  2. A Pounds 5,710 Fine - the Only Language One Firm Understands ; 'NO PUNJABI', WORKER TOLD Source: Evening Mail; Birmingham (UK) Publication date: 2004-07-08 A SIKH who was sacked after speaking Punjabi at work has been awarded almost pounds 6,000. Balbir Kaur, aged 30, of Kings Heath, won pounds 5,710 after a Birmingham employment tribunal ruled that she had been racially discriminated against by Clive Mark Schoolwear Ltd, of Kings Norton. The company has lodged an appeal against the tribunal ruling through its representatives Richard Hall & Partners. Tribunal chairman Salim Ahmed said: 'We conclude that this was not a trivial one-off offence. The applicant was dismissed on the grounds of her race. 'She must have suffered some injury to her feelings and have been offended by this act of discrimination.' At a hearing in April the tribunal was told that Ms Kaur was employed as an office assistant at the firm in January 2003. She said that during an appraisal in March 2003 she was instructed by company director Philip Linz not to speak Punjabi at work. Ms Kaur claimed that she had only spoken in Punjabi on two or three occasions to another staff member on workrelated matters. A month later she was sacked after her employers stated that her telephone manner was unsatisfactory. Mr Linz told the tribunal in April that this was not an act of racism. 'I said it would be right for a member of my staff to ask the other Asian colleagues not to speak in their language. 'I did not consider that to be racist.' The tribunal heard that since this incident Ms Kaur 'thinks twice' before speaking in Punjabi. She said: 'I never used to think twice about speaking in Punjabi to those who understood it, but I look around and feel frightened of speaking it as I might cause offence.' Following this week's tribunal ruling in Birmingham Ms Kaur said: 'I am appalled that they have told me that they are going to lodge an appeal. 'No representative from the company turned up, they only sent their lawyers and they have still not apologised to me.' http://www.kcbs.com/pages/kcbs/news/news_s...egory=Computers

  6. SIMPOO SAYS ‘BALLE BALLE’ TO VEGETARIANISM IN NEW PETA AD PETA’s ‘No-Meat’ Message Turns Channel [V] Mascot 100% Vegetarian Mumbai – At a press conference today, Aditi Govitrikar – PETA’s (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) original lettuce lady – and designer Hemant Trevedi unveiled PETA’s latest print ad, which features Channel [V]’s 45-year-old Prof S S Sodhi (aka ‘Simpoo’) dressed in a lettuce-leaf sarong that shows off his now much healthier body. Declaring his support and love for animals across the world, Simpoo has renounced all things non-vegetarian and vowed to take his role as a champion for animals very seriously. Outlining Simpoo’s plans, Amar K. Deb, head of Channel [V], said, ‘Simpoo’s on a mission … to ensure that animals across the world are treated with love and respect. As a mascot who is loved by Channel [V] viewers across the country, Simpoo is confident of spreading the message of the ethical treatment of animals. Simpoo’s equity with our viewers is very high. It’s cool, hip and very healthy to be a vegetarian, and Simpoo will deliver this message in true Channel [V] style’. In the video version of the ad campaign, which was previewed at Olive’s Bar & Kitchen, Simpoo charts his mouth-watering diet plan: He starts his day with aloo de parantha and mango aachar and, later, dines on aloo gobhi and Sarson da saag. While his students and wife express surprise at Simpoo’s saying ‘na’ to chicken tikka, PETA is not surprised. After all, millions of people worldwide are making the switch to vegetarianism as they recognize the cruelty that is inherent in meat production. ‘We are very proud to have Simpoo support animal rig hts by choosing to become a vegetarian’, says PETA India’s Chief Functionary Anuradha Sawhney. ‘We hope that his fans from Jalandhar to Chennai will follow Simpoo’s example and realise that a vegetarian diet is the only way to go.’ Prof Sodhi, or ‘Simpoo’, as he is lovingly called by students and fans alike, burst onto Channel [V] three years ago and instantly captured the imagination of youth across the country. Simpoo is a maths teacher from Jalandar who believes that extracurricular activities such as dancing and sports are just as important as the academic subject that he loves to teach. His students adore him but also love playing pranks on him, and their antics are captured on various Channel [V] promos. Simpoo is now on a mission to spread the message of vegetarianism and the ethical treatment of animals – not just to his students, fellow teachers, wife and loyal fans, but to the world at large. Simpoo joins a host of celebrities who have ‘turned over a new leaf’ for animals, including Pamela Anderson, John Abraham, Aditi Govitrikar and Elizabeth Berkley. Please find a copy of Simpoo’s latest ad enclosed. For more information, visit www.PETAIndia.com. http://www.petaindia.org/newsnew/NewsItem.asp?id=2939
