Confused To Do Paat?

Well i've got this urge of doing paat! - i wanna do it and feel like doing it to refresh the mind and get closer to God.
I eat meat/fish (whenever), me and my family buy meat/fish and we have acohol in the house.

I wanna try and set days of consuming meat/fish, i do wanna (in time) stop eating meat..fish maybe.
Anywho, we have Gutkeh in our house in the top room, we cleaned our house and moved things.. and we had acohol in that room and we moved it in my room ( we had a wedding! ) And in the back of my mind it sprung to me that when i do Kirtan Sohila ( you do it just before u go sleep, in bed ) that i have acohol in my room.

I dont want this to set me back, as i wanted to do paat ages before but issues and feelings have took over the situation :/ dissapointed to say!

I wanna try and wake up before i need to leave the house and do Japji Sahib..do it before breakfast.
Question's
- Say if its too cold and i cant be asked to have a shower and choose to do paat is that forbidden?
- Is it ok to do it a 7.00am? 7.30am?
- Am i suppose to do Ardass after?

When i comeback i wanna do Rehrass, my mum listens to it on telly, but i wanna try and read it.
Question's
- what time are you suppose to do it?
- what if i eat fish/meat outside, can i still do it?
-Am i suppose to do Ardass after?

^.^ Japji Sahib and Rehrass i would be doing in the top room..which leave's Kirtan Sohila?? btw we keep shoes in the top room we dont want, so we can give them to charity, is that a sin? ( as we keep the Gutkeh there )

btw does anyone know a really good websites that do Kirtan Sohila, Mool Mantar, Chaupi Sahib, Ardass translations on posters?
Also what is the difference between Mool Mantar, Chaupi Sahib and Ardass

and when is the best time to do Chaupi Sahib and Mool Mantar??

Thankyou, please help me expand my knowledge in paat.

Its commendable that you want to start reading our SatGuroo Jee's Banee.

However, first things is first, you'll need to work on stopping all meat/fish/eggs, alcohol and tobacco consumption as this is a massive "reecaavat" - roadblock in your spiritual progression.

Its highly advisable that you have a shower everyday in the morning before reciting GurBanee from a Gutka sahib. Cleanliness is very important on this path and it seems from your post that its only laziness thats stopping you from having a shower in the morning and not any other responsibility/cause.

Try doing a little Simran before reading GurBanee as it should help.

most of your questions dont have a straight yes or no answer, it depends on how far you want to go personally... After you take amrit the answers to these questions will become straightforward yes and no. The panj piare will explain how to do everything.

1.) Its not forbidden- at minimum just wash your hands feet and face before you start.

Once you take amrit you will have to shower every morning.

2.) Any time is ok for any paath when you start off... doing it regularly is the main thing.

Once you take amrit you get up before the sun rises, do simran for a few hours and then around 5/6 ish start nitnem.

3.) Doing ardaas afterwards would be great but if it means you are not going to do jap ji sahib because you cba with ardaas, still do jap ji sahib.

Once you take amrit you should do ardaas after nitnem.

4.) Rehraas is done in the evening around dusk.

5.) Im not sure about this one. At least have a shower if you have eaten meat before toutching gutka sahib. I personally think it is wrong to have alcohol and meat in the same house as gutka sahib but i dont want to discourage you from doing paath, so slowly try to cut these things out. At least have no meat/ alcohol on the same floor. Another solution is maybe just use your smartphone as a gutka... so there is no sin of having meat and alcohol in same house as gutka?? i dont know.

.

Yes please take away the shoes from the gutka room.

When you do paath from a gutka, if people walk on the floor with outside shoes on, then you should put a clean sheet on the floor before doing paath on the floor.

hope this helps

With regards to ardaas I'm sure it's okay just to do short ardaas. Just a personal benti ie asking forgiveness for mistakes whilst reading bai

Also if you've consumed meat etc since your last shower you should probably shower again, but that may just be my opinion

Also meat/alcohol in the same house is something you can't do anything about but in the same room as the gutke is not good, and shoes too, so maybe find a long-term solution

Also, with simran I never realised the importance, but sitting there and saying Vaheguru and trying to concentrate is important and you should definitely try that to (a lot of the time we think it's the same as saying "oh rabba" when in pain or something - or this may just be the people I've come across - but it's not)

Good luck on what could prove to be a truly beautiful turn in your life

Yes it is okay, you can do that. just after you do your hair you can cover you head with a small scarf or chunni, then go on to further getting ready etc. i used to do this since i when i was in school, it is perfectly fine, as long as your motive is to remember god and do your nitnem and disrespect in any way.

Japji Sahib can be done anytime within 24 hours, but ideal time is before breakfast.  Ardaas after is optional but if you can make it necessary will be ideal. When it comes to paat more the merrier.

Meat / alc should be in separate rooms to Gutke Sahibs. It is possible no matter how small the house. WAIT! Isn't all food in the kitchen??

