  1. Akal Takht Jathedar quits CHANDIGARH: Akal Takht Jathedar Joginder Singh Vedanti on Tuesday quit his post alleging he was asked to resign by a top functionary of the SGPC, a statutory body that manages affairs of Sikh shrines. Shiromani Gurudwara Prabhandak Committee president Avtar Singh Makkar, however, said Vedanti quit on health grounds. He resigned "voluntarily citing ill-health as the reason", Makkar told reporters in Haryana's Kurukshetra district after a meeting of the SGPC executive committee. The meeting, lasting three hours, accepted Vedanti's resignation and appointed Golden temple Head Priest Gurbachan Singh as acting Jathedar of the Akal Takht, the highest temporal seat of the Sikhs. Earlier in the day, Vedanti, the senior high priest in a group of five that governs Sikhism from the Golden Temple in Amritsar, submitted his resignation to SGPC General Secretary Sukhdev Singh Bhaur. When contacted, the top Sikh cleric, who is in Amritsar, said Bhaur along with Rajinder Singh Mehta, a member of the SGPC executive committee, visited his place last night and asked him to resign. Vedanti declined to give more information leading to his resignation. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Cities/...how/3329544.cms
  2. Akal Takht Jathedar Vedanti resigns to evade sacking, Giani Gurbachan Singh is acting Jathedar WSN Bureau Giani Joginder Singh Vedanti: What an exit! AMRITSAR: In typical Badalshahi style of politics, Akal Takht Jathedar Joginder Singh Vedanti on Monday night was forced to resign from his post, resignation collected in person by two Badal loyalists from his residence in Amritsar, and Giani Gurbachan Singh, till now the head granthi of Darbar Sahib, was anointed as the acting jathedar within hours. The resignation was accepted by the SGPC Executive Committee meeting in Kurukshetra which also named the acting incumbent. Veadnti's resignation, which was not being exactly expected these days, was collected by SGPC general secretary Sukhdev Singh Bhaur just hours before the key meeting of the executive of the SGPC at Kurukshetra. Vedanti told reporters that Bhaur and SGPC Executive member Rajinder Singh Mehta visited him on Monday night demanding the resignation. A source close to Bhaur said Vedanti duly handed it over without making a fuss after confirming that it was indeed Badal himself who had sent the men seeking resignation. SGPC chief Avtar Singh Makkar was present when the resignation was placed before the executive meeting at Kurukeshtra. The resignation was accepted and Giani Gurbachan Singh's name was announced as acting jathedar. Akali Dal sources said in case of any refusal of Vedanti to resign, he would have been sacked on Tuesday. Giani Gurbachan Singh, Acting Jathedar (Acting on whose behalf?) Vedanti's tenure at the top temporal seat of the Sikh community, Sri Akal Takht Sahib, remained tumultuous throughout and his hardline stance against the RSS seemed to have perturbed the ruling Akali Dal top brass. However, on the issue of Dera Sauda sadh Gurmeet Ram Rahim, Vedanti's has been a rather soft approach, notwithstanding occasional strong words. Vedanti was hand-picked by Akali Dal supremo Parkash Singh Badal in 2000 when his predecessor Giani Puran Singh was sacked on March 29, 2000 after a tiff with the then SGPC president Bibi Jagir Kaur Badal. Earlier, Giani Puran Singh had succeeded after Bhai Ranjit Singh was sacked in a tug of war between Badal and the then SGPC chief Gurcharan Singh Tohra. Sackings and removals of Akal Takht jathedars have been leading to divides between various strains of Sikh community and demands for codification of the Jathedars' powers, privileges and role have been made repeatedly in the recent past. There was much speculation in the run up to the vote of confidence for the Manmohan Singh government and many sections claimed that Vedanti wanted to issue an appeal in favour of the Sikh premier but was talked out of it. Vedanti had nevertheless said that he and all Sikhs were proud of Dr Manmohan Singh but a hukamnama cannot be issued on a political issue. While the truth about what proved to be the last straw is now likely to remain in doubt, the Akal Takht jathedar's tenure will have a mixed assessment. Fever-pitched demands for Vedanti's removal continued throughout his tenure. His skirmishes with the Spokesman newspaper editor also kept him in the news. Recently, he got into an ugly turf war with fellow Jathedar of Takht Patna Sahib Giani Iqbal Singh on the issue of supremacy and Nanakshahi calendar. Vedanti's relationship with the influential Sant Samaj also remained less than smooth. During the last three decades, various jathedars like Prof Manjit Singh, Bhai Ranjit Singh, Giani Puran Singh and Vedanti himself got embroiled with one or the other controversy and the Sikh community often recalls the glorious stories from the era of Nawab Kapur Singh, Jassa Singh, Akali Phula Singh with nostalgia. More often than not, pliability and notions of political loyalty to dominant political denomination have been seen as key criteria for the job. Akal Takht jathedars are appointed by the SGPC executive committee and qualifications and privileges exist in the realm of the grey. On the positive side, Vedanti had issued an open appeal asking the Akali leadership and the Sikh sangat to work for the release of death row convict Devinderpal Singh Bhullar, had issued a hard hitting hukumnama against the RSS and advocated against summoning serving and former jathedars before the Akal Takht. 5 August 2008 http://worldsikhnews.com/30%20July%202008/...rcumstances.htm
