  1. The BBC IPlayer link below: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/console/p00cf3sn/Midlands_Masala_05_12_2010 The discussion starts around 17 minutes. There's an interview with a "gupt" committee member of a Gurdwara which allow meat and alcohol, a Sikh listner's comments and a studio interview with Navreet Singh from Coventry regarding Satkaar issues.
  2. Please raise awareness in the community. Call 0121 380 1050 to speak on air in tonights Sikh Channel LIVE show. Any Committee members who allow parties, alcohol and meat on the Gurdwara properties can call in to explain their "viewpoint". Families who use the Gurdwara facilities for parties distributing sharab etc can also call in to explain their reasoning. See tonights special show as an open forum to get your views through.
  3. The comments above are valid, the press are a double edged sword and we should be cautious. There's a short window of opportunity that the Satkaar campaign has before these sharab promoting Committee are likely to coerce the media into branding the satkaar movement as a bunch of fundamentalists. We already see small signs of this in Des Pardes columns where terms like taliban have been used by one prominent Sikh community leader. We must capitalise on the attention while it's positive and remain whiter than white so that no one can promote any false perception of the intentions of the UK Sangat or this movement. The mainstream media love a "paki" bashing story and they will be waiting for some kind of mini incident to sensationalise. All it takes is for these besharm committees to claim that their congregation’s human right to consume alcohol and meat are at stake and intimidation is used. Sangat must remain strong and transparent so that any false accusations can be easily countered. This movement is likely to be a threat to some of the self-appointed Sikh leaders and just like they did during the R4G campaign they may abuse their influence with the authorities and media to make the movement look dangerous.
  4. Agree 100%. There's no point burying our heads in the sand (like we normally do) and ignoring what's being said about us. We need to engage with the mainstream media if they decide to pick on a Sikh story. Yes, it's an internal issue, but ironically the Sikh media (except for some footage on Sikh Channel) haven't been interested in picking it up. So along come the non-Sikh media like BBC and Sunrise TV who have run news stories on the issue. I see it as a wake up call to the Sikh media to stop crawling up prabhandaks bottoms and to step up their real time news reporting of Sikh issues.
  5. Already on bbc iplayer... http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/console/b00wbkwk/Nihal_30_11_2010
  6. Interviewed some Committee guy from Sunderland Sikh Association who run a Gurdwara and party hall.
  7. Ok. Honestly speaking radio presenter Nihal presented it pretty well. Tigerstyle - Pops came and spoke as well as Navreet Singh of Guru Hargobind Sahib Gurdwara Coventry. BBC Asian Network also mentioned the satkaar movement against party halls on the 2pm news. Can someone upload from Iplayer when it becomes available tommorrow??
  8. Live show now on. Please call and participate.
  9. LIVE on BBC Asian Network on Nihal's programme right now. Discussion about meat, alcohol and parties in Gurdwaras.. ------------------------------- UPDATED link below to bbc iplayer recording of LIVE show... http://www.bbc.co.uk...ihal_30_11_2010
  10. Depends what gets Compromised and how much middle ground gets created for Compromise. Someone above mentioned Gurmat, in most cases we cannot compromise on Gurmat principles and concerns that this council is already compromising by allowing committees who abuse the golak to take a lead. I see this Council as nothing more than a re-brand of what already exists out there at the moment, same item different packaging with almost predictable personalities pushing themselves forward and being selected to lead it. These personalities are highly unlikely to sit on the backbench and let fresh thinkers take the lead. So all we will end up with is the same personalities that stifled any progression in the last 20 years, but this time they will be under one committee. Just like the Gurdwara Prabhandak committee structure, putting a token youth or woman in there just to show equality will not change anything. The strings are always pulled by the same people. From my own experiences unless you have a majority of like minded innovative principled Gursikhs leading, one or two strong candidates will struggle to make any valuable changes. Sikhs have lost the scope for personal development, we have not shaped our youth or women into leaders because the elders have not been willing to give up their authority. Not only do we have a generation gap, but a cultural gap, a gender gap and an educational gap in our leadership. Unless they are willing to now step down and promote new personalities forward I fail to see what this Council will provide but a repeat of the last 20 years.
