  1. In front of the greatest King of all nothing is too much to ask. Even if you cannot get to Guru Sahib in person they are 'Ghat Ghat ke Antar ki Jaanat', in each and every hirda. If one pains to see Guru Ji in person or Sangat with a true heart Maharaj will for sure oblige. At least you have the desire to visit Guru Sahib. Nothing can replace being in the presence of Guru Ji and in Sangat. 'Bin Bhagaan Sat Sang na labhe, Bin Satgur Maael Bhareeje Jio'

  4. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-india-26252797 The government in India's Tamil Nadu state has decided to free seven people convicted of plotting the assassination of former PM Rajiv Gandhi. All seven were members of the Sri Lankan Tamil Tiger rebel group. Gandhi's murder in May 1991 was seen as retaliation for his having sent Indian peacekeepers to Sri Lanka in 1987. The announcement came a day after the Supreme Court commuted the death sentences of three convicts, citing delays in deciding their mercy pleas. The decision to free the prisoners was taken on Wednesday morning at a cabinet meeting, chaired by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalitha. Ms Jayalalitha told the state assembly later that the government would send the cabinet decision to the federal government for approval. "If there is no reply within three days from the centre, the state government will release all the seven... in accordance with the powers vested with the state government," she said. Among the prisoners to be released are the three men whose death sentences were commuted on Tuesday by the Supreme Court - Murugan, Santhan and Perarivalan. They have been in jail for more than 20 years and had been on death row since 1998. The court ruled that they should be spared the death sentence as it was inhumane to keep them for so long under the threat of execution. Nalini Sriharan, an Indian Tamil woman, was also given the death penalty by the trial court in 1998, but the Supreme Court commuted this to life imprisonment the following year. Three other convicts - Robert Pious, Jayakumar and Ravichandran - who are serving life sentences for involvement in the assassination would also be among those freed, authorities said. Rajiv Gandhi was killed by a female suicide bomber at an election rally in Tamil Nadu. A BBC correspondent in Delhi says the Gandhi family is unlikely to oppose the move to free the prisoners. Nalini's death sentence was changed into a life term, following a plea for clemency by Rajiv Gandhi's widow and Congress party president, Sonia Gandhi. Mrs Gandhi had appealed on Nalini's behalf because she had a young child. In 2008, Gandhi's daughter Priyanka Gandhi met Nalini in jail. "I needed to make peace with all the violence in my life," she later said. "I don't believe in anger or violence and I refuse to let it overpower me. Meeting Nalini was my way of coming to terms with my father's death," Ms Gandhi said
  5. They are good for siphoning funds for bigger wedding halls and lavish white elephants. In most cases youth are not even on their radar. Even some of the youth in committees become assimilated like the Borg (Trekkies will understand :wink2: ) over time and end up toeing the line. Rather than grapple for resources, the Youth should crowd fund opening simple and small places of worship (like the old Havelock Road Gurdwara in Southall) where the anand felt was out of this world. Committe if required to be selected and not elected by the sangat and only run by Gursikhs.
  6. Controversial Dera Sauda Sirsa chief charged with rape and murder claims he is ‘incapable’ of having sex By GURTEJ SINGH Published: February 14, 2014 Panchkula (February 14, 2014): It is learnt that controversial self-styled godman and Dera Sauda Sirsa head Gurmeet Ram Rahim Insan, who is facing rape and murder charges, has told Panchkula court that he is not mentally and physically fit to have sexual intercourse. According to a ‘Mail Online India’ news dated: 12 Feb, S.K. Garg Narwana, counsel for Gurmeet Ram Rahim, told mediapersons: “Dera chief told the court that he was not fit to indulge in physical relationships”. Gurmeet Ram Rahim (Dera Sauda Sirsa) [File Photo] Controversial dera chief, who recorded his statement under section 313 of IPC through video conferencing, on Tuesday contended that the allegations levelled him were false and baseless. A Sadhvi had in 2002 written an anonymous letter addressed to the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, accusing the Dera chief of sexual abuse. The Punjab and Haryana High Court took up the matter and ordered a CBI probe into the incident on September 24, 2002. Gurmeet Ram Rahim is also facing two murder charges. He is accused of murdering a Sirsa-based journalist, Ram Chander Chatrapati, who had been writing about the Dera’s activities. Chatrapati was shot on October 24, 2001 and died on November 21. He was also accused of killing sect manager Ranjit Singh in July 2002. According to CBI counsel HPS Verma, Dera head has made more than 100 video conference appearances but not a single physical appearance in court, which is mandatory under Section 313 of the Criminal Procedure Code. Dera head had on September 16, 2013 filed a plea in the court alleged that he was facing threats to his life. Controversial dera chief’s blasphemous activities against the Sikh Gurus had irked Sikhs in 2007, following which an edict was issued by Akal Takht asking Sikhs to boycott the sect activities at all levels.
  7. Depends on ones state of mind. If he ended up being overtly impacted by the winnings and he became emotionally attached to winning money, then it is for sure a negative. Although listening to their talks when I was at Uni, I'm pretty confident they wont end up as a social wreck. Even on the show, Singh Ji did not look too disturbed when he had a choice of taking £500 or £250,000. Moreover they did not spend money to make money.. Always go by merit; the gambler leaves with both hands empty (Kabir, Sri Guru Granth Sahib, p 1158 ).

