FROM TEMPER TANTRUMS TO TERRORISM

Its amazing how toddlers around the age of two to three suddenly

realise the value of tantrums. If they're bored – do a

trantrum. If they get told off – throw a tantrum. If they're

being ignored – throw a tantrum. They make so much noise, shed so

many tears, sprawl out over the floor, embarrass you in the middle of

the supermarket so that you just cant ignore them. But as soon as

you pick them up, they smile and start speaking sweetly.

Unfortunately, they have learnt "When I scream and shout then I get

my way".

Then around the rebellious teenager years, the grown-up kid throws

bigger and more dangerous tantrums. Rebels against parents and

society. Breaks all the rules, shouts back, accepts no blame, sees

parents and authority as limiting their freedom.

After marriage you may get the raging wife, who stayed silent whilst

living with the extended family, but then snapped one day. And now

constantly berates her husband, complains about everything, shouts to

get her own way. When she was a kid she learnt to get her way

through tantrums and even her silence was a silent protest showing

her displeasure.

Are the religious terrorists any different? Do they feel they have

no other way of getting attention so blow up innocent people to force

the governments to take them seriously.

From a toddler and her mother, to a teenager and her dad, and a

terrorist and the government there is one common thread – BREAKDOWN

OF COMMUNICATION.

One party holds the power, the other feels they have to fight for

their rights.

We live in a day and age where there are thousands of books and

courses about improving communications skills, negotiating and

getting on with others. Yet in most houses and communities and

countries, the lack of people skills is the main reason problems turn

into violent conflicts.

Why is it that a father kills his daughter for having a boyfriend

from another faith? Why is it that groups of people fight each other

in the religious places? And then fight other groups from other

religions? Followed by fighting Governments using means that

involve killing and hurting people? Then justify the violence in

the name of God?

There is one simple reason and that is when you no longer see God in

each and every heart then you have no reason to respect life. This

happens when your religious mentors teach you that observing your

groups rigid rules and regulations is more important than kindness to

all living beings.

How could one tribe in Rwanda massacre millions of other people from

a different tribe? The very same people they grew up with? Because

over a decade the Generals spread racist attitudes over the

radiowaves. These attitudes basically blamed the other tribe for

their problems. The Generals ensured that the other tribe were seen

as being no better than animals. Of course animals are slaughtered

everyday without any sense of guilt or shame by the tribesman. So

when the massacres started of the other tribe no sense of wrongdoing

was felt.

These kind of attitudes have existed with all conquoring people.

So you'd think relgion would come to the rescue, teach people to

help each other, care for each other. Guru Nanak Dev Ji took it to

the extreme by saying that God resides in each heart. Gurbani says

it again and again that God is in three places at once – All-

Pervading, In your own heart and in every heart. Guru Gobind Singh

ji said "Recognise the whole human race as one." All the great

religious leaders have valued human life.

Why is it then that terrorists appear in each relgion? How did

people go from being taught that God is in the heart, to having no

problem killing others in the name of God? The very God they are

trying to please, they go and kill when they break a heart.

Last weeks terrorist bombings in London are suspected to be Islamic

extremists. My friend a Sufi told me that there is a hardcore

element of Islam called the Wahabis who are more insterested in rules

and regulations than spirituality.

Sheik Farid ji, one of the bhagats and also a Sufi has written in

gurbani not to break a heart because God resides in the heart. The

Qu'ran has a similar message

"If anyone slew an innocent person it would be as if he slew the

whole mankind and if anyone saved a life it would be as if he saved

the life of

the whole mankind" [Al-Qur'an 5:32]

There is no true relgion that preaches violence and killing. Yet

these terrorists from all relgions are full of hatred and twist the

religion to fit in with their beliefs, rather than straightening

their twisted beliefs with what the Relgious Founders taught to them.

As Sikhs we have the greatest teachings of the heart in gurbani, yet

we see violence in our homes, in our gurdwaras, in our communities

and with governments. Once you stop seeing God in every heart,

whether a Muslim or a Hindu, or your daughter or your Boss, then it

is only a matter of time before you views will become extreme

followed by violence. There is a divine laaw that says that like

attracts like, whatever level of consciousness you are at is the type

of people you attract. If you are a religious racist, then you will

attract those kind of people who will help to harden your views and

bring you into their fold. And in the name of God you will commit

the worst attrocities.

Before doing anything ask yourself "Is this getting me closer or

further away from God?" And remember that GOD is GOOD. So only do

goodness to others, only think goodness for even your enemies. Guru

Arjun Dev ji said, "I see no one as my enemy nor is anyone a

stranger to me, I have made the whole world into my friend ..na koee

bairee nahee beganaa, sagal sung hum ko banaaee."

Keep this thought as our highest guiding light in this world. Only

return kindness for hate. Only throw flowers in return for being

stoned. Sheik Farid ji says in gurbani that if someone comes and

beats you with fists, kiss their feet and go home.

The path to God is to become the humblest, sweetest, kindest, loving

and truthful person you can. And whilst doing that remember the Name

of God – SatNaam SatNaam. Anything else done in the name of God is

just violence. Why do so many relgious people go down the route of

violence? Because their hearts have not been mellowed by a Sant.

Without a true spiritual mentor, all other religious mentors lead you

to astray.

God bless you, our prayers are with the hurt and the homeless.

Dust of your feet.

Yes a very nice article but the author should not have accepted quotes from the Koran at face value.

"If anyone slew an innocent person it would be as if he slew the

whole mankind and if anyone saved a life it would be as if he saved

the life of

the whole mankind" [Al-Qur'an 5:32]

A case in point is the above quote. This quote has been repeated ad nauseam on Tv for the last week. On the face of it the above quote seems to fill the demand that the UK media seek to fill that Islam is a religion of peace and doesn't advocate violence. The writer of the article as well as the many Muslims who have been trying somewhat unconvincingly to promote the 'peaceful' religion of Islam are just trying to fool the non-Muslims.

The actual verse of the Koran is-;

5.32] For this reason did We prescribe to the children of Israel that whoever slays a soul, unless it be for manslaughter or for mischief in the land, it is as though he slew all men; and whoever keeps it alive, it is as though he kept alive all men; and certainly Our apostles came to them with clear arguments, but even after that many of them certainly act extravagantly in the land.

[5.33] The punishment of those who wage war against Allah and His apostle and strive to make mischief in the land is only this, that they should be murdered or crucified or their hands and their feet should be cut off on opposite sides or they should be imprisoned; this shall be as a disgrace for them in this world, and in the hereafter they shall have a grievous chastisement,

One can see that the 'islam means peace' brigade have missed out the crucial lines unless it be for manslaughter or for mischief in the land as well as totally discarding the next verse.

The verse is actually saying that Allah had prescribed the verse for the children of Israel.. ie the JEWS. this verse is in the Jewish literature of the times of Mohammed and he would have picked it up from the many jewish people he met during his days as a merchant. The second verse tells us what Allah supposedly wants as a punishment for those who wage war against him or make mischief in the land. It can easily be argued by the Jehadis that not following Islam and taking another religion is a form of making war on Allah. That not following Islam is making mischief in tha land.

I commend whoever wrote the article but I ask that he/she be weary of repeating Muslim claims to being peaceful without investigating their claim further.
