  1. yea I think CaptainQ took this thread in the wrong direction and pointed his finger against AKJ in specific, but some AKJ keertanees do sing in such tunes along with raagi and other keertanees, I feel that one of the ways we can tackle this is to train ourselves to sing more in raag as well..
  2. Vaaheguroo jee kaa khaalsaa, Vaaheguroo jee kee fateh! I know we should all strive to learn and do keertan in raag as per gurbaaNee, understand the raag/taal system, and go further to sing in tanti saaz (string instruments), but for many who sing on vaja and not in raag... Is there such a thing as 'inappropriate tunes' on vaja when one is doing keertan? For example, using tunes of famous hindi songs that are very popular among the mass? I understand that some music directors in the past may have taken these 'tunes' of some keertanees and used them for songs, but should the "ragees" or keertanees be taking tunes out of hindi songs for a shabad? Does that constitute as an 'inappropriate tune' for a shabad? I was talking to a singh and he said that tune is inappropriate and may create unwanted thoughts in the mind of sangat? I wanted to get some opinions on the topic.. Vaaheguroo jee kaa khaalsaa, Vaaheguroo jee kee fateh!

Vaheguru ji ka khalsa, Vaheguru ji ki fateh! If you are a amritdhari singh and she is a amritdhari singhni you both have committed a bajjar kureht (one of the major sins according to rehat maryada) and you both must present yourselves in front of punj piaare before you get married, you don't have to go together but can go separate, but you've committed adultry which you must get tankhah from the punj piaare where they will advise you further. Vaheguru ji ka khalsa, Vaheguru ji ki fateh!

  8. Langar is to be distributed like degh is distributed in maharaj's hajooree. Same way, in gurduaara saheb, langar should be distributed with everyone sitting as equals and are being served by the sevadars. In the times of our guru sahibaans langar was distributed with everyone sitting and the langar being brought to them its just a sign of respect, instead of asking the sangat to come up and "get the food" so to speak. When sangat lines up to get the langar there's only 3-4 sevadars that are needed to distribute langar and others can't do anything, whereas if sangat is sitting down then there can be like 3 baltiaa of daal, sabji, dahi, etc. where whoever wants to do seva can, but at the same time: lgy idvwn mUl n jwvY rihq ibnw pRswd bRqwvY ] lagae dhivaan mool n jaavai rehith binaa prasaadh brathaavai || Sinful are those who show disrespect while in the Divaan; sinful are those who distribute food or Parshaad in the Gurdwara without living a life according to the code of conduct. Bhai Nand Laal Jee Its just practical for sangat to sit in rows and be served langar, instead of making a huge line that may extend to the outside of the gurdwara if there's a large amount of sangat present, they would also become discomforted to stand such a long period of time before they are served, like in the following image if sangat was served in such a way in large gatherings then why change it? Community kitchens came into existence with the Sangat or holy fellowships of disciples which sprang up at many places in his time. Sikhs sat in pangat (literally a row) without distinctions of caste or status, to share a common meal prepared in the langar. Besides the kitchen where the food was cooked, langar stood for the victuals as well as for the hall where these were eaten. The disciples brought the offerings and contributed the labour of their hands to prepare and serve the food. The institution of Langar had thus demolished the long established caste barriers and gender prejudices of the time. Here's some more interesting information on langar: Guru ka Langar (literally, langar or refectory of the Guru) is a community kitchen run in the name of the Guru. It is usually attached to a gurdwara. Langar, a Persian word, means 'an almshouse', 'an asylum for the poor and the destitute', 'a public kitchen kept by a great man for his followers and dependants, holy persons and the needy.' Some scholars trace the word langar to Sanskrit analgrh (cooking place). In Persian, the specific term langar has been in use in an identical sense. In addition to the word itself, the institution of langar is also traceable in the Persian tradition. Langars were a common feature of the Sufi centres in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. Even today some dargahs, or shrines commemorating Sufi saints, run langars, like Khwaja Mu’in ud-Din Chishti’s at Ajmer.
  9. yea, agree with singhstah, why do some people have a chip on their shoulder and are ready to pounce on others every chance they get, if he got PM's and he is liked by some are you jealous that you don't, seriously, stop hating its not doing you any good, only harm, and no I didn't PM him to come back. For people who think its egotistical, according to bani you also have ego in pointing at the flaws of others, so live and let live, accept and love others for who they are, once you start to accept you will not be so quick to judge, for you it could mean moving a few fingers and hitting 'add reply' but to someone it may be hurtful, so think before you post as you may be gathering more paap than punn. Always evaluate yourself before you evaluate others.
  10. Alot of people like me don't understand the meaning of bibek and only adopt the dietary bibek which becomes dikhava unless man/budh bibek is also kept which includes situations such as marriage, controlling the mind from getting involved in certain activities, keeping amritvela, rehat, memorizing more bani, etc. From keeping such bibek one learns to control the 5 vikaar better and progresses in their jeevan, those who don't understand bibek or misinterpret it, only take into consideration the dietary aspect of it and not the spiritual aspect.
  11. wow, this topic is like 5 years old, I wonder how people dig stuff back from so deep.
  12. Veerji, it wasn't your bro's account, one of the mods noticed that you posted in the same thread with two ID's where you started the topic with one ID and replied with another one that related to your original question and she was able to pick this up and reported it to the admin, these are rare cases of 2 siblings having two accounts on the same site, but we do let that slide, if there are any issues with this please open a ticket.

