  2. WGJK WGJF I'm just wondering how people generate posters for events? Posters such as: http://www.boss-uk.org/index.php?option=co...r&Itemid=31 Any suggestions would be appreciated. Cheers
  3. Is it just me or does that photo look a little 'Photoshopped'???
  4. There seems to be loads of Hindu 'dinner and dance' occasioans across the UK but hardly any Sikh ones. It's ashame...it would be nice to get together a load of Sikh people for a formal dinner and dance occasion!!! Anyone interested in organising one? Do you think anyone would turn up? LOL, 10 quid says someone will mention alcohol, meat and link it to the corruption in Sikhi today!!!! Actually, thinking about my own post again, its not such a bad idea. Is anyone interested in helping me organise a Sikh Dinner and Dance, a charity event...non-profit???
  5. LOL...I should have pointed that one out already....thats already taken care of. Any other ideads??
  6. OK, slightly off topic, but I'd appreciate any ideas you UK people may have. I'm looking for something to do for my other half to celebrate our 1st anniversary. I was thinking of something in and around this month and ideally an indian ball of some sort, but I can't seem to find any coming up. Any ideas from anyone anywhere in the uk? We were thinking of going down to Lecister or London near Diwali...what do you think? Cheers and hope someone can help!!!
  7. I agree with Khalsa4ever...this is a crazy debate... Although I can't quote Maharaji on what was said about Muslims, but it would shock me if it was clearly stated in Maharaji that Muslims should not be trusted....a lot of what is laid out in Maharaji is esoteric by its very nature...some can interpret it in one way and others in another way. There is a lot of bitterness in the Sikh community after partition et al, but what defines Sikhi? We claim to be a religion of tolerance, equality...but look how we are craving all this hatred and distrust of other religions...(this is meant in a general way not necessarily as a result of this paricular thread)...the corruption that has been spoken off stems from that very fact!!! Pyar...we should just start to respect and love one another. If any is corrupt and should not be trusted its our Mann...its OURSELVES... I for one respect and LOVE everyone in the world..be they Muslim, Hindu, Jew etc etc... My best friend is a Muslim, I have Christian and Hindu friends and we all respect eachothers views. Anyway. The point i was trying to make is that it is OURSELVES that we cannot trust....it is our mind that is our greatest enemy...not muslims or hindus.............
  8. Congratulations and good luck to them on their wedding next year!!! We also hope to get married year in India, with Gurus Ji's blessing. All the best. I'm afraid I can't offer much help on dress designs!!! But I'm sure my nanni can!!!
  9. WGJKWGJF Please take a look at this site, it contains so many short articles on many aspects of Sikhi...its worth reading!!! http://www.gurbani.org/menunew1.html
  10. Just to tag onto the sales pitch for personal tutors, if anyone in Manchester needs their kids tutoring in sciences upto GCSE's, I am able to offer some assistance. I hold a PhD in Molecular biology and Pharmacokinetics, MPharm (Master of Pharmacy) and am working at Manchester University as a research doctor. I've also spent time teaching many undergrad. students at Manchester. Also, if any sangat member would like to help me setup a free schools academic classes in the local Gudware in Manchester I'd love to hear from you as it's something I've been wanting to do for a long time but need help setting it up and running it. 11. Looks like there are no Sikhs on this forum from stoke!!!!
  12. Jus to ad my 50 cents, what about english translations of Maharaji? And in terms of libraries, should there be copies kept there? If not, how do those who want to know more about Sikhism get access to these? What about websites with Sikhi related media and Gurbani/Gurmukh? We have to look to the future and also address these issues.
  13. OK, I saw one singh guy...LOL I'm sure there have to be more....but oh well......it is Stoke after all...I know I wouldnt want to live there!!!! LOL
  14. WGJKWGJF Is there anyone from Stoke On Trent here? I work in Stoke on Saturday evenings and am trying to find a nice Gudwara to visit. Anyone? (PS, I work in Superdrug in the Potteries Centre<<in the Pharmacy, so come and surprise me on Saturdays, would be nice to meet some Singhs in what appears to be a Singhless town!!!) Many thanks
  15. LOL...wasnt meant to be an ad for them!!! I want to tie a dhamalla you see, and I read somewhere that mal mal is better then rubia.... I've only got rubia from farooqs so I shall see. If I dont manage to get any from them, could you send me some mal mal from bham? I can paypal or mail you the cash. Many thanks
  16. Does anyone know where I can get Mal Mal dastaar material from in and around Manchester? I'm going to check out Farooqs Fabrics in Rusholme, but does anyone else sell it? Thanks
  17. To attract folks in this day and age we need to appeal to the wider audience.......think about how many haircuts there are out there....how many Sikhi-folks are out there on the edge of Sikhism...following by name only. Do you really think they would be attracted by a Kirtan session? I doubt it. Have a Bhangra competition...followed by a talk or Kirtan....that why you attract LOADS more folks and you get them all involved...forming a community... Nothing wrong with it.
