Two lawmakers have written letters asking other Congressmen to write to the Defence Secretary to allow Sikh youths to serve in the military with their turban. "We are writing to request that you join us in signing the attached letter that we are sending to Secretary (Robert) Gates regarding a fundamental issue of fairness, justice, and religious freedom: the right of Sikh Americans to abide by their religious articles of faith while serving in the United States Armed Forces," wr…

Came across this article and reference to trying to falsely blame Sikhs for the Bhopal gas tragedy: An air of contaminated arrogance Ruchi Kumar Sat, Jul 25, 2009 10:19:09 IST I HAVE been reading about the Bhopal gas tragedy for many years, but recently my curiosity was piqued by an article carried in the Tehelka (Air, Water, Earth And The Sins Of The Powerful, issue dated 5 April 2008). I have since then gone back and done a little more research on that subject. While the Indian government and the government of Madhya Pradesh refused to even admit that there was a major health threat as a result of the catastrophe, let alone take responsibility for their own citizens…

Akal Takht jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh stated this on Sunday, while addressing a function organised at Sultanpur Lodhi, to mark the ninth anniversary of the kar sewa of Kali Bein. Giani Gurbachan Singh said the Sikh community should focus on protecting water-related natural sources. “We should start the campaign of making environment clean from our own houses and localities. With this, our city, our state and the country will become clean and green,” he added. The chairperson of Bhagat Puran Singh Pingalwara, Bibi Inderjeet Kaur said the selfish ends o…

OXFORD’S Sikh community has accused the city council of not doing enough to help them find a new place of worship as they face eviction from the house they have been using as a temple. Sikhs have been ordered to stop worshipping at a semi-detached house in Cherwell Drive, Marston, which they have been using for more than three years. In January, the council refused an application for retrospective planning permission to change the use of building from a place of residence to a place of worship. The Sikhs were also ordered to demolish a single-storey extension to the building, which is used as a congregation room, as it was put up without planning consent. The Sikh…

Contents of a letter written by former USA President Abraham Lincoln to his son’s headmaster 150 years ago have been put on notice board of educational institute that fall in the area. The basic intention of this educational institute is to persuade parents not to overprotect their wards. Translated into Punjabi for the parents’ convenience, the script shows that the then US President, instead of protecting his son had requested his headmaster to do something to inculcate discipline in him (his son). “I know that everybody is not good by nature but teach my son that there is a law for every rogue. Though majority of politicians are selfish, there is no dearth of patri…