  3. PUNJABNEWSLINE FLASH-Akal Takht Jathedar Joginder Singh Vedanti resigns AMRITSAR: Jatehdar Akal Takht (highest Sikh temporal seat of Sikhs) Gyani Joginder Singh Vedanti on Tuesday resigned from his post allegedly under pressure from SAD Supremo Parkash Singh Badal and his son Sukhbir Singh Badal. Vedanti said that last night Bhaur along with SGPC Executive member Rajinder Singh Mehta visited him and asked him to tender resignation.Vedanti said that both Bhaur and Mehta told him that now it was difficult for him to continue as Jatehdar Akal Takht, hence he should resign. The reports said that Vedanti had handed over his resignation to the SGPC General secretary Sukhdev Singh Bhaur. When asked about the reason behind the resignation, Vedanti said that he would detail everything in the evening but not yet due to certain reasons. SGPC chief Avtar Singh Makkar has said that resignation of Vedanti has been received and it would be placed in the executive meeting at Kurukeshtra in Harayana for its acceptance thereafter any information in this regard to be made before the media today afternoon. The reliable sources said that Chief minister Parkash Singh Badal had himself told Vedanti telephonically to step down otherwise he would be sacked in the executive meeting of SGPC to be held today at Kurukeshtra. Vedanti who had always stood by his political masters has in the recent past changed his tune and started showing signs of resistance on vital issues. Even his stand against Gurmit Ram Rahim Singh head of dera Sacha Sauda had hardened. http://www.punjabnewsline.com/content/view/11521/38/
  4. Giani Gurbachan Singh appointed new Akal Takht Jathedar AMRITSAR: The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbhandak Committee(SGPC) on Tuesday appointed Giani Gurbachan Singh as new Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht, the highest temporal seat of Sikhs here following resignation by Giani Joginder Singh Vedanti owing differences with SGPC and Shiromani Akali Dal(SAD) over the issue of Dera Sacha Sauda. The SGPC executive committee which met today at Kurukshetra accepted the resignation of Vedanti and appointed Giani Gurbachan Singh in his place. Giani Gurbachan Singh is presently head priest of Darbar Sahib in Amritsar. The reports said that Vedanti had handed over his resignation to the SGPC General secretary Sukhdev Singh Bhaur late Monday night when Bhaur along with executive member Rajinder Singh Mehta visited his home in Golden Temple complex and conveyed him the message of SAD supremo Parkash Singh Badal. Vedanti Tuesday morning informed the media that last night Bhaur along with SGPC Executive member Rajinder Singh Mehta visited him and asked him to tender resignation. Vedanti said that both Bhaur and Mehta told him that now it was difficult for him to continue as Jatehdar Akal Takht, hence he should resign. The reliable sources said that Chief minister Parkash Singh Badal had himself told Vedanti telephonically to step down otherwise he would be sacked in the executive meeting of SGPC to be held today at Kurukeshtra. Vedanti's resignation has raised many questions in the mind of Sikh sangat. It is belived that Vedanti was sacked for taking the side of radical Sikh organisations on the issue of dera Sacha Sauda and he had also favoured to vote for Sikh Prime Minister during trust vote of UPA government at center on July 22 last. http://www.punjabnewsline.com/content/view/11523/38/
  5. Vedanti's differences with SAD over dera Sacha Sauda cost him his job Tuesday, 05 August 2008 CHANDIGARH: Once again, the Sikhs world over have seen the unceremonial exit of their religious head, Jathedar (high priest) of Akal Takht Giani Joginder Singh Vedanti. The reason is the same-differences with the political masters but issues are different every time. Others shown door in the recent past are Bhai Manjit Singh, Bhai Ranjit Singh, Giani Puran Singh and even Bibi Jagir Kaur who was sacrificed for different political reasons. It is understood that Vedanti's increasing proximity with hard liner Sikh organisations on the issue of dera Sacha Sauda and his public opinion to vote for Sikh Prime Minister Dr.Manmohan Singh during UPA government's trust vote on July 22 last were key factors that compelled SGPC to pack up Vedanti. The reports said that Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal had told Vedanti to quit else he will be expelled. The grapevine is that Badal wants to remove political irritants with dera