Despite the teenager not coming from a Muslim background, professionals meant to protect her then allowed the parents of her 'husband' to foster her after she became pregnant, it revealed. One of her social workers allegedly even attended the wedding ceremony. The terrified girl – referred to as 'Anna' – was left in a state of 'domestic slavery', too scared to leave the controlling relationship for fear she would be the victim of an honour killing, she told the report's authors. Details emerged yesterday in an independent report into the treatment of five abuse victims in the West Yorkshire city over the past two decades, which found that 'children suffered abuse no child should have to experience'. Alarmingly, it concluded that some youngsters in Bradford 'remain unprotected' from sex exploitation. +2 Social workers in Bradford turned a blind eye when a 15-year-old grooming victim took part in an Islamic marriage to one of her abusers, the damning report revealed yesterday (stock image) The report – described by the body which commissioned it as making 'difficult and, at times, distressing reading' – began two years ago after nine men of Pakistani heritage were jailed for more than 57 years over the sexual exploitation of girls who had been in Bradford Council's care. Anna was placed in residential care as a teenager in 2002 but went missing more than 70 times, according to the report. She disclosed details of sexual abuse – including rapes – to a confidential support service for girls involved in prostitution, but nothing was passed on to police or social workers. SHARE THIS ARTICLE Share The following year, aged 15, she told the project worker she had converted to Islam and married her older Asian 'boyfriend' in a Sharia law ceremony. The report said it appeared there had been 'collusion' with this by her social worker 'who allegedly attended the ceremony and assessed that her marriage was likely to reduce the risks incurred when Anna was missing'. Staggeringly, despite becoming pregnant, after a review Anna was formally placed with her abuser's parents as a foster child, with the family even paid a fostering allowance. +2 The report began two years ago after nine men were jailed for more than 57 years over the sexual exploitation of girls who had been in Bradford Council's care. Pictured: Basharat Khaliq, Saeed Akhtar, Naveed Akhtar, Parvaze Ahmed, Zeeshan Ali, Fahim Iqbal, Izar Hussain, Mohammed Usman and Kieran Harris who were all jailed at Bradford Crown Court in 2019 Anna told the report's author: 'At 14 years old I was engaged to be married, taking on the role of an Islamic wife fulfilling the needs of my husband and the extended family somewhat like a maid. 'We had no similarities in race, religion or culture and I continued to be subject to domestic violence and was subject to a coercive, controlling sexual relationship with a known perpetrator. I was frightened to leave, in fear of an honour-based killing.' The report concluded: 'It is hard to understand how this decision can have been made and it resulted in Anna being entirely reliant on her abuser and his family.' Instead of protecting her from harm, the placement left her 'at greater risk and made her entirely dependent on them', it added. While there, she was subjected to 'domestic slavery' and 'sexually abused and exploited by dozens of adult males', it went on. The Bradford Partnership – which includes Bradford Council children's services and Bradford Police – has since apologised to young abuse victims who had been failed. It said a large number of defendants have been found guilty and given substantial prison sentences. The joint statement said: 'We believe that practice across all agencies is improving... but there is much more to do.'

  6. New community centre Sikh free school plan is put on hold for a year Updated 4:02pm Monday 11th August 2014 in News By Kathie Griffiths, T&A Reporter PLANS to open a new free school on the site of a former Bradford community centre have been put on hold. Khalsa Engineering Academy was due to open its doors to pupils this September but now it will be September next year, the Telegraph & Argus has been told. Sikh-faith based Khalsa Education Trust had already got the approval from the Department for Education to open the new academy as a Free School and had been on the verge of signing the Government's final funding agreement to open at the start of the new school year. But the plan for the new academy to take over the site once occupied by Fagley Youth and Community Centre has been temporarily postponed - though the reason for the delay has not yet been made public. No-one was available to comment from Khalsa Education Trust but a spokesman from Place - a support services group working with the Trust to achieve educational excellence, said he understood nothing was happening now on the site because the school would not be opening instead until September 2015. The site has been at the centre of a row between the youth and community centre's committee and its landlord Newlands Community Association who took legal action and changed the locks. Newlands had previously tried to get the committee to voluntarily surrender its lease before it officially ran out next March, but the committee had wanted to stay where it was, despite Newlands offering a new base at St John's Church half-a-mile away. The centre, which has now been loaned a three-bedroom Incommunities house to operate from, is still trying to prove the building was fundraised for by the local community and belongs to it and not Newlands - however, Iwan Williams, who heads the trading arm of Newlands, is insistent it owns the building and has the right to sell it. Even Bradford Council has got involved organising an emergency meeting to try to broker a deal over the use of the old centre, but it ended in deadlock despite trying to persuade Newlands bosses to start a dialogue with centre staff and users, and to negotiate an interim agreement for the use of the centre. At a recent Fagley Neighbourhood meeting Bradford East MP David Ward has also questioned the Fagley site being used for a Sikh school because limitations on its reasons for sale state it has to be for community use. Ward councillor Ann Wallace (Lib Dem) said: "News of the school not opening is new to us but it means the building will stay empty when we could have still been in it, keeping it full and benefitting the local community." A comment from Newlands Community Association was not available. Source - http://www.thetelegraphandargus.co.uk/news/11400466.New_community_centre_Sikh_free_school_plan_is_put_on_hold_for_a_year/
  7. Police confirm body is of missing Bradford mum Seemberjeet Kaur 6:00am Saturday 7th December 2013 in News By Hannah Postles, T&A Reporter Seemberjeet Kaur Police last night confirmed the body of a woman pulled from the River Aire near Leeds is that of missing Bradford mum Seemberjeet Kaur. A member of the public reported a body in the water near Leeds station at about 1.35pm on Thursday – a little more than six weeks after the 35-year-old disappeared from her home in East Bowling. A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said a post-mortem examination was carried out yesterday and the body had been formally identified as Mrs Kaur. Her death was not being treated as suspicious and her next of kin had been informed, he added. The married mum sparked a massive police search when she failed to collect her daughter, who was three but has since turned four, from nursery on Wednesday, October 23. There had been no positive sightings of Mrs Kaur since about 1pm that day, when she was captured on CCTV on the Leeds-Liverpool canal towpath near Roberts Park, Saltaire. Mrs Kaur, who had been taking medication for depression, had taken a taxi to Salts Mill from her home at about 10am. Officers said they were particularly concerned for her welfare because she was suffering from anxiety and may wrongfully have had concerns about her health. Police underwater teams had been carrying out searches along the canal and the River Aire from Saltaire towards Leeds, as well as scouring the park, woods, gardens and outhouses. Detectives also carried out sonar searches concentrating on a small stretch of the River Aire which flows through Roberts Park. Two weeks after she went missing, officers carried out an ‘information seek’ operation in the park, where residents were shown a photograph of Mrs Kaur to jog their memories and asked to fill out questionnaires to establish whether they might have seen her. Her family had spoken of their hope she was still alive, saying her disappearance was out-of-character. The Coroner has been informed and an inquest will be held in Mrs Kaur’s death. http://www.thetelegraphandargus.co.uk/news/10862400.Police_confirm_body_is_of_missing_Bradford_mum_Seemberjeet_Kaur/
