The Council of State's ruling reversed its own decision in December in favor of Shingara Mann Singh, a French citizen who refused to take off his turban for a license photo in 2004. The case gained attention amid tensions between France's religious minorities and the government over a law banning conspicuous religious signs in public schools, aimed at Islamic headscarves. For Sikhs, the turban is an article of faith. Singh took his case to the Council of State, which ruled in December that he could wear his turban because a ban on covering the head in official photos came from the Interior Ministry, not the Transport Ministry. The council said a Transport Ministry order concerning identity photos was not precise enough to apply to Singh's license. The following day, the Transport Ministry changed its order, specifically saying that the Interior Ministry ban was applicable on driver's licenses. The case went back to the Council of State, which ruled Monday that Singh must take his turban off for the photo. The council said the requirement did not trample on religious freedoms but was necessary for "the interests of public security and protection of order." Singh's lawyer, Patrice Spinosi, has said they could take the case to other tribunals, such as the European Court of Human Rights. The small, quiet Sikh community in France began making its voice heard after France banned religious signs in public schools in 2004, which forced Sikh students to remove turbans or be expelled.
  3. Ghosts and such they do exist, there is no question. Since these things bring evil with them they can not harm us if we read Gurbani and do Naam Japna. Otherwise if you don't these things then they can hurt you. But if you have Gurbani and Naam Simran inside of you, you got nothing to worry about. So I think many have the mindset that if they can't see something with their eyes it doesn't exist. This is a very naive notion because there a hidden world which we can not see, the Spirtual realm. If you are spirtually blessed then you can see that world as well. I remember my mother telling a story once. A Baba Jee came to visit us and we were having a kirtan at our house that day but the room in which were going have the kirtan was not setup yet. The Baba Ji went for a walk and as he was walking he began running at full speed all of a sudden. He was an old person, so seeing him run at full speed was something and as he got the Kirtan room, he told my mom to quickly put white sheets on the ground so that the sangat could sit, they were waiting for the kirtan. But no one was in the room. He said that there are many souls waiting for the kirtan to start so they should have a proper place to sit.... Bul Chuk Khema Karnee Ji..
  4. http://www.sikhsangat.org/publish/article_868.shtml Bhai Ram Singh ji passes away; Bhai Puran ji new head By SSNews Mar 2, 2006, 17:37 The head of Akhand Kirtani Jatha India, Jathedar Bhai Sahib Ram Singh Ji sadly passed away this morning at Amrit vela. Bhai Sahib Ji's funeral (saskar) took place in Amritsar. The sangat in association with the 11 member Prabandak committee of Akhand Kirtani Jatha India have announced Bhai Sahib Surat Singh ji, commonly known as Puran Ji (pictured) as the next Jathedar of AKJ. A special Panthic Smagam in memory of Bhai sahib will be held on the 9th March, starting with an Akhand Path with bhog on 11th march, followed by Akhand Kirtan. Bhai Ram Singh ji was a Gursikh of a very high spiritual jeevan, which anyone who did sangat of him soon realised. He was given the seva of Jathedar in 1978, and led it through very difficult times of Vaiskahi 1978, Operation Blue Star in 1984, Delhi riots and the decade of genocide after. He always helped any soul, that came to him for help. Many times this was his own personal risk, in his very old age. He helped Shaheed parivaars, often confronting police and politicians himself to free the wives and children of Shaheed Singhs. Jathedar Ram Singh ji also wrote books on Gurmat. He wrote about Rehat learned directly from Gurbani in one. He also wrote a Saroop of Sree Guru Granth Sahib Jee. Bhai Sahib Bhai Randheer Singh wrote in Gurmat Bibek that writing Gurbani is a great way to get Naam vibrations going in the entire body. Jathedar Bhai Ram Singh ji, knowing the need of the next generation for books in english, wrote "Dawn of the Divine Wisdom" in 1977. Akhand Kirtani Jatha UK pays homage and gives respect to Bhai sahib and to his family and prays to Waheguru that Bhai sahibs soul is given blessing by the Grace of Waheguru. Akhand Kirtani Jatha UK will dedicate the Rainsbhai Kirtan on Saturday 25th March in the memory of the late Jathedar Bhai Ram Singh ji, which will take place at Siri Guru Singh Sabha Gurdwara, Park Ave, Southall, UK.

  13. Yea, I've been in the same place. In my case there were no other desis even, it was just me against everyone. I've lived in rural areas where they don't have any other minorites. I've had it where when I went to the teacher and the teacher made fun of me. Talk with them, see if they listen. In some cases they don't want to listen, then you have to learn to ignore them. Be strong within, don't let it bother you. I grew up in Ohio and currently live in North Carolina, where some people are somewhat backwards. Some will listen, some won't. Chardee kala!!!

  18. Meateaters/drinkers who have a kirtan at their home and serve langar afterwards is wrong because they use the same utensils/pots that they make the meat in for the langar. The fact that it is made in their home is the problem. I don't see the difference between this and eating outside fast food. Calling it langar does change how it was made. It has happened to me where I go to kirtan to someone's place and then afterwards I can't get myself to eat the langar. The homeowner feels bad and asks why I won't eat their food. I am not saying that my rehat is perfect, it is from far it, but I just can't eat the langar. Galtee Maaf Karneea Jeeo
  19. I was curious for those in this forum that are Amritdharee. If someone who drinks alcohol and/or eats meat, that is that they make it in their home, makes langar, would you eat it? Just curious..
  20. Taksal Maryada is legitmate because Taksal was made by Guru Gobind Singh Ji himself with Baba Deep Singh Ji as the first Jathedaar. For me that is enough reason to accept that rehit over the SGPC. I personally find that those that have actually lived the lifestyle and have Kamaee, the Panth's Gems, GurSikhs are the ones to follow as apposed to book scholars. Scholars can analyze and argue points, which they are good at, but they don't live the lifestyle and have no Kamaee. They may have everything in the brain. but they have nothing in their hearts. The path to God is through the heart, not the brain. Bula Maaf Karneea Jeeo...
  21. It's actually interesting how the current Rehat Maryada was established. Alot of the controversial points are controversial because the wrong people established them. What I mean is that when the Rehat Maryada was being decided upon, there were two sides, the book scholars and the Saints. The Saints, who had actually lived the Sikhi lifestyle demanded that Keski, not eating meat, and so on be added to the Rehat Maryada, but the Scholars did not agree. This meeting was held a few times and each time they met fewer people showed up until only the Scholars were left and they did their own thing and made the rules and now they say read shorter paats, eat meat, and don't wear keski and so on. That is why AKJ and Taksal Maryadas are important because they are more what Purataan Singhs/Singhneea followed as compared the modern version of the SGPC maryada. If you want more details of what I am talking about watch this Maryada Video: http://gursikhijeevan.com/media/video/index.php
