  1. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh Sangat Ji I'm sure many of you have heard about Sikh Missionary College based in Ludhiana and that they are running a two year course in gurmat for anyone wishing to learn about gursikhi. Its an eight part course (not available in english at present) - each set comes with a series of booklets, question & answer booklet plus your very own diary. Anybody wishing to enrol on the course can register with SMC by downloading the application form on their website. The entire course can be ordered for 400 rupees (for less than a fiver in GBP) and get it delievered to your door. Please follow the link below where you will find all the information. http://www.sikhmissionarycollege.org/enrolfrm.pdf Forr those of you living in the UK there is actually a class that takes place every Saturday from 8am to 10am at a gursikh family's house (Hadley Gardens, Norwood Green, Southall) - forgot to note door no! (will post that separately) where every week a chapter is studied. Its also a chance to meet other gursikhs, take part in discussions, ask any questions - and in essence to learn, which is one aspect of what it means to be a sikh. There's also a katha vaachak that comes almost every week too. I myself have only just started and am finding it very useful. Even if you can't come to the class every week you can take away the course booklets and you can do it at your own pace. Once completed successfully return the answer booklets to SMC who will award you with certificate. :a+ If anybody would like to know any further information about the class/course you can PM me. :TH: Bhul chuk maaf
  2. Gurfateh Penjhi How would you rate that dictionary overall and where can it be bought from?
  3. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh Can anyone recommend a good punjabi/gurmukhi dictionary that has meanings in both english and punjabi ofcourse. It would be very useful too look up the meanings of those unheard of punjabi words that I often come across when reading literature.

  6. Veer Ji WJKK, WJKF Reading your post reminds me exactly of the time when I first really starting loving Sikhi. At the time I was beginning a new job and i remember going around trying to tell everyone about it when they weren't even interested. They didn't lose anything but I sure did. I forgot my Guru and sangat and got engrossed with those people. I didn't understand that for those people who do not share the same vichaars there's no point. After taking Amrit I understood not to babble on about it becuase its priceless. So veer ji if these people don't care let it be - hopefully in their lifetime at some poiny they may discover Sikhi if God so wishes. Rather do ardaas for them "nanak naam chardi kala, tere bhane sarbat da bhalla." I hope these lines from Gurbani help also: kih kbIr Ab jwinAw ] kehi kubeer ab jaaniaa Says Kabeer, now I know Him; jb jwinAw qau mnu mwinAw ] jub jaaniaa tho mun maaniaa since I know Him, my mind is pleased and appeased. mn mwny logu n pqIjY ] mun maanae log n putheejai My mind is pleased and appeased, and yet, people do not believe it. n pqIjY qau ikAw kIjY ]3]7] n putheejai tho kiaa keejai They do not believe it, so what can I do? ||3||7|| Try to keep around the right sangat. Even if there is not a single gursikh at your school then try and make a regular routine of joining the sangat at the gurdwara that way you won't miss out. About your amirt vela - again doing ardaas before Guru ji and waheguru's kirpa you'll be fine.:TH: Bhul chuk maaf
  7. WJKK, WJKF Any form of superstitions or believing in bad luck is anti gurmat/sikhi. What ever happens to a person in their life is wirtten on the forehead according to their pre-ordained destiny.
  8. Absolutely amazing stuff penjhi!! Will def print this off for ref! :TH:
  9. nice one paji - love exploring new sikhi websites :TH: Gurufateh