  11. Sunday is a good time to contact the committee as they are likely to be in the Gurdwara complex. Also letters from the Gurdwaras (even outside the UK) will also have massive impact. The Committee are very open about what goes on in the Hall, which probably stems from the fact that they have remained unchallenged by the local sangat for the last 15 years or so.
  12. Has the pardaan given a formal response? Also who are the monay sharabis who have been threatening people in the Gurdwara. Please put up some more info so that the UK Sangat can act on it. This is smethwick not grays or edinburgh. If a uk sangat meeting is required logistically it can take place much quicker.
  13. Whatever the "label" of a Committee or Sangat members who serve in a Gurdwara, sharda has no caste neither does beadbi. The nishan sahib has no caste, nor does the pavitar saroop of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. The wrongful practice of promoting a party hall in a Gurdwara property serving alcohol, meat and allowing people to smoke under the banner of Baba Jassa Singh Ramgharia is morally offensive to our puratan forefathers and unacceptable. Just because someone has divided the Panth many many years ago, does not mean it still has to be accepted. If we cloud this with “caste bashing” comments then all we will do is intensify the smokescreen of individual prejudices which will carry on masking this beadbi, like it has for many years. This is a Sangat issue, just like Grays was, just like Edinburgh was. And it needs addressing by each and every person that labels themselves as a Sikh of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. There's no them or us in this. We all need to see that we are part of the same Sikh spirtual gene pool and if one of our own brothers is slipping then we need to help him back up again. It's time to intensify dailogue with all the Gurdwara Committees or Sangat members who have allowed themselves to slip into promoting the manmat of alcohol fueled parties in Gurdwaras. If that fails then the only option is a peaceful protest outside the hall to raise awareness.
  14. southamptonsingh/tikka, Welcome to the forum. From my experiences on this forum, there is little benefit in debating this issue, no matter how articulate we think we are. Not only it will be clouded by a smokescreen of individual prejudices people seem to have developed over the years against each other but Akal Takht Sahib has made the dharmic policy decision for the entire Sikh nation. It is there in black and white, the specific edict (Sandesh issued April 2006) from Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib’s pavitar astaan has been posted above on this thread. Pyara has suggested a forward looking approach. If, as the sangat members from Southampton are claiming this does not happen at Southampton Gurdwara, then the Gurdwara committee can simply go on record and categorically say they always endorse Akal Takht Sahib marayda and meat is never be served on any of the properties of the Gurdwara. This will close the open issue and I am sure the videos could also be requested to be taken down.
  15. As the subject has now been brought up, the Sikh residents of Birmingham will be well aware of the Jassa Singh Ramgharia Hall around the corner from the main Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in the city centre. I suppose rather than needing pictures, just call the Gurdwara on 0121 236 5435. Ask for a booking for a party in the Hall and ask them if meat, alcohol is allowed. You'll get your proof, the committee don't hide the fact that they allow all these anti Sikh activities on their property named after a mahan Gursikh panthic icon like dhan dhan Baba Jassa Singh Ramgharia. It's hypocrisy at it's worst and certainly needs addressing. Maybe its time for UK sangat to focus on taking this one forward. Don't drag this one out by asking for "proof" etc, it's open knowledge. Ask anyone in Bham or visit the Hall on a Friday, Saturday and Sunday evening when a party is going on. These activities at Ramgharia Gurdwara, Graham St, Birmingham do need addressing, partcularly as the committee project themselves forward on many panth related situations on the Sikh Channel.
  16. What a shame that the members of committee feel they can simply lie to the UK Sangat by fobbing people off the phone. When I spoke to someone at the Gurdwara telephone number this morning I was told that the hall allows parties, meat and sharab but is "not" part of the Gurdwara because the door is now sealed off. He did admit it was built from the Guru's golak. When I spoke to Mr Landa (the pardaan)on his mobile 10 minutes later, he said that the hall next door does not serve meat and sharab and it's all a rumour created by people who have it in for the committee. He stated that the committee abide by Akal Takht Hukumnama. I said if that's the case please release a letter on your Gurdwara official document stating this and that you disapprove of party halls in Gurdwaras. He didn't respond and then cut me off. He's not picking his mobile phone up now. The Scottish Sangat have already questioned what the Committee do and the Committee simply ignore and carry on. That's why it's escalated to this level.
