  1. Thank you! Been waiting aages for this
  2. Can't recommend anyone but if you are in the UK, then do not use 5 Rings Productions. We did for our wedding and regretted it.
  3. A very good point my dad made recently is, are these interfaith marriages even legal? Each marriage certificate has a section saying: (see example marriage certificate here) And any Gurdwara that conducts an Anand Karaj fills it out roughly as below: This legal document signed by Gurdwara committees states the ceremony was conducted to the rites and ceremonies of the Sikh Religion. However we all know, the Sikh stance on this is: So, are Gurdwaras not complying with Sikh rules breaking the law by falsifying legal documents?
  4. Good decision and needs to be pushed and implemented somehow. When Kesdharis/ Amritdharis are not being represented at management level at Gurdwaras you know things aren't good. In our cities main Gurdwara, out of a 15 member committee, only 3 people are Kesdhari/Amritdhari. This is not through lack of trying, the problem here is votes rule and so: 1 - More popular your surname, more chance of getting in 2 - As Amritdhari/ Kesdhari are minority (means massive opportunity for parchar), the majority through propoganda see Amritdhari/Kesdhari as fundamentalists, militants. Committe members have said, Gurdwaras are for din saud (celebrations/ occasions/ social), parchar there is minimal. The last election where Amritdhari Singhs stood about 7 years ago, rumour was going about they were sending money to Singhs in India to buy tanks?! 2 - Social circle of drinkers/eaters is bigger = more votes
  5. I see a lot of answers on here saying things like this but let me guess - 1) your not married, 2) your some next level mahapurkh Me and my wife are Amritdhari and I spoke to some very chardi kala Gursikhs before I got married last year and they all said contraceptives were fine. You need love and intimacy in a relationship and it brings you closer together. If you are not planning on starting a family straight away, then use contraceptives. It is not failproof but it is the safest way to be intimate without starting a family.
  6. All 6 Gurdwaras in Nottingham also have tables and chairs with around half also having a tiny bit of space for pangat
  7. I only heard about people standing up during Anand Karaj for the first time last year. My Anand Karaj was coming up soon so I asked various elder chardi kala Gursikhs and all of them were very clear in stating that nowhere in Sikh history has it ever been documented/ mentioned/ passed down that Anand Karaj has been done stood up. Looking around, other Maryadas like Taksal Maryada also all state Anand Karaj should be completed sitting down as per the norm. My findings led us to carry out our Anand Karaj as per the norm (sat down in between).

  9. We did 2 Krav Maga courses at Sikh Community & Youth Services (SCYS) Nottingham a few years back. One for ladies, one for guys. Was great and I would and I think everyone else on the course, would highly recommend it.
  10. Heard from Singhs in India that this Singh in the video being arrested isn't totally there in the head. Would explain it...
  11. What do you mean by smaller sects? If you talk of like the naamdharis for example, then they do not fall under the Panth. If you talk of jathebandia like Taksalis etc then I think you'll find that although there are minor differences between them, they have not split away. They do not go against the Panthic Maryada and all fall under the Akal Takht. You can look at it in whichever way you like. I see the Panth getting stronger, more youth coming into Sikhi, more parchaar being done. They are many many amazing Gursikhs out there that live & breath Sikhi - Dhan Guru, Dhan Guru Pyarey.
  12. Any building in which Sri Guru Granth Sahib Jee resides is a Gurdwara/Gurughar, regardless of what we decide to label it is. And as such, it is every Sikhs duty to ensure that it adheres to the Akal Takht and its sandeshs, hukamnamas, gurmatas etc. These are Panthic decisions and we as a Panth should obey it. By the way, what is it your are trying to achieve or get at here? What problems is there in a Sikh/Sikh institution adhering to Akal Takht?
  13. Read about Akal Takht on wikipedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akal_Takht Akal Takht provides no funding for any Gurdwaras however it is every Sikhs duty to listen to and adhere to the rulings from Akal Takhat Sahib and the Panthic Rehat Maryada. Same goes for Gurdwaras and via the Maryada, it should influence pretty much every aspect of the Gurdwara.
