  1. With all this discussion about vegetarianism suddenly popping up over the boards I thought I'd post a presentation I made on powerpoint to email my friends. Enjoy! (This is Part 2 by the way - I'll be posting Part 1 as well. Oh, and please let me know if the songs still work - I really liked the songs.) EDIT: THE ATTACHMENT DIDN'T GET ATTACHED. ANYONE KNOW WHY?
  2. And don't forget world record holder Bhai Fauja Singh. I don't know if that's true, but can you explain to me why vegetarians are so much healthier than non-vegetarians?
  3. that's some great stuff, LLtK, thanks! well, I think it's time to get to work on the story. I'll send out an email to evryone who's offered to help soooon....
  4. It never ceases to amaze me how our Guruji's had such wisdom and such a way with words.
  5. Thanks for the input, Trust1. I agree with what your saying, I guess when you look at it that way maybe sticking to simple stories would be better idea than ryhming. Well, so we've got two things figured out so far --- that we're gonna start by writing a story on Guru Nanak Dev ji and that we won't rymhe. SOOO.... I'd like to ask the sangat a favour..... would you guys please provide some links, resources, etc where we can find some good information on Guru Nanak Dev ji? That would be a HUGE help!
  6. I guess I can see the point you are making there... but it's still interesting because you realise how God made everything so perfect. It just proves that certain actions are good for you and others are not. Like for example: our gurujis tell us not to eat meat, for one. The science behind that is that there are SO MANY negative consequences in your body that come from eating meat. Another example: Our gurujis gave us sports (gatka, for example, I forgot the other one) and scientifically they are beneficial to our health. I guess I'm just trying to make the point that when you come across articles like these you realise, not that Guru ji did extensive scientific research behind our religion to make everything perfect, but that by following Guru ji's teachings there are benefits even in this life. Just my 2 cents.
  7. Agnostic??? Soo... are you saying you believe in God or you don't? (lol, I had to look it up too... still don't know what it means!)
  8. Pretty interesting read, thank you for posting.
  9. I like it, I like it. What does everybody else think? And how'll we present the story (rhyming, humour etc)? Everybody's input please!!
  10. Question: What do you mean by ''boys club''? And why do you say it's a boys club? Because your girlfriend says it is? And why does SHE believe it's a boys club? I'd really like to know. If you're going to insult our religion then you should at least explain your thinking. Please anwer my questions and I'll try to respond as best I can with some actual facts. Thanks.
  11. That's a good point palamrinder brings up. Maybe you could get some kids together, dress 'em up in dastaars and things, and take some great seasonal photos to put in the calendar. Like for example, maybe you could take a picture of some kids playing in a pile of leaves for October, or take a picture of the kids playing outside on a good sunny day for September or something.
  12. No, I won't. You should be accepted on WHO you are and not WHAT you are. 131683[/snapback] I understand that. I just think that it'll be hard for the parents to understand it. Well, maybe becoming a Sikh is jumping a bit too far too quickly, especially if you already belong to a certain faith. But it would still be good for you to get to know more about your girlfriend's culture and background, both for your chances with her parents and for your relationship.
  13. I'm proud of you for being so strong, bhenji. All I can say is keep your faith, keep doing ardaas, and guruji will come through for you, I guarantee it.
  14. No, our religion isn't a boys club. If men are ever dominent in Sikh families it's only because of the culture. Sikhi promotes equality between men and women. If her family is more of the indian-ish type of family then your being white will be a problem. I know that's not fair, but usually that's just how it is. BUT if her familly is a familly with good Sikh principles then hopefully your race won't be a problem, because in Sikhi one's race is not important. If you really want to marry this girl then the best chance you have with her parents is to become Sikh. Maybe your not ready for that - but if you are willing to do this I'm sure the sangat would be more than willing to h elp you out. I can provide you with some weblinks that provide information. You can also buy yourslef a gutka and start reading the translations. Sikhi is such a simple, logical, beautiful religion, and if you dedicated yourself to this faith you would not regret it. However, if you decide not to become Sikh for whatever reason, I think it's in everyone's best interest if you start thinking about the consequences of marrying this girl. I know you believe that parents should not come in the way of 'true love' or whatever you wanna call it, but in indian famillies parents have a HUGE role of deciding who the children marry. It's just the way it is, and try to remember that the parents do it out of love. If you decide to marry her and the parents are not okay with it, it will cause alot of problems. Try to let her parents get to know you. They need to be able trust you and believe your a good person for your daughter. If they aren't okay with it, maybe friendship is your only option. And if you love her too much than Sikhi is your other option. Well, there's my advice, but whatever you decide is up to you. Good luck!
  15. So maybe our first book could be about Guru Nanak Dev ji?
  16. Hey, my hair falls out alot too.... and the sad thing is that I'm a girl!
  17. Found this from sikhiwiki.com: Here's the english translation: http://www.sikhs.org/transl6.htm
  18. I believe it is the prayer we are supposed to do every night before we go to sleep. Here's the english translation: http://www.sikhs.org/transl6.htm
  19. Have you tried doing keertan sohila before bedtime yet? Try it, everything else has failed, this could work for you! Here, I've found those music links for you: http://www.spiritvoyage.com/shopping/resul...ubCat&SubID=122 http://www.sikhnet.com/s/musicclub
  20. 10 Ways 4 the Restless 2 Fall Asleep (some of these are things that work for me... others are things I just made up :umm: ) 1. Put the fan on. Actually, don't do that, it wastes energy, just open the window a bit and let the fresh, cool air from outside make your room nice and chilly. That way it's alot easier to snuggle into your big warm comforter and fall asleep. 2. Do Keertan Sohila and Ardaas before bed. It helps clear the mind of useless thoughts, and it calms you down. 3. Put on some music during bedtime! Sikhnet.com's music club has some AMAZING cd's that are really peaceful and beautiful, you should definitely(sp?) check them out. I'll try to find the link for you. 4. Sit in bed and read a book for a while, and when your eyes start to droop just turn off the lamp and go to sleep. Worked for me. 5. Ummm..... running out of ideas.... how about you go for a jog, tire yourself out or something before bed?? I dunno, could work. 6. Get a teddy bear. Honestly, it helps. 7. um, um, um, um, COUNT SHEEP!! (I know, I know, someone already suggested that). OR you could put up some glow in the dark stars on your ceiling and count those. 8. CHANGE YOUR BEDTIME. Yes, that would probably help. You could go to sleep later when you'll be more tired, or you could wake up earlier so you'll be tired when bedtime does come! Plus waking up early will give you time for that Nitnem! 9. Do something calm before you are about to go to sleep. Clear your thoughts. 10. I'm sorry, I know I said 10 ways to fall asleep, but I'm all out of ideas! But good luck anyways, and I wish you a good nights sleep!
  21. Sorry for double-posting, just wanted to give this topic a little BUMP.... Btw, maybe someone could sticky this... that would be good...
  22. History and heritage - that was exactly what I was thinking. Does anyone have any ideas of a really great, inspirational, touching, exciting story from Sikh history that would be good for us to start with? I know we have plenty, but since we're all doing this together I'd like someone to suggest something first. Then we can start discussing the actuall story script.
