  1. We want to be seen as seperate from Hindus but we celebrate Diwali with great gusto, more than even Vaisakhi. There are many great significant events in Sikh history but we choose to celebrate the release of Rajas as if it is one of the most important things in our history. Most western Sikhs don't even know the jail story. Did we correlate this event with Diwali like the Europeans did with their winter festival with Christmas?

In this world, nothing gets accomplished without Maya. To feed this human body, we need Maya. To start Guru ka langar we need Maya. To build a Gurdwara Sahib, we need Maya. To do charity and help the humanity we need Maya. To purchase weapons and to fight a dharam yudh we need Maya. To establish Khalsa Raaj and to maintain its prosperity we will need Maya. Baani of Sarbloh Granth Sahib serves 2 main purposes: It can make a coward into a great warrior as it has amazing bir rass. Reading Sarbloh Granth Sahib, Maya becomes your daasi.
  3. For years I've been seeing the event of Guru hargobind Ji releasing 52 hindu princes from jail, spelt as "bandhi chhor diwas". However, correct me if i'm wrong, isn't the word "chhor" in hindi/punjabi sounds like or means thief? In my view it should be spelled as "shor/shord" meaning release. '

    Who else ie getting ready for Diwali? I know some Sikhs dont celebrate it because they say its for Hindus. I personally love it just because its a chance to eat sweets cakes and gulaab jaam (my favourite).

  8. 1.Release of Guru Hargobind ji from Gwalior Fort Bandi Chhor Diwas is the anniversary of Guru Hargobind ji being released from the prison at Gwalior Fort. It was on this day in 1619 A D when Guru ji was freed along-with 52 Hindu Rajput princes. 2. Role of Sai Mian Mir in Guru ji’s Release Sai Mian Mir, a noted Sufi Sant and friend of both the Guru and his father, had travelled to the Emperor’s Court to meet with Jahangir asking him to release the Guru. Not really wanting to free the prisoners the Emperor Jahangir cleverly added the following condition to Guru ji’s release: “whoever can hold on to the Guru’s cloak can be released.” 3. Bandi Chorh Diwas is not Diwali Bandi Chorh Diwas and Diwali are separate festivals although they take place on the same day every year. People often think of both of these events as the same but in fact they represent two quite different events in history. On Bandi Chorh Diwas, Guru Sahib was released from Gwalior and on Diwali day he reached Amritsar. On his reaching Amritsar the people lit up the whole city with thousands of Lights and Lamps. Bandi Chorh Diwas fall on Amavas of Month Assu. Bandi Chorh Diwas is celebrated at Gurdwara Data Bandi Chorh, Gwalior with Joshokharosh. 4. Celebrations held at Gurdwara Bandi Chor & Amritsar Gurudwara Bandi Chor is built at the place where the Guru stayed during his detention. The Sikhs celebrate this day as Bandi Chhorr Divas i.e., “the day of release of detainees”. 5. Shaheedi of Bhai Mani Singh ji On this day “Bandi chhor Divas” Bhai Mani Singh ji, who was the then Granthi Of Shri Harmandir sahib (Golden Temple) is martyred in 1734. This happened because Bhai Mani Singh ji refused to pay tax on a religious meeting of khalsa on Diwali. The Government arrested him and took him to Lahore. The Qazi pronounced the judgement thathe was to be cut to pieces limb by limb While the celebration of Bandi Chhor Divas affords Sikhs the opportunity to celebrate alongside our Hindu and Jain siblings, we must also consider what this day signifies for Sikhs as more than just a day of celebration involving candles and fireworks. The story of Guru Hargobind’s cloak symbolizes the connections with others to work towards common goals. We must look at our individual causes in the lens of how that work promotes the greater good.   9. Guru Amar Das Ji stated that the Sikh kaum should celebrate to festivals Diwali and Vasakhi, both were celebrated by Sikhs for a reason different to what is given now. So I have asked before with no responses why was this.

We protest against bipran ki reet when we criticise Sikhs who celebrate karva chauth, rakhree/raksha bandan etc because Guru Gobind Singh ji Maharaaj says 'Jab Lag Khalsa Rahe Niara, Tab Lag Tej Dioon Mein Sara. Jab Eh Gaye Birpran Ki Reet, Mein Na Karoon In Ki Parteet.' Under article 25 of the Indian constitution, Hindus include Sikhs, Buddhists and Jains. Are you celebrating Deepavali (divali) today? Do you prefer the blessings of goddess Lakshmi over Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaaj's Parteet.. Yeah yeah you didn't mean divali when you said happy divali, you meant happy bandi cchor divas. Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaaj was the first Guru to secure release of prisoners from Babar's prison. How come we don't celebrate that day? If we want to break free from the shackles of article 25 of the Indian constitution and the constitution in general, we must start by celebrating Bandi Cchor Divas on another day in line with Gurmat? After all we have different dates for Gurpurabs depending on which calendar we follow. SGPC could declare another date to pray for the release of all prisoners still languishing in jails around the world. I realise ive jumped from one point to another and I appologise if ive offended anyone. I'm not saying don't celebrate Bandi Cchor Divas, just saying we need to know what we're celebrating and when. How does Bandi Cchor Divas coincide with Divali? Guru Hargobind Ji Maharaaj was released on Divali day and made it to Amritsar on the same Divali day from Gwalior, south of Agra which today would take one 8hours in a train, in those days 5days atleast on horseback? thats assuming Maharaaj did not stop on way to meet Sangatah who would of course have been greeting and congratulating. So how exactly does Divali and Bandi Cchor Divas coincide? Is this an accurate depiction of Sikh history and an accurate interpretation of Sikh sentiment? Or are some Sikhs so eager to celebrate Divali, and so fervent to want to link Divali to Sikh practice and tradition that they simply had to find or create an incident that is suggested to have happened on or close to Divali day, and use that as a pretext to celebrate? and why do we not celebrate the Bandi Cchor Divas of Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaaj from Babars prison along with the innocent prisoners mostly women and children?! or does that not matter since there was no divali or raksha bandan or karva chauth then?! Why aren’t Sikhs extolled to celebrate Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaaj’s Bandi Cchor Divas? Why is there no Deep Maala to commemorate this day? Because it does not coincide with Divali? Or it did not happen close enough to Divali day? Or there was no Harmandar Sahib to be lit up with lamps then? Or simply because this Bandi Cchor provides no pretext for celebrating Divali? We light candles and deevay and fireworks polluting our atmosphere...WHY? is a celebration not complete without them? if this is not Bipran Ki Reet, i dont know what is. I appologise again if ive offended anyone. and if im wrong in what i say, I guess Maharaaj will be the judge of that. but my intention is not to offend anyone. Pul Chuk Muaf Ji.     How to you explain to young children (4yr olds) about Diwali? I just want know to know how you would break it down for them. Why did Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji go to prison? What answers would you provide children with? I would love to hear your feedback. Thank you.