Sacha Sauda and Vedanti didn't fit in his scheme of things. Vedanti's tenure in the high temporal psot was full of controversies. He was appointed Jathedar of Akal Takht in March 2000 and was considered a pliable person specially cut out for the job to suit the requirements of Shiromani Akali Dal(SAD) and SGPC. Vedanti did his bit to appease the SAD and in the very fist meeting of five high priests on March 29,2000, in an unprecedented move rejected the three `hukamnamas' ( edicts) issued by his dismissed predecessor Puran Singh and `acquitted' all those who were ex-communicated from the Sikh Panth. Giani Puran Singh had replaced Bhai Ranjit Singh. In series of events in March 1999, Bhai Ranjit Singh had sacked his predecessor Bhai Manjit Singh and excommunicated Parkash Singh Badal who was exonerated by Giani Puran Singh who further excommunicated the then SGPC president Bibi Jagir Kaur and some head priests. Vedanti's decision to annul the edicts issued by Giani Puran Singh had benefited Bibi Jagir Kaur and Jathedars of Takht Keshgarh Sahib Manjit Singh and of Damdama Sahib Kewal Singh and Akal Takht head Granthi Bhagwan Singh. SGPC executive members Satnam Singh, Raghujit Singh Gora and Pritam Singh Bhatia and member Jaswinder Singh were readmitted to the Sikh fold. Vedanti' stand on Nanakshahi calender introduced by Bibi Jagir Kaur in 1999 had irked many in the Sikh religion as he had allowed certain amendments under pressure from Sant Samaj. He was instrumental in change of certain historic dates related with birth and demise of Sikh gurus. He was also blamed for working in tandem with RSS to harm the interests of Sikhs. Vedanti also came under fire for editing controversial script of "Gur Bilas Patshahi 6" reprinted by the Dharam Parchar Committee of the SGPC, Amritsar. Gur Bilas Patshahi 6 has regularly been recited in many Gurdwaras in the past. Although Giani Joginder Singh Vedanti and co-editor Prof Amarjit Singh had admitted that it contains some denigrating information, even then they have not tried to distinguish that how much is true and how much goes against the Gurbani and Sikhism leaving the readers in confusion. On another issue of Dasam Granth, Vedanti had issued an edict to stop any debate on it since a major section of Sikhs found the contents of Dasam Granth objectionable and not tenable under Sikh traditions. The Sikh hardliners have been demanding ban on Dasam Granth while the members of Sant Samaj have been advocating recognisition for it. In the recent past Vedanti had taken hard stand against dera Sacha Sauda head Gurmit Ram Rahim Singh and has joined the hard liners to spearhead an agitation for his arrest. His remarks that SAD MP's shall vote in favour of Sikh Prime Minister didn't suit Akalis politically. It is learnt that SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal had reprimanded Vedanti on his comments on trust vote. http://www.punjabnewsline.com/content/view/11525/38/
  6. http://www.sikhsangat.org/news/publish/europe/High_Court_backs_Sikh_s_Right_To_Wear_Symbol_Of_Faith.shtml High Court backs Sikh's Right To Wear Symbol Of Faith A Sikh schoolgirl who was excluded from her school for refusing to remove a Kara (iron bracelet worn for religious reasons) has won her High Court battle after a judge decided that the school's actions were unlawful under Britain's race and equality laws. Sarika Watkins-Singh, 14, was forced to take lessons in isolation for two months before being excluded from at Aberdare Girls' School last November because she refused to take off her kara, a slim steel bracelet that constitutes one of five religious symbols (5K's) observant Sikhs are expected to wear at all times. Her lawyers had told Mr Justice Silber the Kara was as important to her as it was to England spin bowler Monty Panesar. I'm so happy to know that no-one else will go through what me and my family have gone through. The school argued that Sarika's kara broke its "no jewellery" uniform policy which only allowed pupils to wear watchbands and plain ear studs. But yesterday Mr Justice Silber ruled that the kara was of "exceptional importance for religious and racial reasons" and that Sarika had therefore been the victim of "indirect discrimination on the grounds of race and religion" under the Race Relations Act and the Equality Act. Shortly after the judgment was announced, Sarika stood on the steps of the High Court holding her kara aloft and said: " I'm so happy to know that no-one else will go through what me and my family have gone through and no other pupil will ever get banned from wearing their kara again ... I am proud to be a Welsh, Punjabi, Sikh girl." Anna Fairclough, a lawyer from the civil liberties group Liberty which represented the Singh family, said: "This commonsense judgment makes clear you must have a very good reason before interfering with someone's religious freedom. Our great British traditions of religious tolerance and race equality have been rightly upheld today." During the court case the school tried to compare the kara to the