ਜਬ ਉਸ ਕਉ ਕੋਈ ਦੇਵੈ ਮਾਨੁ ॥

jab us ka-o ko-ee dayvai maan.

When someone tries to appease her,

ਤਬ ਆਪਸ ਊਪਰਿ ਰਖੈ ਗੁਮਾਨੁ ॥

tab aapas oopar rakhai gumaan.

then she takes pride in herself.

ਜਬ ਉਸ ਕਉ ਕੋਈ ਮਨਿ ਪਰਹਰੈ ॥

jab us ka-o ko-ee man parharai.

But when someone puts her out of his thoughts,

ਤਬ ਓਹ ਸੇਵਕਿ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰੈ ॥੨॥

tab oh sayvak sayvaa karai. 2

then she serves him like a slave. 2

ਮੁਖਿ ਬੇਰਾਵੈ ਅੰਤਿ ਠਗਾਵੈ ॥

mukh bayraavai ant thagaavai.

She seems to please, but in the end, she deceives.

ਇਕਤੁ ਠਉਰ ਓਹ ਕਹੀ ਨ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥

ikat tha-ur oh kahee na samaavai.

She does not remain in any one place.

ਉਨਿ ਮੋਹੇ ਬਹੁਤੇ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੰਡ ॥

un mohay bahutay barahmand.

She has bewitched a great many worlds.

ਰਾਮ ਜਨੀ ਕੀਨੀ ਖੰਡ ਖੰਡ ॥੩॥

raam janee keenee khand khand. 3

The Lord's humble servants cut her apart into pieces. 3

ਜੋ ਮਾਗੈ ਸੋ ਭੂਖਾ ਰਹੈ ॥

jo maagai so bhookhaa rahai.

Whoever begs from her remains hungry.

ਇਸੁ ਸੰਗਿ ਰਾਚੈ ਸੁ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਲਹੈ ॥

is sang raachai so kachhoo na lahai.

Whoever is infatuated with her obtains nothing.

ਇਸਹਿ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਕਰੈ ॥

iseh ti-aag satsangat karai.

But one who renounces her, and joins the Society of the Saints,

ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਓਹੁ ਤਰੈ ॥੪॥੧੮॥੨੯॥

vadbhaagee naanak oh tarai. 41829

by great good fortune, O Nanak, is saved. 41829

The pleasures in the world are what transformed humans to wild unstable beasts. By enjoying the corruptions of pleasures how can humans ever transform into an angel.

pasoo maanas cha(n)m palaettae a(n)dharahu kaaliaa

They are nothing more than beasts, wrapped up in human skin; they are black-hearted within.

Only by true actions a human body is obtained but once it is, their actions become false. They can no longer be called a human being because they lost the understanding of the human life and have turned this human form into the form of a beast loosing their treasure. Thus, their true self within withers away and can no longer understand themselves.

man bilaas bahu ra(n)g ghanaa dhrisatt bhool khuseeaa

With the mind caught up in playful pleasures, involved in all sorts of amusements and sights that stagger the eyes, people are led astray.

They left their crops and soon others became their owners. They have forgotten their roots. By pleasures they are controlled by the master; greed because of their egotism, selfishness and conceit.

anik anik bhog raaj bisarae praanee sa(n)saar saagar pai amar bhaeiaa

Indulging in all sorts of princely pleasures, O mortal, you have forgotten God; you have fallen into the world-ocean, and you think that you have become immortal.

Falsehood; Maya is the chief of the thieves existing in us all that orders them to stick to her wherever she goes. The village is now burning from the fires of Kalyug. The soul is now stolen from its true owner; God. They lost their home and lost their beloved, so now death becomes their ever-lasting companion. Death is always there with us counting our remaining breaths. What joy it is for death to seize and shred our soul whilst taking it to Dharam Rai to judge us of our good or bad deeds.

mirath hasai sir ooparae pasooaa nehee boojhai

Death hovers over his head, laughing, but the beast does not understand.

