  1. Interesting you mention China because what is happening there is there that boy to girl ratio is 3/4 to 1, the girls can pick and choose who to marry. They put a lot of demands before they would even consider getting married. The ratio in Haryana is far more extreme that brides are imported from other states. In Punjab, if the ratio is more extreme in the urban areas and since the majority of the cities are Hindu, it could very well be possible that the Hindu Punjabi sex ratios are more skewed than the Sikh ones and therefore it could be concluded that it could actually be a Hindu problem than a Sikh one. These are just random thoughts that I am sounding out.
  2. I don't personally believe that it is patriarchy when land is passed onto the son, I think it is patrileanal but there is a great deal of matriarchy ( mother calling the shots). These ladla sons tend be spoilt and pampered by the female relatives such as grandmother, bhuas and mothers. You will never get a dhota getting inheritance because that would potentially mean the juhai (son in law) want to get something, which mean all the rest of the sandus wanting something. It will create even more trouble as the daughter in laws will think that as they are the main women of the family and would want their entitlement. The closest example of this I can think of is Rajiv Gandhi (dhota inheritance).
  3. One example I find strange is female infanticide. Quite rightly it is being discussed as there are questions about the place of females in our families and societies and the so called claim that it is the patriarchy to blame. I have never known of any Sikh fathers ( since they are patriarchs) that hate their daughters or place their daughters at the bottom of the pile. In fact Fathers tend to be harsher on their sons than daughters (where does the term daddy's little girl come from) and vica versa with mothers who tend to be softer with their sons (mummy's boy). You see it the female infanticide issue come up in the news outlets all the time and they use this one birth statistic in Punjab in the ratio of male to female births and when they delve into the causes of the issue is patriarchy and the sexist attitudes of males in Punjab. There is no further discussion on what the real causes are rather than a very simplified, black and white ,feminist misinterpretation. There is no look into how the statistics were compiled, if there is an agenda, in what places these abortions are happening, who is pushing for these abortions in the families etc etc. I have known of sex selected abortions in Punjab for over 20 years, the media is suddenly aware of it. My observations is that in a lot of cases, the family chooses abortion when they require a son and only after they have a few girls. My observation in Punjab is that it is quite common to see a family with 3/4 girls and 1 boy and as the only boy to carry on the family name, this "ladla" is pampered and spoilt. If there is such a ratio imbalance, then why is there never a shortage of girls to marry of boys like in China. If this is a more recent phenomenon, how come it has not been noticed at school level, surely those all-girl convent schools would be complaining about the lack of school places being filled. Let me know your thoughts.
  4. http://www.jakara.org/openletter Just saw this open letter from Jakara Movement, where it talks about Sexual Abuse Awareness Month. I am a bit perplexed about this organisation particularly in the context of their make up, it seems to be some kind of Sikh feminist group based in the U.S. In their open letter, they state that British Sikhs are the forefront of speaking out against grooming by "some" Muslim men. Being based in the U.S., I do not think that they are in a position to make assumptions about the UK, clearly now that the evidence is coming out how widespread the grooming incidents are in the UK and how large these grooming networks are and the complicit cover up by the social services and the police, so to downplay it as "some" muslim men is an insult to the victims. As I read further down and they mention how there is a bigger problem of assault and sexual abuse in our community. Now I do not know what this particulars about this within our community, we are no angels but I do not think it would be worse than other communities. If there is a big problem, then yes it needs to be tackled. However, I am always concerned with this particular issue with Sikh females in that everything is blamed on "patriarchy". In Gupt Folder, there was a conversation about the mother in law- daughter in law problems which is a universal problem BETWEEN WOMEN and is about the POWER STRUGGLE BETWEEN WOMEN yet some how it is somehow the fault the patriarchy. Why is this word "patriarchy" banded as an evil word. The word patriarchy means "rule of the father".On the other post about the Birmingham Sikh getting beaten by 5 or 6 muslim males, he got into the altercation because his cousin sister was being harassed, he tried to protect her. Is that Patriarchy, has he been oppressing his sister because of his need to protect his sister. Some of you maybe fathers and brothers, but I for one am fed up with this Sikh male bashing.
  5. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2841225/Fury-police-bid-protect-Birmingham-grooming-gang.html Question to ponder If the West Midlands Police are capable of covering up the Grooming Scandal or protect the instigators, it could mean that they would be capable of ignoring this particular incident.
  6. It is only communal tension when the particular community is confronted for their wrong doing and put on the backfoot. When certain quarters harp on this "tension" then you know the right thing is happening.
  7. If Islam was just about believing in the creator and everything manifests from the creator which muslims called Allah then there is no problem. However, it is considered a whole life system and divides the world into two camps "Darl Ul Harb" and "Dar Ul Salaam". The non believers are in Ul Harb ( House of warfare) and believers are Ul Salaam ( House of Peace). For a Sikh, this particular view is incompatible because we do not divide the human race into warring camps. Like our tenth master Guru Gobind Singh Ji said " Recognise the Human Race as one". A muslim will consider only the 1.5 billion muslims as his brotherhood, we as Sikhs consider ourselves to be in the brotherhood/sisterhood of the 7.2 billion human beings on this earth and in time when we discover and make contact with aliens and other sentient beings we may feel that are in the brotherhood of trillions. We as Sikhs feel a connection to the whole universe as it all manifests from the Timeless Creator from which we all come from.