Welsh flag, describing it as a symbol that engendered strong emotions but which was not a requirement of a culture or religion. But Justice Silber called the comparison "seriously erroneous" because "it totally ignores the critically important religious significance of a kara which is not shared by the Welsh flag." He also rejected the school's suggestion that their refusal to admit Sarika was similar to a number of recent successful court battles won by schools against Muslim pupils who have insisted on wearing full-length veils in contravention of their uniform policies. "There is an enormous difference between these very noticeable garments and the unostentatious kara which permits the wearer to wear every other aspect of the uniform policy," he said. The ruling is a major victory for Sikh campaigners. Aberdare Girls' School will have to readmit Sarika with her kara unless it seeks permission to appeal from the Court of Appeal. Under British law Sikhs, like Jews, are defined as a race as well as a religious group from a landmark 1983 ruling by the House of Lords that enshrined the right for Sikh boys to wear turbans in school. Dabinderjit Singh, a leading figure from the Sikh Federation, said: "Twenty-five years later we have had to return to the courts to fight for a new generation." Aberdare Girls' School was unavailable for comment yesterday.
  7. I am sorry for altering your opinion about me. But my response was sarcastic in the sense that I felt the press release was nothing more than the Feds seeking a commendation for their own involvement. We can clearly see from the media comments of the mainstream that people do not understand Sikhs and we clearly struggle in getting the message across. I am sure every single person on this forum has had prejudice towards them as they look different. Boys get picked on for wearing a turban and standing out. Girls get picked on for not removing the kes of their faces or arms. This always makes it hard for Sikh children to stand up for their faith and continue to be committed. What I question is why, in the last 40 years of Sikhs growing up in the UK, has no representation been made for Sikh children undergoing bullying. I personally know others who have approached Gurdwaras and Sikh organizations (Sikh Feds via Smethwick Gurdwara) over a bullying issues with their own children in UK schools and as the cases were not high profile enough they were not given much attention by the Sikh organisations. What made this case different was the fact that it hit the papers very early on and therefore invited the likes of the Federation and other groups to intervene as there was some attention to be gained. That's my gripe! Dear Rupinder Singh Please check your facts. The Sikh Federation (UK) became involved when the family went to Guru Nanak Gurdwara, Sedgley Street, Wolverhampton and they were put in contact with the Federation. Some of our members in Bristol met the family. Liberty approached the Sikh Federation (UK) to see how they could assist. The Federation lobbied the local MP Ann Clywd. This all happen before any publicity. The publicity started with the actions of the school, who excluded Sarika. Even yesterday the media was handled by Liberty who have been issuing press releases at each stage and liaising closely with the Sikh Federation (UK). The Federation has been involved in several cases of bullying and the reason why you may not know about it is that there has been no publicity because of the nature of bullying and the request of the families concerned. There is no winning with some for the Federation when it comes to publicity or producing an annual highlights booklet to demonstrate our work and be accountable, we will still be criticised. Our view is it is better to publicise in most cases rather than remain silent. We think other Sikh organisations that do good work should also issue press releases and an annual booklet would do them more good than harm. We often say we need to tell the general public about Sikhs so they are not mistaken for Muslims, here the conservative Daily Telegraph covers the 5K's with respect. At last we have some positive coverage. I would like to find out what alternatives ways some of the critics have for helping Sikh children and how they would implement in the near future. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics...e-to-Sikhs.html True. The judgement which is already having a massive effect on schools around the country will help many Sikh children in the future generations to come. This will seriously tackle the Kara problem during P.E./Sports activities, which generally Sikh school children have often had trouble with (obviously not to the extent of the Sarika case). More or less all mainstream newspapers and news channels have covered this. It has helped non-Sikhs to gain knowledge of the Panj Kakaar and their significance. Such things also aid challenging the 'mistaken identity' issue as well. Sikhs do not get such positive national media coverage often, this is a rare occurrence.