Discarding truth for falsehood we are entangled in the net and in love with the enemy of God; Maya. Death punishes all other works of one but the one that contemplates on the one Lord, death does not heed anything. All obstacles shall be removed. God is our true companion that does not ignore his creation as he sustains it all, so why ignore him.

kaparr bhog lapattaaeiaa sueinaa rupaa khaak

People are entangled in the enjoyment of fine clothes, but gold and silver are only dust.

hYvr gYvr bhu rMgy kIey rQ AQwk ]

haivar gaivar bahu ra(n)gae keeeae rathh athhaak

They acquire beautiful horses and elephants, and ornate carriages of many kinds.

iks hI iciq n pwvhI ibsirAw sB swk ]

kis hee chith n paavehee bisariaa sabh saak

They think of nothing else, and they forget all their relatives.

isrjxhwir BulwieAw ivxu nwvY nwpwk ]2]

sirajanehaar bhulaaeiaa vin naavai naapaak 2

They ignore their Creator; without the Name, they are impure. 2

What good are worldly pleasures if they are not taken to any account and only leave one in vast pain and misery in the end? All pleasures engaged in the world does not give anyone happiness as they are tasteless and insipid. This is all just Maya’s illusion which will all seem bitter and will turn to ashes in the end. The pleasure of Maya looks very sweet to us but really we are playing with the nose less queen grinning at us with her deceitful smile. We may seem happy on the outside but inside we are miserable, fooling ourselves with fake worldly love, feeding our soul with poison.

the excitement of the chase and princely pleasures

man n suhaelaa parapa(n)ch heelaa 3

- but still, the mind is not made happy by such illusory diversions. 3

Through engaging in one pleasure we want more as all that we engage in does not satisfy the mind so we keep on searching for more. The worldly pleasures do not quench our thirst for the soul but just satisfies the demons within. When we laugh in joy it is not us laughing it is the demons within. The pleasures in the world ends in an instant; they never last or give satisfaction only leaving one diseased and confused. One cannot find the path of God if they are blinded by falsehood day and night. This blind person still loves the darkness even when the visible passes away. They attached themselves so much to the shadow of Maya that when the shadow passes away they repent.

harakhahu sog vijog oupaae khapaaeiaa

From sinful pleasures come sorrow, separation, birth and death.

Only the contemplation on God’s name gives one fulfilment, leaving one with satisfaction of all hungers and joys illuminating the mind and body. The mind becomes content and the soul receives consolation by hearing the Guru’s grace. All the worldly joys we search for in all four directions that can be found from Naam. Only when we remain in the world but detach ourselves from his creation, we become the slave of the slaves.

raaj ra(n)g maal ra(n)g ra(n)g rathaa nachai na(n)g

Intoxicated with power and thrilled with wealth, they delight in their pleasures, and dance about shamelessly.

No wealth belongs to us as we are only his creation. Only God is unique from us, all his creation is all the same and under his command of his desires and pleasures, so everything belongs to God. The creation is all God’s playful things. We have no right to steel his creation so before we take something, in remembrance of God we thank God for it as a gift from him. If we just take as a thief without remembrance of God we pass our life in vain.

"My body and my wealth; my ruling power, my beautiful form and country-mine!"

suth dhaaraa banithaa anaek bahuth ra(n)g ar vaes

You may have children, a wife and many mistresses; you may enjoy all sorts of pleasures and fine clothes.

har naam ridhai n vasee kaaraj kithai n laekh 1

And yet, if the Name of the Lord does not abide within the heart, none of it has any use or value. 1

Only with contemplative remembrance of God’s name shall one be honoured and receive a position in the end as one gained a reputation of righteousness. Only then ones deeds will be taken to account. Only then one will not leave empty handed and will have a place to stay. Discarding the pleasures in the world and only live in truth in his name we obtain true happiness and ever-lasting state of contemplation is achieved. True pleasure is found in naam but even then when we receive God’s true pleasure, we remain detached as pleasure and pain will be seen alike. We even begin to forget how to enjoy worldly pleasures. Therefore, we live above these human qualities.

Renouncing the shallow pleasures of the world, she obtains the supreme delight.

Meeting the Guru, one comes to look alike upon pleasure and pain,

In addition, attaching ourselves as a greedy moth to pleasures in the world will only leave us with immense pain and dissatisfaction as it does not quench the thirst of us. We shall never find the true spiritual pleasure of the world within if we attach ourselves to the outer world. How can naam ever delve in the mind if we are attached to Mayas filth? When we bear naam in our hearts all objectives shall come to us as God abides in the heart and all can be fulfilled by God. As a Khalsa we need to live with full love of God. We can only obtain true spiritual love when we remain detached from the world and Jap his name with immense love. God is the only one that has been generous to us from the beginning whilst Maya has only left us with pain and misery. Maya is never there beside us, only the unseen God who is forever taking care of his creation is beside us. Therefore, detach from his creation but lovingly attach to the creator.
