  1. I laughed so hard i started coughing out what seemed to be blood.... I'm going to sleep..... man that cracked me up! (I realized i need to get out more, if something like the above made me laugh so hard)
  2. Sorry Veer Jee, When I posted I was sorta talking to Mehtab Veer Jee. Sorry. I still dont get it, there is nothing hygienic about it, I asked my dad why he used to tie his beard his answer was simply: "I'm so used to doing it" However, I'm glad to say, he is starting to leave it open (slowly, but surely)
  3. Thank you veer jee, but I had that speech quite some time ago... However I would like to tell you that it was a success! Lots of people were very interested and random people in the hallways asked me questions on Sikhism (which I answered quite correctly!) In fact, I have undertaken typing up a book that deals with Sikhism's Religion and Science that I will be posting here soon, so that all of us can talk it out about everything... I just realized how the last comment had nothing to do with the first, oh well, I had to spread the knowledge that I would be doing that.
  4. There is an important book that I KNOW you ALL need to read: Lost in History (1984 Reconstructed) By: Gunisha Kaur Its not about Sant Bhindranwale (though it has a lot of information about him), but about what you are all discussing here in this thread (which is more about 1984 than it is about Sant Jernail Singh Bhindranwale. Her book is emotional, concise, and breve. Her facts are unbiased (even though her emotions aren't). And please lets not say Hindus were against Sikhs. Lets not forget it was Hindus in the Gov't that were trying to kill Sikhs. Many people were saved numerous times in 1984 by Hindus they never knew about. Many were saved by their Hindu neighbors (who had as much to lose if they were caught). You can e-mail Gunisha Kaur at Gunisha@Cornell.edu Just Me 2 Cents
  5. Bijla Veer Jee, if you are still interested in learning more about the Sikh Religion and how it connects with science there is an excellent book by GS Sidhu titled Sikh Religion and Science (like.... duh..). If you can't purchase the book you can wait for it to appear online in the General Forum. I can't type it all at once, but i'll be posting tidbits of information that people can discuss and work on. I'm very glad for your strengthening of your faith. Its an excellent story and one that I will remember in the future. Just a quote I thought I'd share about Einstein: "The human mind is not capable of grasping the Universe. We are like a little child entering a huge library. The walls are covered to the ceilings with books in many different tongues. The child knows that some one must have written these books. It does not know who or how. It does not understand the languages in which they are written. But the child notes a definite plan in the arrangement of the books -- a mysterious order which it does not comprehend, but only dimly suspects" -Science, Philosophy & Religion: A Symposium (1941 chap 13)
  6. I'm making a couple of assumptions here so fix me if i'm wrong: 1) you live somewhere in the Middle East..? 2) There are quite a few singhs that leave it open in the ME (that's not an assumption :umm: ) If you have to tie it for reasons such as you're a doctor and you have to tie it for hygiene then go fir it (there are many that do so). But you're just in college man, take it easy let it flow. Respect your parents but as Berkeley said: "Do not believe in the words of a teacher unless you yourself are convinced of the truth contained in his words." So mind what your parents say, but don't blindly do what they say.
  7. Thank you for the page, i will look more closely at this (off topic... what? there are people killing there daughters in panjaab? are you kidding?)
  8. NOOO!! you started it again, though your point makes sense :umm:
  9. I believe this is a very personal issue for many people here. Once again i'll state this: It is about being fit and healthy. Not really being overweight or being fat. Don't forget that some of us are fat hereditarily (is that a word?), but are these fat people unhealthy or fat? If not, then it's okay in my belief. Fat people can have stamina, strength, vitality, and energy! But seriously, if you are "fat" you do need to work out, Gurbani says it, Dietricians, Doctors, Physicians, average "Joe" will tell you to be fit and healthy. End of Discussion.
  10. I think I'm going too far by saying this but I’m going ahead anyways. Let’s think back now shall we? We’re in the 1600s….. We’re in India…. Steel/gold/silver is obviously in abundance. No, I’m just kidding. Steel is basically iron with the impurities taken out and with a greater abundance of carbon. Iron…. Easy for poor people to get. I mean, can anyone honestly find a line in SGGS that says that karas have to be made of Sarab Loh? Because I’ve been searching since yesterday and I still haven’t found it. Who makes these rehats? I mean….. these things are symbols. You will not become a manmukh just because you don’t have an iron kara. It was just very easy to get iron karas back then in India. Same deal with kacharas, why did people wear kacharas when they took a bath? Was it because if you took off the kachara you lost some type of special power? People, let’s wake up! It was because back then, they took showers in the same area, it is just common decency to wear a kachara back then. My opinion is that you definitely DON’T have to wear a sarabh loh kara. Though a sarabh loh kara has many ADVANTAGES over steel, gold, silver, etc (reactivity and strength not being any of them). Just my 2 cents. -Bhajneet PS – please, if you did find a line in SGGS, or if I said something extremely wrong, please tell me.
  11. Exactly! If you got a trashed car from a rental system and returned it even better. I mean... the rental dude (God) would be so happy that his client (you) fixed a trashed car that he had (your body) I think I took that at a bad angle.. Of course you can be fat genetically (i am), but you have to be fat (like 20% for men, methink.. or was it 15%?). The thing that i was striving for wasn't overweighteness, it was being fit. I'm fat, yet I'm the one in the family that shovels the snow, mows the lawn, and does all the blue-collar jobs.. where as my brother (thin as a stick) does all the calculating stuff in the house (like helping me with my hw) Did I mention my brother was younger than me..?