  18. Am based at Manchester University since 1997 (MPharM, PhD and now PostDoc researcher). If anyone is coming to Manchester Uni and need some guidence or a tour of our wonderful city then let me know!!!! Sher_Panjabi....wish I was going to bham uni to do that MPhil. I tried contacting them abuot whether they have a distance learning option, but to no avail. Could you find out for me? Or failing that, is there any way you could share the information you get from them. I REALLY want to do some kind our Sikhi related degree or masters, but there are none in the NorthWest!!!
  19. It depends on the person and people, and I dont think we can generalise in cases like this. For me, the pyar for my wife-to-be has brought me INTO Sikhi. I love her intesnsly, just as I love Maharaji....I think Maharaji brought her into my life to guide me and help me return to the flock, so to speak. So generally, I think it all depends on the individuals and I dont think anyone on the outside can really look in and judge. There is so much hatred in the world today, and maybe if we all just showed our love to another person it would make the world a better/peaceful place....
  20. quoting hitler is the easy way out. To quote him is totally out of context....its all relative......besides...we dont judge...GuruJi does. if u judge....doesnt it make u on equal footing as guruji. And....maybe if u killed someone, its karma playing out....we shoudlnt judge....just contiune to be good sikhs.....nothing more and nothing less
  21. To sitargirl, read the BBC website and it gives you details of numbers etc. Also, the poll isnt biased. Its aboout British Asians that back honour kilings, NOT British Sikhs or Muslims. Also, the thing that stands the asians our from the gora is how our RELIGION is inherently tied in with our CULTURE. Hinduism in India is a way of life, a culture and not just a religion. Sikhi is also tied into the culture of being a British Sikh. Islam is VERY MUCH tied into their culture. One could argue the West doesnt have a mix between religion and culture. But if you are taking about Asians, it's inevitable that you will bring in religion when discussing their culture as there is a VERY FINE LINE defining religion and culture.
  22. I agree, but I think we should be more cohesive with other cultures and associate more and mix more. Sikhs, I think, have a good rep. for doing this. But it's ashame our Muslim and Hindu cousins don't. Espicially muslims. I remember reading something in the papers a few weeks ago about some Uk muslim association lobbying the government for sharia law in the UK. I mean, come on....even I think this is not really a good idea!!! Oh well!!!
  23. Sometimes it strikes me as being odd. There are those who totall belive love for anyone is false... I agree partly there...only love for God is true. But didn't God create love in the world? And those who have never fallen in love with another being can never really understand and disregard the powerful feelings love brings. All things in moderation. LOVE is GOOD....love for another human being defines, in part, Sikhi. Love for GOD IS SIKHI. If you find another human being whom you LOVE and adore....and if you both happen to be Sikh....and you both want to get married...LOVE is a VERY GOOD thing. It's a balance. If you are a sex crazed person, or someone who loves in extreem....that is where the person is wrong.... But at the end of the day, if you love another....isnt that a good thing? Far better that we love another person, rather then hurt them or kill them.
  24. I think this is disgusting...for heavens sake....I can't believe the backwards attitude of so many Indian...I mean Sikhs/Muslims and Hindus. I know a Gursikh family who I adore, but when speaking to one of them about this, they would partake in such honour killings. Its not about religion totally, its basically if a Sikh (be they religious or not) runs off with a gora or a muslim etc...and the same with muslims. It stems from the close-knit communities who DO NOT mix with others...aka areas like Bradford, Burnley in the NorthWest. You always find little areas full of asians...mostly who do not mix and stay within themselves. This breeds social contempt for others and the law....it just leads to misguided ideas...aka the recent state of extremism in the muslim communities (where I think it is the MUSLIMS who need to look into themselves and acknoweldge that there are extreemists within their circle [i'm by no way being racist])... It's a shame...because we are all living in the UK...a Western culture...I'm not saying leave behind all our values, but we HAVE to adapt to survive. Anyway..that was just my 50cents.
