  1. Thanks everyone...how about movies likes Bend it Like Beckham or The English Patient?
  2. What do you guys think of the movie Border? I heard its got a Sikh in it...
  3. Thanks for the responses so far everyone. :T: Gaddar definetely seems like a film that misrepresents Sikhs; I'll definetely use it for my paper. Does anyone else have any suggestions? It doesn't have to be Bollywood (although it is preferred)--if you have a short documentary on Sikhs in a positive OR negative light, it would be much appreciated. Anything would help. Thanks!
  4. WJKK WJKF A few months ago, I asked for help with Indian movies and received a lot of positive responses. Because of sikhsangat.com's help, I was able to successfully write a paper for my Indian Cinema and Society class on Maachis. For my next paper, I would like to write about the misrepresentation of Sikhs in Indian films. For this, I would appreciate any suggestions for any films with Sikhs in them, along with a few facts about the film (whether Sikhs are shown negatively or positively, brief plot summary, etc). I would appreciate any help. Thanks! WJKK WJKF
  5. My professor is Indian. His name is K. Hariharan. :umm:
  6. WJKK, WJKF I talked to my professor today, and when I suggested Maachis, he quickly agreed that the movie was a safe choice to analyze. Thanks for the help, everyone! It's very reassuring to know that many of you are eager to help others. Oh, and the reason why my professor, who is a filmmaker himself, thought Hawayein was poorly made was because it was "low budget with poor acting and a weak set." Thanks again! WJKK, WJKF
  7. WJKK, WJKF I'm taking a class on Indian Cinema, and one of our assignments is to find a movie that interests us and write a paper about it. I would like to write about a movie dealing with Sikhs. In fact, I was planning on using the movie Hawayein, but my professor said that the movie was poorly made. Does anyone have any suggestions or know about any other Indian movies about Sikhs (excluding Bend It Like Beckham)? Thanks! WJKK, WJKF
  8. There have been so many deaths of influential Sikhs this year...Bhai Joginder Singh Ji Talwara, Bhai Rajinder Singh Ji, Bhai Parminder Singh Ji, Bhai Charanjeet Singh Ji, Bibi Rena Kaur Ji...and now Yogi Ji...
  9. If all Sikhs have the last name of Singh/Kaur, how do you know if you're marrying your relative or not? :T:
  10. Veer Ji / Bhan Ji, You are obviously quite articulate, and many of your ideas are fantastic; however, your thoughts of Gandhi are a bit incorrect. It is a fact that Gandhi learned his pacifism and techniques for peace from SIKHS, not the other way around. It is also a fact that Gandhi wasn't a very scrupulous man; in fact, he had a serious hatred for many races and religions, including Sikhi. Here are some URL's that may help: http://www.sikhnet.com/sikhnet/discussion....8C?OpenDocument http://www.sikhnet.com/sikhnet/discussion....38?OpenDocument http://www.sikhnet.com/sikhnet/discussion....CF?OpenDocument :T:
  11. i know you guys just got through saying not to pass judgement, analyze him, etc.... but... just out of curiosity... does he trim his beard? :T:
  12. The goal, of course, is to constantly meditate on the Lord (Waheguru)'s name...Even when one is sleeping, eating, etc. they should remember God...Amritvela is a time in the morning as previously specified where one should specifically set aside time, sit down, and do path/prayers, etc...At this time, there are less distractions, and it is more conducive for spirituality...
  13. dumb question, but how were so many SGGS's transported to north america before this? most of the people i know have copies of SGGS, and i don't remember a flight like this happening... :T:
  14. Good point veer ji Which leads me to another question: Why are we so upset if we put bani on the floor? For example, if we put a gutka, pothee, etc. on our lap and it falls onto the floor, it is a big deal, as we are always told to never let it hit the ground. However, this must be because we value the physical essence of it, not the writing inside. After all, by putting it on the floor, the message is not hurt, the bani is left the same, it is just the "physical entity" that is disrespected. Why? By the way, to clarify, if you're going to respond saying that we must respect it, I understand we must respect the actual thoughts/messages of bani, but why the physical entity of a gutka? I hope that question made sense...
  15. Veer ji, if you wouldn't mind, could you please share some quotes from SGGS that say that we should keep hair? I would appreciate it very much because i have very little knowledge
