guruji also speaks to us through gurbani, through his rehet, and through his khalsa panth. following the "hukam of your inner guru" to the exclusion of these sounds kind of like manmat.

if one is keeping rehet already, then maybe i can see where you're coming from. but if one is committing a bujjar kurehet, i don't think they should be wearing our Guru ji's kirpan. how do you feel about someone on a powerful mind-altering drug wandering around with Guru ji's kirpan? that's fine with you? how would you feel if you saw some incident on TV where they said a sikh used a kirpan for something wrong. and NO, i'm NOT SAYING the original poster will do something wrong. i'm saying, if we say that anyone can wear the kirpan, then these incidents will start to happen. an then where will we stand when we try to explain why we have to carry it at school or work or in a court room... just a thought. do with it what you will.

no. catholics (not all christians), think that the pope is like their "hotline to god". that what he says is god's word. he makes decisions for their whole religion. we have Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji for that... not a man. so for us God's word is unchanging forever. for catholics, "god's word" changes to reflect politics or the will of the rich.

if this is NOT your opinion, then why post it? obviously it's insulting to singhnia. what does it achieve? i'm sorry, but what on earth are you talking about? i've never met any sikh girl that converted to another religion. i have met several girls who converted TO sikhi... where do you get this "9 out of 10" number? looking around the gurdwara, i'd have to disagree with you, there are usually more women present. obviously someone who isn't ready to offer their head to guru will make many excuses for it. my advice: spend more time with sadh sangat and less time with kusangat. i agree with you, but this is more of a problem with the double standard set by the singhs (wanting waxed/trimmed wives while they whine that no one will marry a sikh with a turban - hypocrits!), rather than something women are doing wrong. i agree that we should worry more about becoming better sikhs first, but excluding women from amrit sanchar seva is a serious issue that is absolutely anti-gurmat. i can hold up more Singhnia than i can count as incredible sevadars, leaders, kirtanis, kathavachaks, gatka instructors, sisters, daughters, mothers, friends... there are two big differences between these women and the singhs who are held up as "inspirations" for youth (not speaking against any specific singh, just in general). first, punjabi culture tends to look to men for leadership, even overlooking women who are able to do the role. this is seen in some communities when looking for amrit sanchar sevadars. this is also evidenced by the fact that punjabi gurdwaras nearly always are completely run by men, have male granthis, have male committees, etc. while if you look at gurdwaras with a non-punjabi population (in many countries of the world), you'll see women are equal, or even more active in these roles than men. second, women are taught to be more "gupt" about their seva. they don't brag about their accomplishments as much. and so they don't get noticed for their accomplishments as much. and if they don't get noticed, then obviously they won't be big inspirations... unless you're LOOKING to be inspired. THEN you'll see them. myself excluded, i find most singhnia more humble and less likely to step forward, so obviously they won't be seen. (i, on the other hand, am loud and big headed. :D ) but think about it... behind every successful Singh, is a strong Singhni, supporting him and taking none of the credit. and probably a devout mother, who encouraged him on his path. read a bit about Bibi Amrarjit Kaur if you want to know how a true Singhni lives. she is the woman i look up to most in this world. ok, i'm off the soap box. for now.

I always tell her shaheed stories every night and so and developing her Sikhi now so all of this will be natural. Now she only ties when we go Gurdwara. when i started wearing dastaar, i only wore it to gurdwara too. then i wore it a couple times a week... then i started wearing it every time i left the house... then i started wearing a dastaar or at least a keski 24x7. :D but it all started with the trips to gurdwara. it sounds like she has a good role model to look up to!

I agree. If you contact them I am sure they will arrange for your transportation and help you find Sangat. Also, for those who have discourages you from taking amrit while on methadone, I would simply reply be stating methadone is being used for medicinal purposes, we have no right to issue a judgment on whether you can or cannot take amrit. However, I highly doubt many would refuse to give amrit to one taking oxycodone or morphine for medicinal purposes, even though they too can produce altered states of mind. Also, I do not personally see any issue with you wearing your panj kakkars in preparation. If you keep your kes than you can also wear a Kara. I hightly doubt those telling you not to wear a Kara will tell you to remove your kes as well. However, when it comes down to it the best advice anyone can give you is to consult the Panj Pyairay in your region, discuss with them these issues of wearing kakkars and taking amrit and follow accordingly. Do not be bound by the advice or word of anyone on this forum, instead please contact the Gurdwara Sahib in New Westminster, speak to the Panj Pyairay there and take their word, as the word of the Guru. i don't think anyone is saying he "can or cannot" take amrit, amrit isn't something we "take", it's something we are blessed with. i think as long as he is honest with panj piyare than it should be fine. but i think it's essential that he be honest with them about his situation. if there is a 3ho oriented sangat nearby (someone mentioned yoga something...), they might be especially good to talk to about preparing for amrit, as they have a lot more experience with your specific situation than most punjabi sikhs will. regarding kakkars... no one is saying don't wear a kadha... but a kirpan? there's a lot of responsibility that comes with the kirpan. i've never met anyone who advocates wearing the kirpan before amrit.

beautiful description. i think midnight-5 is a commonly accepted window for amrit vela. some people lean to the midnight side, others to the 5am side. technically i think it's the "hours before dawn", so it might change with the seasons or depending on who you are and where in the world you live. i wonder when they do amrit vela in alaska in summer when the sun never sets? :gg:

as long as it doesn't contain alcohol or animal products you should be fine. though it's best to make your own in a sarbloh deodorant stick mould. :D ummm, whats wrong with alcohol? the problem is with alcoholic beverages, not the chemical itself i think u need to do ur reasearch tellin me about alcohol how old are hmm?! how much of the world have YOU seen?! alcohol lai ke ai... hmph IT.
