  2. Hoshiarpur, August 4 The Dal Khalsa hits out at Punjab chief minister and his son for playing into the hands of those who have scant respect for Guru Granth Sahib. Endorsing the stand of the DSGMC president P S Sarna for providing all possible legal assistance to the suspects in the case pertaining to the attack on leaders of the Dera Sachkhand Ballan sect in Vienna, the president of the Sikh radical group H S Dhami said as a Sikh, he (Sarna) or for that matter any devout Sikh has a full right to defend and stand by those who volunteer to make supreme sacrifices for defending the tenets and ideals of Sikhism. He detested the media reports that Ravidassias had drifted away from Sikhism. "It’s the management and followers of Dera Ballan sect alone that subscribe to the idea of removing the saroops of Guru Granth Sahib from their religious places,” he pointed out. To drive his point home, he said there were many Ravidassias in their organization that revered Granth Sahib as their ‘Guru’ and fully adhere to the teachings and philosophy of Ten Gurus. With the help of state's machinery, the forces of Brahmanism combine with the followers of Dera Ballan were trying to pit the Sikhs against the followers of Bhagat Ravidassji to weaken the strength of Sikhism. Taking a dig at Akal Takht jathedar and SGPC president for siding with those who have shown disrespect to Guru Granth Sahib (Read Dera Ballan), he said both of them should seek pardon from the Guru Panth by offering Ardas at Akal Takht voluntarily. He alleged that both had failed in discharging their rightful duty to protect the tenets and principles of Sikhism. Bowing before the dictates of their political masters, he said, both had lowered the prestige of the institutions they have been serving.

  8. Came across the above then this We all know the how Bollywood shows Sikhs as jokers, clowns, and will show them as terrorists in the forthcomming movie about KP Gill, but I think we seriously need to readdress ourselves as well - we cannot expect Actors to present themselves as Amritdharis in films, the fact a Sikh is a 'hero' in them film checking a girl and so on we can't expect the 'Sikh' to be full on rehit maryada amritdhari Singh, rather a reflection of what your typical Chandigarh type Singh is - that is what we should expect. We don't want a situation where have a full Singh all religious checking a kuri Seeing comments on Youtube questions have arisen from people saying oh why don't Sikhs complain to those within the Community who have short beards and so on,so my point really is - we should not want to have a proper 'Singh' - dancing with Girls and at the same time claiming to be 'religious' in a film - either that or they should stop using Sikh Characters
  9. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/photography/5960918/First-shots-of-combat-photography-in-new-exhibition-of-Crimean-War.html The pictures are taken from the Crimean War (1848-1856) and the Second Sikh War (1848) by four pioneers of photography, including Roger Fenton. He was sent to the Crimea by Prince Albert in an attempt to alter public opposition to the war and was told before he departed for the frontline: "No dead bodies." His pictures were taken on glass plates and processed and printed in a converted wine merchant's horse-drawn wagon. One picture of troops posing shows a group of British and French soldiers enjoying a drink and a smoke in an image called "L'Entente Cordiale". He was unable to photograph the infamous Charge of the Light Brigade, but documented the cannonball-strewn aftermath of the Valley of Death in 1855. The work of James Robertson and Felice Beato is also going on show from the Crimean War. Fought between the Russian Empire and an alliance of troops from Britain, France and the Ottoman Empire, it is considered the first "modern" conflict in terms of tactics, weaponry, communications and propaganda. The earliest images on display are taken by Josh McCosh in 1848 during the war between the Sikh Empire and the British Empire in the Punjab. The National Army Museum will be showcasing the work in the exhibition First Shots: Early War Photography 1848–1860 at the White Space Gallery in Chelsea, west London, next month A spokesman said: "First Shots will document war photography in its infancy. Using some of the earliest photos in the museum's collection it will explore what drove its pioneers, the technical, social and environmental pressures which shaped their work and the impact which the images they produced had upon culture and society".