  8. Until our people get over their narrow-minded thinking and control their jealousy when others do good, we will achieve little in comparison to what we could collectively. A certain minority of Sikhs need to control their hate and prejudiced views towards the Panthic Sikh Jathebandhia who continue to do good work day and night. All who do good work, be it individuals or organisations, need to be recognised and supported. Without doubt, this episode has concluded very positively for the Sikhs where the judgement will go down in history. Congratulations to the family and to the Sikh groups who have been involved in this case from the beginning. This is excellent news for UK Sikhs!
  9. Absolutely 100% spot on! I think it is about time some "Sikhs" on this forum took a good look at what it means to be a "Sikh" - if Bhai Kineyaa Jee could see the light of Akaal Purukh in all, what happened to todays "Sikhs"? Its obvious that the Sikh federation has been instrumental in yesterdays outcome, and a true reflection of their motto "never flinch from performing righteous deeds". This case will not only assist Sarika Singh, but also the hundred (if not thousands) of school children who are discriminated against because of their RIGHT to wear the Kara - I know immediately, schools in Leicestershire are revisiting their policies with regards to the Kara and PE lessons! If Sarika Singh needs advice, help and guidance on Sikhi - I suggest she avoid this forum! Individual organisations (Young Sikhs UK, KAURAGEOUS etc) can welcome her with open arms - for Guroo Jee says: "charan saran gur EK penda jae chal, satgur kot penda agae hoe laith hae" - in my view, she has taken the first step - now Guroo Jee will do the rest! Finally... five years ago, I was a monee who was supported by the Sikh Federation... today, with the blessings and guidance of Guroo Granth Saahib Jee and the assitance of many brothers and sisters who saw me as one of them, I walk the Guroo's Amrit laid path, for the third year... think of what the same love, appreciation and respect for Sarika Singh could do to change her destiny. Well done Sarika and well done SF UK! Good post! Agree 100%
  10. MPs urge UK Government action on recent killing & arrest of Sikhs in India An Early Day Motion has been tabled in the UK Parliament by John Hemmings MP. Early Day Motion 2104 has been produced due to the overwhelming outrage against the continued oppression of Sikhs. (EDM 2104 is quoted at Endnote i ) The recent attacks against Sikhs follows protests by Sikhs against the killing of an innocent unarmed Sikh Balkar Singh on 20 June. Another Sikh protester Harmander Singh was then killed on 18 July. The armed forces and police in Mumbai have brutally attacked innocent Sikh protestors, as is evident through media reports and photographs. Rob Marris MP has also tabled a Parliamentary Question asking what protest action is being taken by the UK Government against India. [ii] (Full Question have been quoted in Endnote ii ) Bhai Amrik Singh, the Chair of the Sikh Federation (UK) said: 'We are pleased to see a successful partnership being built between the Sikh Federation (UK) and MPs from all the main political parties and that UK MPs are genuinely concerned with issues that concern British Sikhs. Amritpal Singh National Sikh Resource Centre ________________________________________ Early Day Motion EDM 2104 - DEATH OF BALKAR SINGH AND SIKHS IN INDIA 21..07.2008 Hemming, John http://edmi.parliament.uk/EDMi/EDMDetails....amp;SESSION=891 That this House notes with grave concern an unarmed Sikh, Balkar Singh, was shot dead in Mumbia on 20th June, with the killing resulting in widespread protests by Sikhs in cities throughout Punjab, Haryana and in Mumbia; is deeply concerned that since the incident the Indian armed forces and police have beaten and attacked unarmed Sikh men, women and children and thousands of Sikh activists in Punjab have been arrested to try and suppress peaceful protests; further notes that Bal Thakeray the chief of Shiv Sena, a right wing nationalist group, is fuelling the situation by reminding the Sikh minority of the anti-Sikh pogroms of November 1984 and that this is causing considerable distress to British Sikhs; and for this reason urges the Government to act immediately by raising its concerns with the Indian authorities. [ii] Parliamentary Questions which will be asked by Rob Marris MP Rob Marris (Wolverhampton South West): To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, what recent representations he has made to the government of India on the recent (a) violence against Sikhs in India and (b) mass arrests of Sikhs in India.
