actually if you look at pratan maryadai singhs are supposed to have a nishaan sahib in the dastaar. the story of gurdwara dumalgarh sahib in anandpur sahib was where maharaj trained for battle. the story goes to november 1703 when raja ajmer chand attacked the fort. the nishaan sahib had fallen and was damaged and maharaj was told of this. maharaj took a small piece of farra (cloth) from his keski and put it onto his dastaar. hence why we see images of maharaj with a piece of cloth hanging from his dumaala. the message was that the khalsa flag should be apart of the dastaar also.