  8. Eduardo it is known to be a political ideology disguised as a religion.
  9. By extending Jagsaw's logic I hope there is no place for Sikhi to claim that all whites are racist when some whites attack a black & ethnic minority member. I also hope in Sikhi, there is no place to claim that every Hindu is caste-ridden bigot when RSS/BJP goons are on the rampage.
  10. The issue with a lot of the Sangat is that they are not really frequent gurdwara goers. For a lot of people, it is for social reasons i.e. Anand Karaj, Akhand Path and Sukhmani Path (these really are social events), in particular for women. It is a time for the new suits purchased with all the bling. Women always judge other women on what they wear and they are in competition with each other and are always trying to outdo each other. What really gets my goat is some of these young ladies whose chuni/dupatta keeps falling off because they wear it halfway as they do not want to spoil their hairdos. Funny how the elder bibian manage to keep their heads covered even when they are doing seva in the kitchen. MissedASingh, These girls that claim that the oppressive patriarchy is infringing in the right to be disrepectful in a Gurdwara would be perfectly compliant if they had to go to a mosque or synagogue.
  11. It would be great if every Sikh knew self defence, but for the past few decades a lot of people are aware of this attacking in numbers. Since the advent of the mobile phone and the fact that this particular community are prevalent in the cabbing profession, this particular community is very quick to mobilise in a very short period of time. As well as a police force that turns a blind eye to all these shenanigans, the odds seem to be stacked against us as Sikhs as well as other normal members of the community. First step is their mobility in numbers need to be curtailed some how so that the moment Abdul starts trouble he can't call on Mo, Raza,Shaz and the rest of his cousins. The normal tactic in this situation is to hit and run, usually one <banned word filter activated> would chase further than the others and then when he is on his own, you ambush him and beat him to a pulp so that it sends a message back to Abdul and the rest of the Kazas and Fazas. Don't know how it can be done, but it needs to be done.Sooner or later, the authorities will have to pull their fingers out and deal with this by way of curfews on youth particularly of this community. If they start to moan and winge about being victimised and their community leaders start coming out, you will know it is working.

  13. So it seems that in the height of the cold war, UK and USSR conspired with the Indian government to attack Sikhs. This is at the same time when UK was involved in training Muhajideen against Soviet troops in Afghanistan. That's politics for you, no permanent friends, only permanent interests.
  14. Subramaniam Swamy said this months ago, he even said this on Indian news outlets. His reasoning is that mosques in Saudi Arabia get demolished all the time and he was told by a Saudi official that a mosque is just a place you read namaz.
  15. I think we need to see the extent of inter-religious marriages in gurdwaras. What we need to do is for example is go back a couple of years and document each and every anand karaj and establish whether they are Sikh-Sikh marriages, Sikh-Non Sikh marriages or even Non Sikh- Non Sikh marriages. I am not too sure whether Gurdwaras disclose this kind of information, but I wonder if registry offices do since most gurdwaras have registry capacity. It would be useful to know if this information is available under Freedom of Information Act or if it is under Data Protection. Another method that could be done is to ask the regular bibian at the gurdwara, they seem to know every akhand path, sukhmani sahib path, anand karaj, saskaar that is happening. Just my two paisa.
  16. Funny thing is he never encouraged for his native Gujerati to be written in Devnagari script. Just remember that India never got independence because of Gandhi, it was WW2 that instigated the breakdown of the British Empire and it was the US that played a big part of dismantling it. These same leaders who wanted Independence of India are the same group of people who played a big part of being brown sahibs and sepoys who enable British rule over the subcontinent. If green aliens from Mars took over India, these types are the ones who would be brown nosing their new overlords.

  18. LGBTQ is some lobby organisation that also has a political agenda. It seems to want to show religious people as narrow minded bigots that oppresses gay people. Gay and lesbian people can also be narrow minded bigots too.
  19. Quick observation for someone who has had a kesh all his life, I find it very surprising that he has full hairline around the temples. You can always spot someone who has cut their kesh because there is hair missing around the side area. How much of his story is true, just wondering if he is some actor who is fronting some agenda.
  20. [quote name="simdim41" post="627531" timestamp="1425593271" DEAR PATRIACHY PLEASE STOP ABUSING WOMEN. DEAR WOMEN STOP ABUSING OTHER WOMEN. NO ONE "OWES" ANYONE RESPECT. IT'S EARNED! Would this not really be an issue of matriarchy rather than patriarchy? Punjabi families by and large are dominated by women, the only think patri about it is that it is patrilineal.
  21. If you look closely at the video, you can tell that fight was premeditated, fights do not start like that. Funny how a discussion about some kids fighting has turned into an issue about Canadian Sikhs in general.
  22. If you look at how the boy put up his dukes, he did kind of know what he was doing. When it goes to the ground, then you are in a precarious situation. Sometimes the best thing to do is to hit and run.
  23. I have seen this kind of thing before with Canadian kids, one between an apna and a chinese kid. The turbanned lad held his own, but like most fights they end up on the ground and that is when he got the kicking. When you are in a situation like this, where there is a possibility you may jumped, you run!
  24. This is Georgia, which in the American South. You can expect more racism in this part of the US. They did not get rid of racial segregation until the 1960s.