You can still do paat after meat n alc. Nothing wrong there... just wash yer hands! (Obviously).

You wouldn't have been allowed to write that on this forum back when OP posted this 😆 in 2013. These groups confused me as well, and the meat thing was really confusing me about when to do my evening paat, just so much of this stuff came from elders' baggage in the pind.

Not going to write anything else because the original post is so old.

    • Ik i'm a few (13) years late but basically: Get a single Mal-mal dastar (around 3-5 metres) and starch it. You just whisk 2 ladles of starch (Kershaw's, cornstarch or maida) with around 5 cups of water until it's completely smooth and mix it on low heat flame for around 20 mins until it goes clear and think like water. When this cools off, take a clean but damp turban and soak it into the starch and make sure you coat the whole dastar evenly You leave it out to hang dry in the sun/air. Once dry u can store it in a cool, dry place until you wanna tie it (for about 4 months) Take the dastar, sprinkle some water all throughout the turban to make it slightly wet and just soft enough to tie. Then you and another person hold the dastar at each end to make a stretched rectangle (two people holding one corner in each of their hands). Fold it in half width-wise 3 times. Tie the turban like this quite loosely. The starch will make it tighter as it dries BUT TIE IT STAIGHT ONTO YOUR HEAD. NO MINi-TURBAN BENEATH IT. JUST TIE YOUR FLATTENED JOORA ON TOP OF YOUR HEAD AND THE DASTAR DIRECTLY ON TOP Secure it with pins and wear it on your head until it has dried from the water you sprinkled before the pooni. After it has completely dried (give it around 3-4 hours just to make sure) you take it off your head DO NOT UNWRAP IT TAKE IT OFF IN IT'S SHAPE and the next time you need to wear you can just place it on your head over your flattened joora instead of tying this. You can do this for around 5 months after you first tied it until you have to ever tie it again.
    • I tie a Punjabi style dastar with starch. Why do people hate this so much? Once when I was tying my dastar my neck seized up and the apna doctor said staying in that position daily for more than 5 mins is dangerous. He recommended a starched pagg like his dad. And I respect my pagg more than my life. I put it on the top shelf of my cupboard whenever it isn't on my head, recite Waheguruji da naam whenever I am tying my joora, fifty and when i place the Dastar on my head and I mata thek and kiss  it before I do. And when I do tie it (every 4 months when the starch starts to weaken) I make sure that I pooni and tie it with much love and whilst reciting paath. I get that if someone treats their turban like a hat (eg: throwing it on the floor, cramping it or just disrespecting it) then this is unacceptable but just cos one puts their pagg on their head rather than tying it each time doesn't mean they treat it as such. (and let's be honest, starched or not we've all put our dad's pagg on our head like a hat when we were kids as a joke and meant no disrespect. Intention is everything). Ik Singhs who get angry tying their pagg and start doing maa/phen di gaaliyan, and when they take it off they just throw to the side and wait to tie it again next time. (Also, I'm from a Jat Sikh family so pls don't try to make this about "starched paggs are tarkhan/caste based" or anything stupid like that). PS: I do remember that stupidness in the 90s/early 2000s UK when Sikh men used to have a tiny starched paggs and were completely clean shaven or had a little goatee like Herbie Sahara/ Vijay from achanak. Now THAT was stupid and deserves all the hate but I just mean the concept of a starched dastar whether it's Punjabi Style, Kenyan style or whatever
    • Anyone know how to tie this turban? My Nani's dad tied it, it was starched but i can't work out whether the pooni was kenyan orpunjabi (like folded or an actual pooni). This was very common before partition, and uses a single dastar (not double stitched). Is it js Kenyan pagg with a higher larr?
    • It doesn't matter. What the nihangs did 100 years ago has no relevance today. Because people fight differently now. As a karate black belt, 90% of what we learn is useless, cos it revolves around how people fought 100 years ago. Today, most teenage boys likely to cause fights (at least in the uk) do boxing. But when boxing was really popular, people used to throw punches, hence why the "man to man fist fight" image was there. But now that UFC is popular, people do all sorts like grappling, knees and all (even with no training).  And also, I highly doubt anyone ever attacked a nihang Singh unarmed back then, just by seeing their saroop with shastaraan. What they did do, however, was Loh Mushti but that was more of a sport than a combat system. They definitely would have trained in basic fighting like wrestling and strikes but not a system. Because any good fighter knows that trying to find a "code" to fight by is stupid. But in terms of unarmed fighting, it was rare and probably revolved around disarming an armed attacker (do NOT even attemp to learn that, you will get killed and there's no point even trying to learn).   If you're interested for historical/ preservation purposed then great, but if you want to learn it for self defense or fighting tactics then pls don't, because what worked then won't work now and Nihangs were probably quite limited in hand to hand combat training cos they're armed to the teeth, deterring any unarmed attacker and killing one if they tried to fight
