feticide, two principals which were both looked down upon by the Sikh Gurus. According to the Committee President Paramjit Sarna, even though the Panthic Maryada asks Sikhs to shun such worldly practices, there has only been an increase in recent years as the responsible Sikh organizations have not played their part in spreading Gurmat at a large scale. The worst thing about such weddings is that they put a burden on the shoulders of the bride's family. As the brides' families have to cope with the illegal demands of dowry, they have to bury the ultimate costs of ritualistic and social gatherings. Sikhs who do not comply with these directives will not be issued wedding certificates from any of the 350 Gurdwaras based throughout Delhi. Furthermore, weddings that include evening or night parties will also not be allowed to hold anand karaj ceremonies at Gurdwara Sahibs.

panthic weekly is biist...it is pro mann and anti sarna....no one has to remind that....and mann has always delivered speeches not actions....and no one reeli cares abt what u blabber in the parliament.....if he wants to work for sikhi then then y is he an mp in hindu india.....y is he working for the hindu govt. .....he could have stayed as the head of akali dal amritsar..and worked...as a sikh leader ...but he holds the importance of kursi over the religion.....and he went to jail not because of his panthic activities but because being and MP and meeting pro khalistan activists...if he was a normal sikh leader nothing would have happened but if u are a part of the indian governtment and u meet such ppl then it is an offend to the country...and mann is popular because ..he has free time to make his own websites...blogs....and post goods things abt them.....akali dal delhi doesnt have time because akali dal punjab is busy in state politics...same with akali dal amritsar...so the work load of the sikh issues is reeli on akali dal delhi....the kar sewa of all gurudwaras in pakistan have been done by dsgmc....installationof palki sahib...what has mann done exept for speeking in front of ppl who dont noe abt sikhism ( in parliament) what character does mann have then...he is still working for the same government who tortured him and jailed him several times......lol

"The experts have commented on the length of Akshay's beard. They feel it would have been better if he had sported a full-grown beard. Their worry is that Akshay is a role model. And if young Sikhs see him with a trimmed beard, they may start emulating him," producer Vipul Shah said. "I agree with this misgiving. In fact, I've made an effort to justify Akshay's brief beard in the dialogues. In fact, when Akshay returns to his village at the end, he has the full traditional Sikh beard." Akshay's first photo shoot for Singh Is Kinng, releasing Aug 8, was without a beard. "But we realised our mistake and corrected it. Akshay grew a trimmed beard. That explains Akshay's bearded look for the past six months," said Shah who teamed up with him in last year's super hit comedy Namastey London. The actor wowed his fans as a rustic guy with a golden heart in Namastey London. So is Shah suggesting that the size of the beard determines the extent of an individual's religiosity? "I don't want to contest any community's religious beliefs. I'm here to make movies, not challenge or offend any community. So when the Sikh experts asked us for that one dialogue justifying Akshay's trimmed beard, I had no hesitation in respecting their sentiments. Now the Sikh experts are very happy. We sorted it all out in five days." The second thing that has made some Sikhs angry is a line of Gurbani recited wrongly. "It's just a case of a grammatical error, nothing else. I offered to re-shoot the scene. But Sikh leader Gurbachan Singh Bachchan and his colleagues saw the film and gave us a clean chit. "They said no need to re-shoot, just re-dub it. "The minute reports of protests by the Sikh community came out, we immediately decided to clear it. There was a report about Om Puri's turban, when he isn't even playing a sardarji. Then they wrote that I had to destroy 200,000 posters due to protests. Posters for Singh Is Kinng haven't even been printed." Shah later contacted the censor board that invited the Sikh experts. "Believe me, they didn't tamper with one shot. All they wanted was for us to add a dialogue saying cutting the beard is not the right thing to do." Last year, Shah's Namastey London courted controversy when Katrina Kaif entered the Ajmer Sharif wearing a short skirt. The Dargah committee had made it a rule to let no one enter the shrine in anything above the knees for both men and women. Shah had to re-shoot the whole sequence with Katrina in a full-length skirt.
