  1. you're still on methadone. i know how powerful it is, you are NOT sober when you're on it. i'm sorry to be blunt, but you cannot be blessed with amrit until you're 100% sober. and there is no way you should be wandering around with Guru ji's Kirpan when you're basically high. please don't brush me off with that know it all attitude. trust me i'm a lot older than you and i've been through hell myself. look at it this way, you yourself said you don't even know how to talk to someone at the gurdwara about amrit sanchar scheduling... how can you wear Guru ji's Kirpan if you haven't even got the basics? what about your gurdwara in victoria? can't your sangat help you? do you go to a gurdwara? listen. right now, focus on your amritvela. do your panj bani nitnem every morning. since you don't work, do sukhmani sahib instead of playing x-box. do naam jaap, all the time. do rehras in the evening and sohila at night. sikhi is NOT just a kirpan and a kara! you need to be ready, and that means not doing bujjar kurehets! until you are 100% sober you should not, you must not, go for amrit. again, i'm sorry if i sound harsh, but you're showing a lot of attitude about this. you came here looking for help, but you seem to have all the answers already. i know it's hard to be a convert. trust me. but you have to work for it. amrit isn't like christian baptism. we shouldn't even use that word. christians can go for baptism and start sinning again the next day. but if you slip with your recovery, even once, you will become patit. to me, turning your back on Guru ji is worse than being dead. you need to be CLEAN 100% or you are insulting the very institution of amrit sanchar. look at it this way... if someone went to an amrit sanchar on alcohol, even a little bit, they would throw him out so fast... or maybe he used to smoke a pack a day, but now he only smokes one or two. it doesn't matter, because he's still smoking! it's the same thing with methadone. once again, i'm sorry for my blunt speech, but it sounds like you need to hear.
  2. that's not how i understand it. sehajdhari means "slow adopter", but it implies by name that the person is "adopting" sikhi. meaning they're trying to follow rehet. meaning they have (or are at least growing) kes! one who does not obey guru ji and does not care for rehet simply isn't a sikh. there's no fancy name for them. maybe "punjabi". one who is trying and is working towards amrit (the true beginning of life as a sikh), would be sehajdhari. technically, the definition of sikh = amritdhari, period. but i guess SGPC needs their thuggs on staff and can't limit themselves too much.

  4. this is how i do it too... but i throw in whatever leftover raw vegies i have around. also, i mix toor daal with peeli daal for different texture) containing daal, rice, and vegies, kichri is a perfectly nutritionally balanced meal. you could eat it every day of your life. in fact, some people do. i've even seen a study that kichri helps cancer patients. He's Mute... Hopefully, He's Given Human Body Next Birth...And I Hope He Will Make A GOOD Use Of It... i believe this is true. i think that dogs (pet dogs, i mean) are the last step before human birth. they're the most perfect companion. they don't ever get mad at you, they always forgive you, they are always loving and loyal... somehow i know my dog will be a Sikh next birth.
  5. i was taught "maha mantar" instead of "madh mantar", and japji sahib in whole is "mala mantar". so many different ideas...
  6. i finally found out what he did wrong. he beat his wife. more than once. still, cutting his kes is never appropriate punishment. the jail authorities just don't understand the significance or they could never do it. but just for everyone wondering what this poor guy is doing in jail... now you know.
  7. it is an EXTREMELY strong opioid drug, but it's easier to regulate than heroin, so they give it to heroin addicts to help ease the pain of detox. they very slowly step down in dose on the methadone until, theoretically, they stop using. methadone treatment is controversial because many people wind up addicted to the methadone itself. it's a very difficult path to follow and i recommend our poster do the best he can to get off it as soon as possible. do as much naam simran and read sukhmani sahib paath every day. i've been through a lot in my life too, and i can sympathize with you in a lot of ways. but let me tell you that naam jaap is the BEST high there is, hands down. and i strongly believe that it WILL cure you of anything (even heroin addiction).
  8. sorry, i can't help with the mom problem. but please don't go around wearing a kirpan until or unless you are blessed with Amrit... i know it's a trend to wear the kirpan before amrit, but i think it's disrespectful. the kirpan requires a LOT of responsibility to carry. someone who carries it is ALWAYS representing the entire sikh community. i'm not trying to be harsh or restrictive, it just worries me. i've seen a few young people locally who are obviously breaking rehat in so many different ways who also wear kirpan. stick to the kara and practicing tying that turban!