  12. Well.. if you guys wanted to get all scientific about it... 1) to build up your health you must excercise 3-7 times a week) 2) once in shape you may need to work out only once a week 3) working out helps you mentally (no joke) If you go down to IN (i believe? i'll have to check on that later) you'll notice they have the largest PE system down there. 2 years after they had the program (same teachers same everything else, basically) the children's grades went up. And have still been going up. The reason being is that when you workout 1) you stimulate the body (and therefore your mind) 2) by stimulating the body&mind you increase blood flow throughout
  13. well i got to get some new karas (and i loved these ones, real nice) then.
  14. Don't forget that some people have allergic reactions to Iron, so for them to be religious they wear the steel ones (dunno bout silver/gold). I can also understand from one point why you would want a silver one (reacts less with other elements and therefore stays shiny). But i wouldn't push it that far (meaning yeah, i get it but.... why? plus, platinum reacts even less than Ag and Au...) And I dont want to sound brash, but what is against having grooves in your kara? I mean.... Everyone has them... i'm not kidding, how many people have you seen with a cross section of a circle? Mine has a groove kind of thing (the middle portion sticks out a bit)... I dont get that bit. Does it say anything about wearing 2 karas? I myself like to keep myself in balance :umm: (my first smiley..... woot!)
  15. Even modern doctors and dieticians preach moderation and selection in eating. Guru Nanak Dev Jee preached "the pleasures of foods are false. Eat not that with which the body is ruined, and wickedness and corruption enter into the mind" [see A]. The general instruction to the Sikhs is to eat simple food in moderation and to avoid too many rich (in cholesterol, and etc.?) foods [see B]. "Fareed, my bread is simple and hard, and hunger is my appetizer. Those who eat buttered bread (food rich in cholesterol) will suffer terrible problems" [see C]. D'oh! alright monotheistic religon GGS 5ks Gurdwaras and Langar 10 Gurus (human) Talk about the 5 evils (kaam krodh lobh moh hankar) Dont eat meat/drink wine/intoxicants Wake up early and do naam jap Help those that you can always always give 10% to the community (usually g/ws) Honest work life Never stop learning (fill your vessel with knowledge) Dont eat excessive food. I think thats 2 mins, lol, thanks guys.
  17. this is gonna sound weird, but i wasted a complete 15 seconds watching your avatar. It took me like 2 secs to figure it out.... the other 13 i just watched it....
  18. I know its late, but if anyone could tell me some key things to point out to my class tommorrow about Sikhism it would be highly helpful. The speech itself is like 2 mins, so not too much. This is what I have so far: Talk about the 5 evils (kaam krodh lobh moh hankar) Dont eat meat/drink wine/intoxicants Wake up early and do naam jap Help those that you can always always give 10% to the community (usually g/ws) Honest work life Never stop learning (fill your vessel with knowledge) Dont eat excessive food. If it helps in any way we're reading Siddartha, Which is about a Hindu i believe. I'm doing this speech (as is another Hindu girl) on my religion to shed light on Indian Relgions.
  19. Why not Vaheguroo everytime you have... (but, i think i get what you mean)
  20. You dont even have to look to Gurbani to answer this question. (I think i worded my last post a bit... bad). An Excerpt from pages 78/79 of Herman Hesse's Siddartha (under Part 2: Samsara): "It happened more frequently that after a merry evening, he lay late in bed the following morning and felt dull and tired. He would become annoyed and impatient with Kamaswami bored him with his worreis. He would laugh too loudly when he lost at dice. His face was still more clever and intellectual than other people's, but he rarely laughed, and gradually his face assumed the expressions which are so often found among rich people--the expressions of discontent, of sickliness, of displeasure, of idleness, of lovelessness. Slowly the soul sickness of the rich crept over him." AND "The world had caught him; pleasure, covetousness, idleness, and finnally also that vice that he had always despised and scorend as the most foolish--acquisitiveness. Prperty, possesions and riches had also finnally tarpped him. They were no longer a game and a toy; they had become a chain and a burden." Wow, dont sleep in and get up at amrit, and stay away from maya. That's 2 stones in one.
  21. Umm.. I'm not that political, but you and I, we're both humans. You and I, we're both of the same religion. I believe that all Sikhs are humans and from the same religion. So.... why can't we unite? You lost me Veer Jee, Bhajneet
  22. I still think that you have said it in a bad way. It's just not right. He told us to do 7: 5 in the 'morn and 2 at night. Just in case someone else got the wrong idea. On the subject of waking up in the morning. I've been doing it for a long time, and it's an excellent feeling. You do better in school, You work out more, it makes the body much healthier than you realize. Hardest thing for a kid to do is wake up on his own, therefore get your parents involved and your siblings as well. Alarm Clock *SCHWAK* vaheguroo... vaheguroo... vaheguroo... vaheguroo... [turns water on] vaheguroo... vaheguroo... vaheguroo... [gets out] vaheguroo... vaheguroo... vaheguroo... does path. Best 1.5 hours of my day right there.