  11. Those who are not happy with high numbers of Sikhs/non-Sikhs taking Amrit just because of their jealousy of Sant Baba Ranjit Singh Jee Dhadrianwale, or their phobia with the "Sant" word should be ashamed. It has always been through Sant Mahanpurkhs that Gurmat Parchaar and Amrit Sanchaar has been done in mass numbers, without them, effective Parchaar and Amrit Sanchaar required to keep the Panth stable would not happen. Sikhs (so-called) should not even need to discuss such things about if high numbers of people taking Amrit is right or not. On one side, we need mass Gurmat Parchaar and Amrit Sanchaar to happen, on the other side we have this modern-missionary, Kala Afghana, Panjab Radio (UK), Ghagga, Bhausaria, anti-Panthic type thinking people who are not happy with it, primarily because it is a "Sant(s)" who is doing it. Such thinking and discussions like these are one of the biggest internal diseases of our nation. If one is against basic principles such as the support for mass Gurmat Parchaar and Amrit Sanchaar, then how can that person call them self a Sikh?

  13. Discrimination Of Sikh Employee At Asda Comes To An End A Sikh employee at an Asda Supermarket has been told he can return to work after being told by managers to either remove his kirpan or risk losing his job. On successful recruitment at the supermarket, Mr Singh informed management that he was a practising Sikh, therefore carried the 5 K’s. After having attended two full days of training at the supermarket, he went in for his first day of work and was asked to see the Assistant Store manager, who informed him that he would have to remove his kirpan but Mr Singh refused to do so. As a consequence, the manager did not allow him to go onto the shop floor. He was told to either take off the kirpan, wear a plastic one or to leave. He was therefore forced to make a choice between one of his essential articles of faith and his work. After Mr Singh contacted the National Sikh Resource Centre, he was advised to contact his local MP and make him aware of the situation. The National Sikh Resource Centre wrote to the supermarket explaining the significance of the kirpan to a practising Sikh, explaining how the law permits him and all Sikhs to wear and practice their religion in the fullest form. It was also explained that there may be a breach of authoritative position under the 1976 Race Relations Act and that it is justified under the Criminal Justice Act 1988 and Offensive Weapons Act 1996 for a baptised Sikh to carry a kirpan. Through consultation and educating the supermarket, Mr Singh has now been given his job back and Asda have changed its policy in relation to the kirpan. They have said that as long as the kirpan is in a safety harness and it is not in the public's eye they are more than happy to allow Mr Singh back to work. We are pleased to see that Asda have changed their mind, and the fact that they recognise Sikh employees have rights and are afforded protection under the law. Bhai Amrik Singh, the Chair of the Sikh Federation (UK) welcomed the outcome and described this as a positive step forward by Asda that other employers should note. This again is another case which shows the need for a Sikh Code of Practice which needs to be adopted by the UK government to stop potential discrimination cases arising against British Sikhs in the 21st century. You can contact the National Sikh Resource Centre about issues by emailing them on sikh_resouce_centre@yahoo.co.uk.