  11. Even on a normal day at Havelock Road Gurdwara there is so much dis-respect going on - sangat speaking in the darbar even when you kindly tell them to be quiet, people walking around with their heads uncovered (mostly visitors or wedding people), people answering their mobile phones in the darbar Sorry to say but a lot of the time it feels more like a social community centre sometimes wherein a gurdwara is a place where you can attain peace from this burning world. Regarding the shooting yesterday the actors did not even acknowledge guru ji before filming alledgedly. Its so frustrating that are hands our tied because the commitee people allow this. Some might say oh well why bother with them and get yourself in a twist but at the end of the day if we don't bother to care for the respect of our guru then who will? Bhul chuk maaf
  12. WJKK, WJKF Veerji / Bhenji Looking at this theory from Gurbani perspective In Japuji Sahib from Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji it says: kvxu su vylw vKqu kvxu kvx iQiq kvxu vwru ] kavan s vaelaa vakhath kavan kavan thhith kavan vaar || What was that time, and what was that moment? 13. Thanks to all you guys for helping this moorakh out - much appreciated! Some really good advice. May waheguru bless you with Naam daan and chardi kala Gurfateh!
  14. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh Don't know if anybody else has had this but sometimes during Nitnem I've said odd random things Only today during Chapuai Sahib da paat I said something like "yeah this is how it is." Sometimes I start reading the wrong bani whilst doing another!. Especially the So Dar's in JapuJi and Rehraas Sahib - can get mixed up if your not paying attention. During Rehraas once when it came to Chaupai Sahib I began the Ardaas Worst still is sometimes going silent for a couple of minutes without realising and then trying to find out where I was. I think this mostly happens when i feel a bit tired or have had a very warm ishnaan! Anybody else have any experiences to share? Baljivan Singh
  15. WJKK, WJKF Sangat Ji (just wanted to share the following): The saying that "we are what we eat" is often the common reply you get from doctor's/fitness instructors etc.. If we look at it from the Gurbani perspective guru ji says: isrIrwgu mhlw 1 ] sireeraag mehalaa 1 || Siree Raag, First Mehl: siB rs imTy mMinAY suixAY swloxy ] sabh ras mit(h)ae ma(n)niai suniai saalonae || Believing, all tastes are sweet. Hearing, the salty flavors are tasted; Kt qursI muiK bolxw mwrx nwd kIey ] khatt thurasee mukh bolanaa maaran naadh keeeae || chanting with one's mouth, the spicy flavors are savored. All these spices have been made from the Sound-current of the Naad. CqIh AMimRq Bwau eyku jw kau ndir kryie ]1] shhatheeh a(n)mrith bhaao eaek jaa ko nadhar karaee ||1|| The thirty-six flavors of ambrosial nectar are in the Love of the One Lord; they are tasted only by one who is blessed by His Glance of Grace. ||1|| bwbw horu Kwxw KusI KuAwru ] baabaa hor khaanaa khusee khuaar || O Baba, the pleasures of other foods are false. ijqu KwDY qnu pIVIAY mn mih clih ivkwr ]1] rhwau ] jith khaadhhai than peerreeai man mehi chalehi vikaar ||1|| rehaao || Eating them, the body is ruined, and wickedness and corruption enter into the mind. ||1||Pause|| The last two lines here are so very true. Obviously guru sahib says that to keep this body going me must eat and fasting is a big no no but its different when the eating gets too much and out of control. From personal experience when I over eat its exactly the last line that happens. Few weeks ago on a Sunday mum made parothe (the big double aloo ones - mmm very tasty ). I was full with one but my mann got greeedy and had another - what happens? I went to the gurdwara afterwards and I felt anger boiling inside me for no reason. All day I didn't want to touch any other food and felt angry all and couldn't concentrate on my bani. I start to feel greedy in other areas when I have had far too many cookies. So gurbani is eaxtly true - eat less and you will remain focused. And the more you recite bani or do simran naturally you begin to feel less hungry as you taste the sweetness of bani. Also something I've noticed is that mostly the five vices come about after goorayan da food and rich indian foods. Plain daal and roti is always the best. Well thats my experience anyway. But who can stop mum's filling up your plate even when you make it clear you don't want much and they think you don't eat anything. Bhul chuk maaf

  17. WJKK, WJKF Sangat Ji Just wanted to share a few experiences with you. Sometimes after Nitnem I decide to go to sleep for just an hour or two so that I don't feel tired throughout the day cause the night before I get normally around I'd say between 4-5 hours. Otherwise what happens is I can get easily irritable if I've not had my full sleep which can lead to anger. But its odd that when I get back to bed after reciting nitnem suddenly these kaam thoughts just enter my mind and that leads to a similar dream. I've noticed this regular pattern. I also get odd silly/random dreams at this time. Throughout the day any of these thoughts, I try and control but at that time I can't even control them. Sometimes I don't go back to bed and go to the gurdwara and then come back and have a nap. But even then I get these kaam thoughts. I'm so confused am I sleeping too much or too less and why is this kaam so strong after nitnem? I try and find a balance as Gurbani says sleeping more than as needed leads to the five vices running aroung in the mind. Has anybody else had any similar experiences? please help Baljivan Singh
  18. Dear Penjhi I can completely relate to you and it sounds very like me. As a singh I find it equally hard to make friends. From experiences I've had nobody wants to be my friend. After taking Amrit I really thought that we would all be a big khalsa family. How wrong was I. For the first few months I would say fateh to everyone and really try my best but all I got was blanks and stares or what happened was people became friends for a while and then began to use me which made me upset. Even when I went to camp in the summer I felt so alone as everyone had their groups. I really began to think there was something wrong with me. Now I've realised its not the case. Those who don't say fateh back its a shortcoming in them. I've stopped putting my faith in others now. There is only one true eternal friend that I have. No matter how many times I say fateh or see him, he never blanks me and always welcomes me with open arms - and thats guru ji. And I thank waheguru for giving me a great sister who is my best friend and sangat.

  21. You're not alone penjhi, i'm far worse - i get nervous in almost every situation. The way I try to control it is by trying not to think about it until the actual time arrives. Becuase its normally the thinking before hand which gets me nervous. Do an ardaas on the day before or on the day for guru to give his blessings and I'm sure you'll be fine. :TH: guru fateh
  22. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh Nothing wrong with movement if it helps them to connect during simran - as long as they are being truthful and not showing falsehood. it doesn't take very long for others to realise if its just for show. Bhul chuk maaf
