Sikhs settled in various parts of the country other than Punjab shared their grievances with members of the National Commission for Minorities in the union Capital on Friday. They not only highlighted problems faced by them in the field of education and employment, but also other socio-economic issues that affect their normal day-to-day life. The meeting was called at the initiative of former MP HS Hanspal, a member of the commission, and saw representatives of South Indian, Bengali and Bihari Sikhs, besides those of sikligars, lubhanas, vanjaras and other communities. Chairman, Minorities Commission, Mohammad Shafi Quereshi and members Michael Pinto and Spalz Angmo a…

Many residents and priests at Sri Gani Khan-Nabi Khan Sahib Gurdwara today demanded the removal of a piggery from the area. The piggery has allegedly been creating panic among people due to swine flu. “Due to the recent Swine Flu cases, we demand the removal of the piggery from the area. It is a nuisance due to the terrible stench in the pig farm,” said Baba Jarnail Singh Karsewa Wale in the gurdwara. Despite writing numerous letters to a large number of senior officials, including SDM and MC president, no action has been initiated in this connection. “We may even help the owner of the pig farm in relocating, but it should immediately be shifted from the place,” said …

Set Yourself Free Set yourself free from anything that might hinder you in becoming the person you want to be. Free yourself from the uncertainties about your abilities or the worth of your dreams, from the fears that you may not be able to achieve them or that they won't be what you wanted. Set yourself free from the past. The good things from yesterday are still yours in memory; the things you want to forget you will, for tomorrow is only a sunrise away. Free yourself from regret or guilt, and promise to live this day as fully as you can. Set yourself free from the expectations of others, and never feel guilty or embarrassed if you do not live up to their st…

Akal Takht has again banned the participation of Giani Iqbal Singh, Patna Sahib Jathedar, in the meetings of the Sikh clergy due to his differences with Giani Balwant Singh Nandgarh, Damdama Sahib Jathedar, for challenging the supremacy of Akal Takht. Jathedar Iqbal Singh has been claiming that Takht Patna Sahib was the supreme temporal seat of the Sikhs. Unhappy with the decision of Akal Takht for not inviting him to tomorrow’s meeting, Jathedar Iqbal Singh threatened to start pronouncing parallel hukamnamas (edicts) from Patna Sahib on important Panthic issues.. However, Jathedar Nandgarh reiterated to stick to his stand of not participating in any meeting to which …

Nihang organisations have resented reducing the area of the historic Charan Ganga Stadium, where nihangs play mohalla during hola mohalla celebrations. The Circular-shaped Charan Ganga stadium has been reduced to mere triangular shape due to ongoing channelisation work of the Charan Ganga rivulet. Tarna Dal chief Baba Gurdev Singh, Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib Jathedar Giani Tarlochan Singh and SGPC member Gurinder Singh Gogi, too, visited the stadium to see the damage done. Nihnag organisations said this stadium was the only place with adequate space to practice martial arts and now, it has been reduced to a mere lawn. Giani Tarlochan Singh said he would stake up the issue…

The Sikh high priests met at Akal Takht secretariat here today and announced that the Sikh shrine in the vicinity of the Rajasansi airport would not be shifted to another place as suggested by airport authorities. The meeting, presided over by Jathedar, Akal Takht, Giani Gurbachan Singh, said the gurdwara being a historic one, would remain at its original place. The Rajasansi international airport is perhaps the only airport in the world where one can cross the operational area, runway included, to pay obeisance at a Sikh shrine in its vicinity, posing a serious security threat. Earlier, keeping in view the security concerns, the Airports Authority of India (AII) had s…

The Beautiful Flower In The Broken Pot Our house was directly across the street from the clinic entrance of Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. We lived downstairs and rented the upstairs rooms to out patients at the clinic. One summer evening as I was fixing supper, there was a knock at the door. I opened it to see a truly awful looking man. "Why, he's hardly taller than my eight-year-old," I thought as I stared at the stooped, shriveled body. But the appalling thing was his face, lopsided from swelling, red and raw. Yet his voice was pleasant as he said, "Good evening. I've come to see if you've a room for just one night. I came for a treatment this morning from…

These days environmental talk is just a nice time pass thing. We fail to realize its importance. If we have beautiful gardens in Gurdwara Sahibs, the gurdwara sevadaars like kirtaniyaas, granthis, langar sevadaars will be made to work on these gardens, grow food etc. This will increase their self esteem and their spiritual jeevan will rise. The gurbani they read will get used for their spiritual upliftment instead of making up for eating from the golak.