  10. By Sanjeev Miglani NEW DELHI (Reuters) - India's opposition criticized ruling party leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday for avoiding any expression of regret for the killings of Sikhs in riots three decades ago, a sensitive issue that threatens to dog him in a tight election due by May. Gandhi said the government led by his Congress party did everything it could to control the violence against minority Sikhs in retaliation for the assassination of his grandmother, then prime minister Indira Gandhi, by her Sikh bodyguards in 1984. Nearly 3,000 people were killed in the riots and rights activists accuse the Congress of having turned a blind eye and say some of its leaders helped orchestrate the violence. "It is tragic that so many died but there is no tribute, no remorse, no apology," said Prakash Singh Badal, the chief minister of Sikh-dominated Punjab state whose party is a member of the main opposition alliance. Gandhi in a rare interview broadcast on Monday night said the riots were horrible and that some members of the Congress party may have been involved. But they had been punished and the government had, at the time, tried to stop the attacks. He said he had nothing to do with the violence when asked if he would apologize or at least express regret."I think that riots, as all riots, were a horrible event. Frankly I was not in operation in the Congress party," said Gandhi, the fourth generation member of the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty.Instead, he targeted the opposition's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, accusing his administration in the western state of Gujarat of abetting attacks against Muslims there in another series of riots in 2002. But Modi's Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), rejected the accusation and said Gandhi was wrong to draw a comparison between the two incidents. "Congress leaders were seen leading the mobs," senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley said of the 1984 violence. "Sikhs were massacred at thousands of places. Nowhere did the police fire a single bullet to disperse mobs. Cases were not investigated." "Where did Rahul Gandhi get this idea that in 1984 there was no participation of the state?" Sikhs make up about 2 percent of Hindu-majority India's population of 1.2 billion. Indira Gandhi's assassination, in October 1984, was carried out in revenge for her decision to send the army in to flush Sikh separatist militants out of the Golden Temple - Sikhism's holiest shrine - in the northern city of Amritsar in June that year. As for the original post, I also like listening to Jagpal Singh Ji. I'm not a massive fan of 'dhuni' but by the same token I can happily listen to AKJ kirtan This one is pretty cool!

  13. Ideally not the best place to ask this question, and I'm not sure it will be up here for long but here goes. I'm after a trustworthy all round builder/handyman preferably a Singh in the West London area. I don't mind if they are 'faujis' as long as the work is up to scratch. Finding someone reliable is not proving easy for me and I'd rather have non smokers in the house and someone that completes a full days work. If someone can please PM me their details that will be great.

