Banda Singh Bahadur

Banda Singh Bahadur is known for his great martyrdom but what about the event that lead to the martyrdom? Banda Singh Bahadur Ji was acting on the orders of Guru Gobind Singh Ji to march to Punjab. The march for Punjab was started after a meeting with Guru Ji on October 4th.  On that day what did Guru Ji advise him, blessed him with and who was sent to act as counsel for him?

Banda Singh Bahadur marched to Punjab with specific advice from Guru Gobind Singh Ji that would guide him to making Punjab a better place.  Guru Ji advised Banda Singh Bahadur to put a stop to cruelty of Punjab rulers, to punish the guilty and to uplift and strengthen the poor and downtrodden that couldn’t even imagine freedom. This was the first time a Sikh would partake in offensive warfare. Up until this time all fights that took place were in the defensive, Sikhs never started anything, they just finished them. But this time the injustices had reached the limit and Sikhs had to be offensive. Thousands of Sikhs, including the Sahibzadas, were martyred by cruel leaders. Banda Singh Bahadur etched the advice of Guru Ji in his heart and asked for blessings to march to Punjab.

Guru Gobind Singh Ji blessed Banda Singh Bahadur with a letter to Sikh Sangats stating Guru Jis order, five arrows, double edged sword and a big leather mounted drum. The letter would serve to bring more Sikhs to join forces with Banda Singh Bahadur. Also as a reminder to all Sikhs that their Guru has not forsaken them and has sent a brave Sikh to bring end to the cruelty being done to them. The arrows and sword were basic weapons Banda Singh Bahadur would need till he reached Punjab and mustered up an army and weapons it would take to defeat the tyrants. The drum was a reminder that Guru ka Sikh never attacked anyone in the back, always believes in a fair fight. Guru Ji’s blessings contained everything Banda Singh Bahadur would need to begin his march.

Banda Singh Bahadur was never without blessings of Guru Ji because Guru Ji sent Panj Pyare (known to be the image of Guru Ji) to advise Banda Singh Bahadur. The Panj Pyare consisted of Bhai Daya Singh Ji, Bhai Binod Singh Ji, Bhai Kahan Singh Ji, Bhai Bijay Singh Ji and Bhai Ran Singh Ji. The Panj Pyare were there to advise Banda Singh Bahadur whenever he was at a loss. Just like today whenever a Sikh is confused or needs advise, they are supposed to talk to the Panj Pyare. With Guru Gobind Singh Ji at Banda Singh Bahadurs side in the image of Panj Pyare, Banda Singh Bahadur was ready to head for Punjab.
