    Sucham

Someone asked me this a while back and the best way I could explain sucham in food was to think of it as advanced hygiene. For example... In my thaal, I got my daal roti etc... before I start to eat this is sucha (presuming whoever made it washed hands etc first) and my hands are also suchey (presuming I washed them). When I start to eat and my hands are going in mouth and in daal on roti etc, then my germs etc on now all over the food and my hands... therefore my hands, roti, daal and therefore thaal are no longer suchey/clean. For me to then share my food with someone or to share contact (pass someone else a roti) is spreading your germs... At the very least, makes perfect sense hygienically

    I Kissed A Girl

I'd say you've blown this way out of proportion and your making a mountain out of a molehill... Most importantly you've realised how easy it can be for one thing to lead to another. Don't beat yourself up about what happened but just be careful in future and try not to put yourself in such positions where something could potentially happen...
  4. Vaheguru Jee Ka Khalsa, Vaheguru Jee Kee Fateh SinghniKaur If you are talking as Singh# above says in terms of sexual relationships outside of marriage, then I think this is quiet clear in Sikhi - its forbidden... If you are talking about the love/affection you show your family, your friends or others close to you then I think there is nothing wrong with that. I'd probably be bit worried if you didnt... I think it gets a little confusing when it comes to attachment. Yes, you are going to be attached to those around you but too much attachment is maybe not a good thing, basically what I mean by that is that you should try and remember that it is Vaheguru who put them here and when Vaheguru decides to take them back or move them on we should try and stay within His Will and stay in Chardi Kala.
  5. Looking forward to the event... BTW - You may want to change/rephrase your poll question... "Was Sant Baba Jarnail Singh Ji Khalsa Bhindrawale right for seeking refuge at Akaal Takht Sahib?" Yes, they were right to be there... However, they were not there seeking refuge. Seeking refuge means going/turning to place of safety. Sant Jarnail Singh Jee Khalsa Bhindranwale and the other Singhs were at the Akal Takht ready to give their lives defending the impending attack on the Darbar Sahib Complex and on Sikhi.

    Kirtan Seva

_Moorakh_ (original poster) - I completely agree with what you are saying... However, For Moorakhs like me, our mind is nowhere close to being under control and is always wandering. It would be amazing to be at that ability where we have no distinction between who is singing Gurbani and immerse ourselves in the shabad but at my current level I find that some Gurmukh pyarey have been blessed with the ability to grab peoples attention whilst doing kirtan / parchaar and this helps me 'join with' the Shabad more. This can be bought down to a combination of Maheraj's Kirpa, charisma, style, tune, voice etc and because of that, you will get 'favourite' kirtani / jathey, some with bigger 'fan base' than others. My utmost respect to all Kirtaniya / Parchaaraks as with Vaheguru's kirpa they are helping us get closer to Shabad. As written in Bhai Gurdaas Jee's Vaara: ਧੰਨ ਗੁਰੂ ਧੰਨੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਿਆਰੇ॥ Blessed is the Guru and also blessed are his beloved ones. At the end of the day, I think we should listen to whatever helps control the mind and brings us closer to the Shabad / Vaheguru. If that happens to be someone with a big 'fan base' already like Baba Ranjit Singh then there is nothing wrong with that whatsoever.
  7. I know numerous monay (cut hair) people who have been out of work for many many months now, as phaji says above, its to do with the current financial climate... hair, no hair is nothing to do with it. Stay strong and don't think about comprising your real wealth, your Sikhi, which will help you in this world and the next for material wealth which comes and goes in an instant. Maybe Vaheguru has given this time off work for a reason... spend your time wisely.
  8. I'm sure there is normally is an Amrit Sanchar every year at the Barsi. Posters should be out soon though and full details will be on there.
  9. I thought that was kinda weird too. Was hitting refresh a few times making sure it wasn't still showing the previous Hukamnama...

  13. Vaheguru Jee Kaa Khalsa, Vaheguru Jee Kee Fateh... We are fortunate enough to be working alongside the East Midlands Police Force and will be discussing with them and training them regarding issues surrounding Sikhs in the community. This is where we also need your help! Please share your views and/or past experiences (good or bad) you may have had with the Police Force. We also need a cohort of Sikhs within the East Midlands area who have views about and/ or experiences with the police, who we will ask to come in on one of the training sessions that will take place in the beginning of October. This will allow us to work with the Police Force to help overcome such issues and improve the service offered to the Sikh Community. If you would like to come and express your views please ring Harvir Kaur on 0115 9158 836.
  14. What are your contact details Tarunjeet Singh - wanted to pass details to local Gurdwara...
  15. Important Update Subaig Singh has been in Hospital for the last few days with a blood infection and is still currently in hospital. He is slowly getting better, however, he will not be able to fight in tomorrow's competition. Sorry to anyone bought tickets specifically to watch him fight. Thoughts are with you Subaig - get well soon!
  16. Personally, I think that the whole concept of dowry/'gifts' is wrong on soo many levels... Sikhi wise - it is totally rejected and should not be done... "Sri Guru Gobind Singh Jee says, the Sikh that marry's his daughter to a Sikh, and does not take any money, He is a true Sikh of mine and will reach my abode in Sachkand." (Bhai Sahib Singh Rehatnama p.160) Sri Guru Raam Daas Ji in Siree Raag on Ang 78 of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Jee says: ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਮੇਰੇ ਬਾਬੁਲਾ ਹਰਿ ਦੇਵਹੁ ਦਾਨੁ ਮੈ ਦਾਜੋ ॥ O my father, give me the Name of the Lord God as my wedding gift and dowry. Give me the Lord as my wedding gown, and the Lord as my glory, to accomplish my works. Through devotional worship to the Lord, this ceremony is made blissful and beautiful; the Guru, the True Guru, has given this gift. Across the continents, and throughout the Universe, the Lord's Glory is pervading. This gift is not diminished by being diffused among all. Any other dowry, which the self-willed manmukhs offer for show, is only false egotism and a worthless display. 4॥ O my father, please give me the Name of the Lord God as my wedding gift and dowry. ||4|| The Damdami Taksal Rehat Maryada even states that anyone 'who receive money for the marriage of their daughters and take dowry' should not be associated with at all.
  17. As mentioned previously - I have already set up by direct debit for the Sikh Channel and think it is a great channel. However, some sangat raised questions around its finances, the need for regular detailed financial information, its relationship with BritAsia, how Sangat should be involved in its board etc etc. Personally to me, all of that makes no difference... however it does matter to some others. So I can't see why Sikh Channel doesn't just go ahead and answer all these queries and clear everything up. Maybe do a live phone show with the 'owners' where all questions could finally be put to rest.
  18. I think (and know for a fact for some Gurdwaras) that one reason why some Gurdwara's have not offered support is the lack of complete transparency by the Sikh Channel. There have been many questions posed by the sangat and most are still unanswered. When we give as individuals to a cause - it is totally up to us, BUT when an Organisation or Gurdwara gives out the sangats money, it is their duty to ensure they know it is fully accounted for
  19. At a camp just recently, we split the youth into small groups and left them to see how could make the best Nishaan Sahib. Gave them: Paper Cups Straws Sellotape String Orange Cloth Markers Scissors Helped break the ice between people in the groups and everyone enjoyed it and had fun plus everyone learnt about the Nishaan Sahib
  20. Not a cynic (already set up my direct debit before people start) but can totally understand why people would want to see where their money is going. It would be nice if Sikh Channel could show their financial break down more prominently on their website and maybe also break down their income - How much of that income is personal direct debits? How much is Gurdwara/Business Donations? How much is advertising income etc...