  14. Moths To Light A seeker journeyed to a far village in search of a certain Sufi renowned for his wisdom. At the village he learnt that the Sufi lived on a nearby mountainside. Although darkness was falling, he set off up the mountain towards a bright light, certain it was there he would find the Sufi. When he reached the source of the light he was surprised to find nothing but an oil-lamp with moths fluttering around it. As his eyes grew accustomed to the dark the seeker noticed a dim glow a short way off. Walking over to it, he discovered the Sufi reading by the light of a candle. "Why are you sitting here in the near darkness when there is a much brighter light over there?" asked the seeker. "As you can see", replied the Sufi, "the bright light is for the moths, leaving me here in peace to study by the light of my little candle." Love Vaaheguroo Jee with your heart, no need to run around preaching to large crowds or trying to become famous in any way/shape/form, only the true seekers find vaheguroo and their praise is heard in this world and the next, whereas the rest get left stuck in maya. *********************************************************** Be drunk on Love, for only Love exists; there's No meeting the Beloved without Love as herald. They ask "What is Love?" Reply, "Renouncing the will." He who hasn't tossed will aside doesn't know God. The Lover is a monarch: two worlds lie at his feet; The King pays no attention to what lies under his. It's Love and the Lover that live eternally; Set your heart on this only; the rest is borrowed.
  15. Seva and Simran Not that I know anything, except that i was lucky enough to do seva of a GurSikh who's face glowed. We used to go to the gurdwara together, I always wanted to know about his spiritual experiences, about how to jap naam etc etc. Whenever i had those questions in my mind he used to answer (without me even asking!) 'A Bibi ji used to come to the gurdwara and do seva devotedly one day she came in really exited and enthusiastic, she was telling everyone that she'd been blessed with darshan of Guru Gobind Singh ji. SHE NEVER HAD DARSHAN AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!' So because he wasnt prepared to divulge that knowledge incase of depleting his blessings, I had to do ardas to Guru Granth Sahib for answers and in the end it all boiled down to 'Gian Dhian kich karam na jana, sar na jana teree. Sabh te vada Satguru Nanak Jin kal rakhee meree' Guru Arjun Dev ji Maharaj.Master of spirituality, knower of all techniques, divine teacher of mankind and King of Martyrs says 'I don't know about divine knowledge, meditation, good deeds, I dont know your extent O Lord. (All I know is) Greater than all is SatGuru Nanak who protected me in the age of Darkness'. And then answers come to you at the right time, inside...I guess Guru Granth Sahib jee talks to us direct by putting ideas and thoughts directly in our mind, rather than having to use mouth tongue and words which can be misunderstood. So the GurSikh did me a great favour, he made my link to Guru Granth Sahib jee stronger rather than making my link to him. Plus when 'things' happen it's hard not to talk about, leading to ego, leading to the 'back to square one' syndrome. (which is where i am!). Ask your questions to Guru Granth Sahib ji, be patient, patient, patient for the answer and you'll know inside what's right & what's wrong. Keep one's mouth quiet and ego will stay at bay. What my firend the GurSikh did used to emphasise about a hundred times a day to everyone he talked to was... 'Nimritha & Pyaar' .. Humility and Love for Guru ji, Vaheguru jee, and especially with each other. Go to sadh sangat twice a day, never miss amritvela'. What is seva but to ultimately become humble enough to clean the Sadh Sangats shoes, to wash their dishes, to clean the place where they sit and all for love of Guru ji. And when you've hammered those 2 qualities into your mind set then you'll do simran with humility and love...and then you're going places with Guru ji's kirpa. People point up when they refer to God, but we dont reach God by going high, we reach Vaheguru jee by going down, lower than low, the dust of everyone's feet. Try this next time you do mool mantr: Having said Ik Onkar, imagine your forehead at the 'feet' of Ik Oankar as you say Vaheguru. Having said SatNam, imagine yourself with your forehead at the feet of Satnaam as you say Vaheguru with love and humility and so on for the rest of mool mantr.