  17. Contact details below. Guru Nanak Gurdwara - Edninburgh 1 Sheriff Brae Leith, Edinburgh EH6 6TJ 0131 533 7207 http://www.edinburghsikhs.com/
  18. There are many aspects of Hazoor Sahib maryada that do not seem to be in line with the maryada instructed by Akaal Takht Sahib (who are still the recognised supreme seat of Sikh religious policies). As per the Rehit Maryada issued by Akaal Takht Sahib within the Gurdwara, the Guru ka Langar (Guru's community kitchen) serves purely lacto-vegetarian food. Hazoor Sahib and some other Gurdwaras do operate their own maryada. However, it is not for us to argue against what the consensus of GurSikhs instruct from Akaal Takht Sahib even though another Takht or Gurdwara decides to follow their own maryada.
  19. It still looks like no official communication has yet been sent out from the committee to either the Sikh media, local Grays media or UK sangat. 12 days left for a response from the committee of Grays Gurdwara.
  20. Great to see an articulate tyar bar tyar Singh on national TV. Breaks all the stereotypes.
  21. A benti to the organisers. After all the mahan sewa of organising the Akal Ustat Jaap, please please do not allow the neglect of the Guru Ka langar by sanctioning a notorious local fast food kebab shop like Rockys of Southall to prepare the langar. As our great mahapursh’s have shown us the langar sewa is always taken on by the “sangat roop” and not a caterer or for the promotion of an entity, there’s plenty of tyar bar tyar Singh/Singniya who will attend this jaap and I’m sure between all of you the langar sewa could be carried out.
  22. I wish to raise a concern about the credibility of one of the winners. I believe the narrative made on the Sikh awards website about that specific winner maybe doubtful and question the legitimacy of a particular achievement highlighted on the Sikh awards website relating to this individual which would have "influenced" the judges’ decision. Also concerns about the professional conduct of this "Sikh" awards nominee/winner have been raised in the past by some members of the community. Can SEWDAR5 explain the due diligence carried out in checking whether a certain claimed "accomplishment" actually took place and the professional history, background and professional qualifications declared by these "Sikh" award nominees/winners?
  23. That is a valid point. The video was taken in 2006. When speaking to a couple of local Sikhs, they said that as far as they are aware the English breakfast is still served at this Gurdwara on Sundays, however, they were not willing to go to the Gurdwara to confirm this as it's "not their Gurdwara". Some UK prabhandaks were approached about this but did not seem interested in taking this further and brushed it off with a generalised claim that this "caste" of people serve meat in their Gurdwara's everywhere. Letters were also sent out to various big Gurdwaras and again no interest was received. Until the sangat see equality in all Guru Ghars and that a beadbi in a specific Guru Ghar is a beadbi full stop regardless of us all hiding behind caste labels, nothing will change. Firstly, we need feedback from the committee of this Gurdwara to know whether this anti Sikh practice still carries on and if so, what actions will be taken to adhere to Akal Takht Sandesh 2006. Please don't get into a false sense of security that this issue is being dealt with because I can tell you from being one of the guys involved in Grays movement that besides a video going up on YouTube, no actions regarding the Southampton Gurdwara meat issue have been taken. This now really needs to be escalated by the UK Sangat.
  24. Waheguru. Parnaam Shaheeda Nu. Please attend all Gurdwara programmes taking place this weekend and week regarding the kurbaniya of the Delhi Sikhs in 1984.
  25. Please find below a letter from the Prabhandak Committee and Sangat of Gurdwara Singh Sabha London East to the committee of Grays Gurdwara in relation to the proposed sacrilege to take place on the Grays Gurdwara complex
