Panjab Radio'S Surjit Ghuman Awarded Mbe

Founder of Panjab Radio, Surjit Singh Ghuman has been awarded an MBE for services to broadcasting.

Based in Springfield Road, Hayes, the station was set up in 2000, and Mr Ghuman says that his goal was to give a voice to Britain's Sikh Panjabi communities.

Eleven years on, Panjab Radio is now hot on the heels of UK frontrunner and has an estimated over 400,000 listeners every week, broadcasting in Greater London, the Midlands, West Yorkshire and North East England on DAB radio, in Europe on Sky and worldwide on www.panjabradio.co.uk.

Mr Ghuman, 49, moved to Slough in 1976 from village Ghuman, in Eastern Panjab, North India, at the age of 13, and attended Holmewood School in Langley and currently living in Taplow Buckinghamshire.

He become Britain's youngest Magistrate at the age of 29, at Maidenhead Magistrates Court before starting Panjab Radio.

Speaking about the MBE, Mr Ghuman said, "I am thrilled to be receiving this honour. "When I first got the letter through, I had to control my feelings. "I work seven days a week and love what I do. After eleven years people are still enjoying the service, which is very rewarding for me. I would like to thank everyone who have appreciated and supported the work I have done for the Panjabi community and would have never had the privilege of receiving such an award the support of Panjab Radio’s listeners."
