from what i have been told, Sikhs cant be boxers because if the boxer got cuts to the face, they may require stitches,in order for the doctor to do the stitches, it means the hair needs to be shaved, i know quite a few sikhs who want a career in kickboxing and boxing,but cant because of the darhi. i have also heard that it is to do with the fact that the darhi covers the neck which makes it dangerous for them in case they get hit 2 the throat.

yeh somethin is rong wid me, i came on 2 this site 4 advice which most people gave, but then theirs people like you who rant and rave like ur so gr8, i started dis topic because i wanted help from sangat, so that i cud do somethin about it, ur tellin me 2 do somethin but i was unsure of wat to do, hence me starting dis topic, i didn start it 2 get talkd down 2 by u,

i dnt drink smoke or do drugs etc. i go to these places to enjoy my self, but also because a lot of sikh boys and girls say that they feel safer when we are there. i understand what everybody is saying, it is the same things that my amritdarhi friends have said to me, but i no that rite now i am feeling like this, so i have started doin paat n stuff, but it wnt last, i just go through this cycle of feeling bad, then doin paat n simran, n then carrying on my normal lifestyle, then i feel bad again. i have been told to do ardaas and get hukhamnama from guru ji, but i no that if i break the hukham from guru ji, it is a great paap. i also feel that i grew my hair for the wrong reason in the first place, i was not prepeared to give myself to the guru fully.

i used to be a mona, at the age of 15 i started keepin ma kesh, i am now 19. i was recently speaking to an amritdarhi person on msn, n this person made me realise that im not putting sikhi 1st, she made a comment like 'u chose 2 go 2 a party rather than jap naam'. this comment hit me very hard, n it made me think of hw bad i am, i've felt similar to this b4 but i always try changin, it only lasts about 3 days. i can never wake up in the morning to do paat, i dnt even try anymore, i've realised that i cant change the way i am yet, because i no i havent gt the willpower to do paat,n i will stil go to these parties, n i feel ashamed, walking in to these kind of places with a big pagh n darhi. i came 2 the conclusion that maybe i do not deserve to represent sikhs, especially as i go to places like these, so i thot of getting rid of ma kesh, so as not 2 disrespect it.

it was fixed 2 yrs ago wen i went, the 'singh'(trimmed) vs mona final the 'singh' was part of thier akhara. thats a load of rubbish. im not apart of any of the akhareh but i clearly watched that match. the mona dude should have disqualified a few round previous to that. there where cuts on peopls faes fter he had hit them. even in the final he clearly hit the guy in his face, but the 'trim singh' toldthe refrees to carry on with the match. if it was fixed, do u really think they would want a trim singh to win??? why not fix it for one of the amrit daris? please stop these stupid childish allegations and grow up! the only times he hit them in the face was when he aimed for their shoulders but they ducked down.i've trained with him for 3 yrs and he has never hit me in or any body in my akhara on the face. and i do no that u hav to be a saint b4 soldier, at my akhara we go to the lesson early in order to learn paat, and we do paat at the end,, we go to programmes together, so i have learnt a lot of sikhi thru gatka, and im very greatful for that

they will be available to speak 2 the sangat, are they goin to question every1 in front of guru ji??? how can u be 100% sure that these people have not given in to these sins?? it appears to me that the organisers have made this decison without thinkin it through.

and how exactly will u no if they are commiting these sins or not, how do u no that every single person that u accept does paat, doesn eat meat, doesnt drink etc. the only basis u have for judging someone is if they have kesh. because its not like ur going to do a background chek on every single person to ensure they dnt drink,eat,meat,smoke etc.

i think its becuz they scared a mona might win lol looks bad on singhs they ment to be great at gatka but loose to a mona lol i had a feeling this was the case, 2 yrs ago, a mona from my akhara got 2 the final, and he clearly won it, and every1 cud c that he won it, bt the judges kept 'missin' his strikes, and in the end the 'singh' with the trimmed darhi 'won', at the end of it, everybody came over 2 the mona and said to him, we knew u won. o well.

i no plenty of 'singhs' with huge dumalla's, and long beards, they drink,smoke,eat meat, i also know monay who wake up at amrit vela every morning to do paat,, they dnt drink 2 judge sum1 on their appearance like that is very short sighted, wat if sum1 that normally trims their darhi,grows it especially for this tournament, and then shaves it d nex day?? and so wat if a mona wins it,it jus shows that he/she is more committed to their trainin. and i no sikhi is learnt thru sadh sangat, but like i sed, gatka mite b a way for that person to get into sikhi, by meeting fellow singhs n singhni's.

Entry Rules To enter you must be trained in the Gatka art and be following the basic tenents of the Sikh faith i.e. Keshadhari (progressing towards taking Khalsa baptism) if not already an Amritdhari Sikh. isnt this a bit unfair their judging a book by its cover by only allowing people with dastaars, is like saying that u can only be religous if u gt a dastaar,the person with the dastaar could luk like a sikh bt not behave like a sikh (not doin paat,simran etc) whereas the mona could be doin paat,simran,sewa and everything bt is stil nt ready to grow their kesh. i personally think it is very wrong of the organisers to discriminate in this way. and i think it will discourage monay from going to sikh events because they mite feel inadeqaute, they mite luk at gatka as a way to meet sikh sangat, and get in to sikhi, (although, u shud becum a saint b4 soldier) gatka is a way 4 ppl to express their sikhi,and get in to sikhi. and when people are discriminating against them because they have gt cut hair will discourage them from sikhi more den anything.

but u have neva been to either persons lesson, so how can u make that judgement ??? but neway, the question was if it can be used in a real fight, and from my experience, it can.

ur paticular group that you train with focuses on demo's, our lot do a demo every 3 months or, not even that. i've told u in the past wher to go if u wana learn more hand 2 hand combat.

i learn gatka, and i have used it in a real fite, it is practical in modern days if u no wat to do. u dnt have to carry a kirpan around to implement gatka, u can use anythin that comes to hand like a belt, i disagree with people saying that it is only for display purposes,our akhara does not train for demonstrations,we focus our training on our training, if we are invited to do one we will show what we know. sorry if i have offended anyone.

this is really gud seva, :D a lot of these problems are occuring amongst the youth, and this publication is creating a lot of awareness. well done 2 the people producing these.

one of my cousins had an msn screen name of jatt fauji, i asked him to take it off coz its not sikhi, he said 'we're top' its who we are, i said that u cant call yourself both sikh and jatt because sikhs dont believe in caste, he said he has researched a book by karanpal singh which is in a gurdwara library (barkin gurdwara) which says caste is a part of sikhi. i waz just wondering if somebody can provide a line from Siri Guru Granth Sahib Ji which tells sikhs not to believ in caste system, as this holds far more truth than some book!!! thanks for the help