  16. Sikh rights group backs US move to prosecute Indian diplomat December 30, 2013 Special Correspondent For news details visit : http://www.nation.com.pk/international/30-Dec-2013/sikh-rights-group-backs-us-move-to-prosecute-indian-diplomat For news details Read on : Sikh rights group backs US move to prosecute Indian diplomat NEW YORK - Amid continuing Delhi-Washington standoff over the arrest of a female Indian diplomat, a New York-based Sikh advocacy group on Sunday came out in support of the US move to prosecute her on charges of visa fraud and underpaying her maid. Devyani Khobragade, 39, India's deputy consul general, who was handcuffed and strip-searched while in detention, has denied the charges and in turn accused her maid, Sangeeta Richard, of theft and attempted blackmail. “Ms Khobragade should be tried in the US Court as, we are in a country where law of land is supreme and immunity to anyone based on their official position is unacceptable”, Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, the legal advisor to the group, "Sikhs for Justice, said in a statement. In calling for the Indian diplomat’s prosecution, Pannun welcomed the 2013 report of the UN Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions, Christof Heyns, which says that impunity represents a major challenge in India. Heyns, who visited India in 2012, presented the report to UN Human Rights Council (UN HRC), recommending ‘a series of legal reforms and policy measures aimed at fighting impunity and decreasing the level of unlawful killings in India”. In his statement, Pannun said that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who continues to provide impunity in India to its cabinet members like Kamal Nath and other leaders for their alleged involvement in November 1984 anti-Sikh riots, was now demanding immunity for Khobragade from US government. India has demanded an apology from the US over the diplomat's alleged "humiliation". Khobragade has since been posted to India's Mission to the United Nations in New York in a move to give her full diplomatic immunity from prosecution. American officials so far insist that whatever immunity Ms Khobragade earns from the switch will not be retroactive. “Receiving diplomatic immunity does not nullify any previously existing criminal charges,” said Jen Psaki, the State Department spokeswoman. “Those remain on the books.” Meanwhile, India is checking the tax status of Americans working at schools in the country, after the arrest this month of an Indian diplomat in New York, according to US media reports. In a dispatch from New Delhi, The New York Times said Indian Foreign Service officials are not letting the matter drop even though politicians have stopped denouncing the United States for the arrest and humiliation of Ms Khobragade. "The continued hard feelings suggest that the dispute could have a long-term impact on a relationship both sides say is crucial," the report said. India would no longer turn a blind eye to tax violations by diplomats' spouses taking up work in the country, an unnamed official was quoted as saying in media reports. New Delhi has also withdrawn some privileges enjoyed by American diplomats and their families in the country, added the official. "Spouses and children have no more immunity. So if there is a parking offence or something else happening in Bangalore etcetera, they would be held liable." India has also canceled the United States Embassy’s import privileges for food and alcohol, according to The New York Times. And security barriers that surrounded the embassy in New Delhi have been permanently removed. Indian officials say the barriers were unnecessary and in some cases impeded traffic. “We would not do anything to adversely affect the security of the US Embassy,” the Indian External Affairs Ministry spokesman was quoted as saying. “To suggest otherwise is unfair.” There are 14 other Indian maids working for Indian diplomats in the United States, and India is negotiating over their status with the State Department, it said. To India, these maids should be considered Indian government employees whose employment does not fall under American wage and hour laws. The US embassy declined to comment on the latest steps. The New York Times dispatch said, "A little-noticed aspect of the uproar has been India’s unhappiness with American officials of Indian descent. The federal prosecutor on the case, Preet Bharara, is of Indian descent, as are many officials on the South Asia desk of the United States State Department. "India has a fraught relationship with members of its own diaspora. Commercials and Bollywood films often treat such people with mild contempt, and in the Khobragade case, Indian officials have said they believe that their counterparts in the United States treated India poorly in an excessive show of loyalty to the United States. "American officials quietly say they bent over backward to heal bruised feelings. On Dec. 19, Secretary of State John Kerry tried to get in touch with the Indian foreign secretary, Salman Khurshid, but Khurshid did not take his call for reasons he has not explained. So Kerry called Shivshankar Menon, the Indian national security adviser, to express his “regret” over the matter. "While US Secretary of State John Kerry has expressed his "regret" over Ms Khobragade's arrest, the state department has said it will not drop charges, as requested by India." The Times said, "Ms. Khobragade could leave the United States for India, never return and never face another day in court, but that seems unlikely because her husband, a professor of philosophy, was raised in the United States and has family there."

  19. Too many to post and not many available online. I have some wicked ones on cassette and mini disc. Giani Amolak Singh before every shabad had amazing simran and Bhai Jagdeep Singh from Clifton Rd, Southall clocks it as well. I always found Bhai Jasbir Singh had a soothing voice. I only had the chance to listen to them live on a couple of occasions.
  20. Guru Piari Sadh Sangat Jio, Humble Benti to everyone, please lets all support Jagraj Singh Ji. How they have collectively managed to only spend £30K with the amount of work gone into the site and parchar in man hours is nothing short of a miracle. Spread the 'Word' to friends and families. Maybe forego the latest gadget, annual subscription or opt for a cheaper holiday and help this much needed charity flourish, accomplish it's aims and beat its funding target in 2014.
  21. How did Dhumma give sehjog to Gurbaksh Singh prior to just coming out of his shell? As Gurbaksh Singh states the Jathedhars will be held accountable for releasing the remainder of the Singhs in jail. By placing the onus on them and in front of the media is a master-stroke. By not keeping their promises will result in their downfall. Badal will be out no matter what the outcome and Gurbaksh Singh should stand as Jathedar of Akal Takht Sahib or replace the kanjar Badal. If only the elections were around the corner they would win hands down.