  10. no, rakhri is not a festival of Sikhs, it was a hindu tradition even before our Guru ji's time. here's how i see it. when a woman ties rakhri on her brother's wrist, she is asking for his protection. this implies that she is not able to protect herself. it's degrading to women. Guru ji taught that we are the equals of men and do not need their protection. if a girl feels like she needs her brother's protection, she can go for it, but if she is Khalsa, she should be able to protect herself. if you like the bonding between sister and brother, why not give a gutka or a kadha, maybe a nice kirpan. give something compatible with sikhi instead. the idea of brother/sister bonding is wonderful, but it's not necessary to degrade women in the process. and before the singhs jump in, yes, i'm a feminist. deal with it. Guru ji gave us a dastaar and kirpan for a reason, and it's not so we can hide behind any man! :gatka-singhni: :D
  11. i apologize veerji for the sarcasm. it was unnecessary. and i apoligize in advance for disagreeing with you. however, first, AKJ, Taksal, and nihungs do not make up the majority of Sikhs! i'm sorry, but i simply don't know where you're getting this idea. i'm very sorry to disagree, but respectfully, i believe that you may not be aware of Sikhi in the rest of the world. again, i'm very sorry to say that and i mean no disrespect. second, Baba ji did NOT go against the panthic rehat maryada when he held back the crowd for krishna kaur. the SRM says NOTHING about women being disallowed from kirtan. it says "only a SIKH may perform kirtan in congregation". THE CODE OF SIKH CONDUCT AND CONVENTIONS CHAPTER V Kirtan (Devotional Hymns Singing by a Group or an Indvidual) Article VI <a name="article6"> a) Only a Sikh may perform Kirtan in a congregation. b) Kirtan means singing the scriptural compositions in traditional musical measures. c) In the congragation, Kirtan only of Gurbani (Guru Granth's or Guru Gobind Singh's hymns) and, for its elaboration, of the compositions of Bhai Gurdas and Bhai Nand Lal, may be performed. d) It is improper, while singing hymns to rhythmic folk tunes or to traditional musical measures, or in team singing, to induct into them improvised and extraneous refrains. Only a line from the hymn should be made a refrain. in 2005, SGPC has even specifically said that women may do kirtan in any gurdwara, INCLUDING DARBAR SAHIB, pending (then) jathedar vedanti's approval. unfortunately, he was unwilling to go against the traditional banning of women that was started by the mahants and continues today. this also applies to palki sahib seva and amrit sanchar seva, both of which are ALLOWED by the rehat maryada, but banned at akal takht and darbar sahib. this is my biggest gripe with akal takht today. i'm still trying to find a suitible form of protest of these stupid gender-biased rules.
  12. yes , it's in every rehat maryada. it's also mentioned in the grand father of all maryadas (and my personal gold standard), the 52 hukams of Guru Gobind Singh ji. Exactly. Inter-racial marriage between GurSikhs can be better than marriage between 2 Punjabi GurSikhs. It all depends on the individuals in the end. even manmukhs like me can make an inter-racial marriage work with a gursikh husband (i'm so blessed :D ).
  13. The Guru roop khalsa panth already did. They took away Akaal Takht Sahib from them. As for now, not all udasi are fallen from sikhi, many follow it. others have mixed stuff. So we can't judge the group as a whole. And besides that, I think the panth as an entire group has fallen away from the Guru's teachings, we can see this from looking at the state of Sikhi in punjab. What right do they have to punish anyone? that's true. i can respect that.

  16. guru ji says, ape bij ape hi khahu- you will harvest what you plant. so yes, i think that means we will get bad if we give bad. but where and when and how, all that is up to Waheguru. and sometimes, bad things happen for good reason. we may not understand it, but the will of Waheguru is always sweet, even if it feels bad at the time. Sukh dukh dono sam kari jaanai aour maanu apamaanaa. Harakh sog te rahai ateetaa tini jagi tatu pashaanaa. Usatat nindaa do-oo tiaagai khojai padu nirabaanaa. Jan Nanak ihu khel kathan hai kinahoon gurmukhi jaanaa One who knows that pain and pleasure are both the same, and honor and dishonor as well; who remains detached from joy and sorrow, realizes the true essence in the world. Renounce both praise and blame; seek instead the state of Nirvaanaa. O servant Nanak, this is such a difficult game; only a few Gurmukhs (who have become Spiritual beings) understand it! (SGGS ji - 218).
  17. it's rare for guys to convert to their wife's religion- usually it's the other way around, i think. but if they want to go for amrit then it would be fine to marry them, as they wouldn't be muslim or hindu (or whatever), but would now be sikh. waheguru works in strange ways, i guess.
  18. interracial and interreligious are two completely different things. no, it is not wrong to marry across races, colours, caste, or social status. sikhi does not divide us in this way. however, a sikh should marry a sikh for several reasons, most important thing is that Guru ji has said this. besides, what if you marry a hindu and they want to do mundan on your children? or you marry a muslim and they want to circumsise your children. what will you do?
  19. i would like to add that i have the highest respect for Baba Nihal Singh ji. and to my knowledge, he has never criticized or gone against SRM. however, if i'm wrong, please feel free to let me know. in fact, to my knowledge, none of the great mahapurakh have gone against SRM. even Sant Jarnail Singh ji Bhindranwale said in his speeches to take amrit from anyone, don't worry about these divisions in the panth. the most important thin is Amrivela, at least panj bania nitnem, don't eat meat and don't do bujjar kurehets. this is common across the majority of sampardae, and it's the same as SRM. so i don't see why you guys have to keep trashing the panthic rehat maryada.
  20. massands had permission from Guru Arjan Sahib to live their lifestyle too, but when they fell from sikhi, Guru Gobind Singh ji punished them severely. why doesn't Guru Panth do anthing about falle udassi i wonder?

  22. waheguru! i also give my dog kichri when she's sick. i'm happy to see other sikhs who can see god in animals as well... most of my punjabi friends are afraid of dogs, or think them too dirty to live indoors. to that i say, sabh gobind hai, sabh gobind hai, gobind bin nahee ko-ee! thanks for sharing this veerji!
  23. veerjeeoo, I don't think that's true in its entirety because bhaee saaheb bhaee randheer singh jee also wore black dastaar, although I remember that did happen in several of the morche we all derive different ideas from different things in sikhee doesn't mean we're right or wrong its just how we look at it........... it started in the 1920s after the british raj murdered those pilgrams at Nankana Sahib. since then it has been used in several protests, including jallianwala bagh, amritsar massacre, and throughout the '80s.
  24. agreed. but we should add that no other group considers keski as kakkar... though they may require it in their maryada. so that's not just a break with SRM, it's break from all the other major maryada (please do correct me if i'm wrong).
