Inspired by the help people in distant Dehradun provided when his then three-year-old son met with an accident in 1996, Kanwaljeet Singh and his wife Manjeet Kaur decided to do something unique to serve society. Thus was born the hospital service that is now the talk of Jaipur. It is already eight years old now, and Kanwaljeet Singh, a 48-year-old bank executive, is widely known here as the "van wale Sardarji" (the Sikh with a van). "Sometimes people don't have the means to take their relatives to hospital. To fulfill this requirement, I started this ambulance service," says Singh, who works for a state-run bank here. It is a 24-hour service and is run from their modest middle class home. When Singh is at work, Manjeet Kaur, in her 40s, drives the ambulance. "The blessings we receive from patients motivate us to keep running the service," Kaur told IANS. The Maruti van now converted into an ambulance was first put to use when Singh's father had cancer and had to be repeatedly taken to hospital. The ambulance's facilities include a wheel chair, crutches, walking stick and a toilet chair. If someone needs any of these articles, they too are provided free of charge. The people return them after use. "These things are expensive and not everyone can afford them. So we lend them for free." Singh popularises his free hospital service through pamphlets in temples and Sikh shrines. Even police stations have them. One patient borrowed the wheel chair for a Haj pilgrimage! "On usual days, there are about four calls for the ambulance," said Singh. "The people availing our service are from all classes of society and belong to all religions. I intend to carry on with the service all my life," he said. The hospital service is not only the social work Singh and Kaur are engaged in. Kaur teaches Punjabi language in gurdwaras during summer vacations - also for free. The couple has constructed an old age home in the city that has a library. Naturally, Jaipur residents shower their blessings on Singh and Kaur. "My pregnant wife one night suddenly developed serious pain some four years back," recalled Jagdeep Singh, a shopkeeper and one of the many who has benefited from the service. "I called up Sardarji and he came with his van immediately and took my wife to the hospital. He is like a god to me." Ramesh Chand, another resident, said he had a tough time getting an ambulance from any of the hospitals when his daughter fell from the stairs of their house and fractured her leg. "Then a friend called Singh and he rushed with his ambulance. He did not charge any money. I don't know how to say thanks to them. It is very difficult to see people like them." First of all, let us find out why Indian boys/ girls are running blindly towards western fashion and cutting their hairs, wearing western clothes, boys wearing caps & even ear rings, nose rings, boys doing ponny tails etc. The major culprit is MEDIA which is the easiest, cheapest mean of entertainment in India. In India, there are 4-5 Hindu religion channels, some muslium channels but we are not having even a single pure quality & well recognised , easily accessable SIKHI channel which can telecast educative & parchar programmes apart from kirtan/ katha programmes. I think a parchar desk where Parcharak (male & females sewadaars) educate / inspire Youth in an impressive, modern and gurbani based education in historical or central gurudwara sahib. Show them a compraitive slide show or short movie in a stipulated room or confernece room. There is no moderen techniques used in Sikhi Schools for educating / inspiring youth towards their religion. I asked some friends from Punjab that why sikh youth is cutting their hairs etc. and the main reason they said is Movies / T V which is majorily inspiring / encouraging youngsters for that awful sin. One thing I have observed that when a youngster cut his hairs and come back to family or friend or social circle there is no difference visible on family/ friends or social circle, its seems for them there is not much difference for them in having a Keshdhari or non keshdhari family member/ friend etc. This result in that youngster find it absolutely ok and justify his or her decision. I think the family or friends or socially these youngsters need to be motivated to come back to Sikhi. I think We need to realize them the pain we have bcoz of his or her awful acts and should continously motivated / encourage them to come back to Sikhi Saroop.