  14. As S1ngh says above... if we get some other helpers too, then i'm on board. Too much to do alone but with helpers it should be fine
  15. lol @ calling it an assualt. Bhai Sahib saw it coming a gave that joker a good slap.
  16. I attended a SikhRI course called something along the lines of 'Becoming an Activist' a couple of years ago and was very impressed at Harinder Singhs fresh outlook and ability to get you to think about things we normally don't think about. He was also on BBC Asian Radio a few days ago talking about 1984 where he impressed me again with his intellectual abilities and knowledge. Co-incidently I was just listening to Harinder Singh on Youtube right now - See: - Have a look for yourself and see for yourself the sort of talks he does. Many posters make many accusations against him and SikhRI, I have not heard anything Anti-Gurmat from him myself.
  17. VJKK VJKF... For me and my Singhnee, pyaar had already been given between families when we all initially agreed to go ahead but we wanted to this to be approved/celebrated in front of Maharaj before the Anand Karaj (next year) - It all happening in front of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Jee Maharaj is what we'd class as the proper engagement. We are both Amritdhari and so didn't want anything like the standard kurmai and chunni so we read through the Rehat regarding this and here is what we finally ended up doing. We had a program at the Gurdwara attended by both sides - Asa dee Vaar Kirtan followed by Sukhmani Sahib Paath and then Katha and Kirtan. Started Asa Dee Vaar Kirtan at 7.30am and Sukhmani Sahib da Paath starting around 9.30am (although most sangat came for Sukhmani Sahib). Program finished after Kirtan and Katha at around 2.00pm I think it was. During the program, straight after the Ardaas & Hukamnama (but before the Kirtan & Katha) the Kurmai Shabads were sung, after which a couple of members (male members as I was sat on the guys side) of the girls family came to me gifting me with Dastaar, Sri Sahib, Pyaar and Mita (something sweet - I told em no daate thing lol, but misharee would do so that's what I got). This was then repeated in which couple of members of my family (again, female members just as its easier as Singhni is on ladies side so my mum, grandma) went to Singhni gifting her with a suit, Dastaar, Sri Sahib, Pyaar and some Mita (she got ladoo - why didn't I think of that, not fair lol). Seriously though, we all thought that Maharaj Kirpa Naal it went great. We invited a lot of sangat and it just seemed so peaceful and nice. It was all just very simple with no fuss or rush and think it showed equality on both sides. Anyways, hope thats helped you. Oh and congratulations!
  18. I'm a full time website developer... Quite busy though, have you got a deadline?
  19. Anyone here able to lucid dream? I read up a little bit about it a while ago but wasn't sure as to whether it was just make believe.
  20. Says 'USB and PS/2 Ports available' in the original post.
  21. First off, I have never been to this Gurdwara nor do I know about it... You talk about: why should English be put in place instead of Punjabi? - Article actually says 'The Punjabi language is also replaced with English, or at least translated so everyone can understand.' - Nothing wrong with translations and Sikhi to the Max. Sounds like it is used along side punjabi not instead of. and what's up with all those hand signals? - Go to any nursery, primary schools and see how young children learn, interactively. Seems this program once a month is aimed at younger children and for age group shown in the video, there is nothing wrong with this type of interaction/hand signals. If you want a playgroup go somewhere else - Sorry but that's totally the wrong mentality and the sort of mentality the keeps a lot of Gurdwara from progressing. I think Gurdwaras are places for all types of learning and ideally there should not only be kirtan, katha, seva, simran, sangat, pangat (spiritual), but also physical (gatka, sports, seva), educational (teaching, school help), social (old people day groups, gurdwara visits, trips) etc etc. Sikhi affects all aspects of your life and Gurdwaras should incorporate them all. So, in my opinion... It sounds like a great idea! Some nice pro-active forward thinking by the Gurdwara/Organisers, but don't just stop there, there is much more that can still be done. Well done though!
