  1. Where to start The difference between now and then was that girls in particular were taught values of being responsible, caring, respectful, household duties and nurturing in extended families. The degradation of social structure in our families due to Western influence and upbringing and liberal tendencies has not helped one iota. The root cause in IMO is lack of control and regulation through a firm hand and for women independence through full time work, therefore less reliance on breadwinner. Even the bandhay have become pansies and there is a crossover of defined roles in the home, certainly does not help. In the past great stress was placed on discipline and even an element of fear from a young age, this is disappearing fast, I know members in my family who would be reluctant to or never give a thapar for non compliance, back in the day but far less now now, a good thrashing hanging over ones head, meant compliance was a given. This is viewed as child abuse and the barmy laws see it as violence against kids which is why in the UK, we have children controlling classrooms, teachers can all but stand and watch, juveniles hanging on street corners drinking cider, repeat crime levels though the roof etc etc. Even gorey had a hold on the kids before the 80s, now its a free for all. Working all hours of the day and leaving children in the care of nanny's usually of another faith is another bug bear of mine. What can they possibly instil in our children. No shared values, no idea of honour, Sikhi, reverence of bazurags. Divorce should be an absolute last resort, most things can be worked out, when all other means have failed, but you're right, it's like its going out of fashion.

  3. It is popularly known as Clifton Road Gurdwara. It was opened by the Sangat following Baba Jaswant Singh in the 80s and some of the sangat like a few of the families we knew became attached to the Gurdwara and stopped attending Havelock. It's true Havelock langar was covered by a tent like structure for many years, before becoming a more permanent structure with tables inside where everyone generally stood, what I do not recall even from the early days is that men sat and drank there after the diwaan, something I will check with my father. What fond memories, loved the old Gurdwara, felt instant peace entering the Darbar and was very much a close knit family oriented environment where everyone more or less knew each other if one was a regular. Nowadays, and I'm not saying its a bad thing, we have these MASSIVE structures and no one mingles like they used to and the satkar of the elders is not present. Back then the Babey had no qualms about smacking children out of line or making excess noise
  4. The daemons involvement has never been in doubt, just surprised the corrupt GK did not take it to the authorities for a healthy sum and political favour. https://www.sikh24.com/2018/02/06/breaking-jagdish-tytlers-videos-confessing-murder-of-100-sikhs-made-public-by-manjit-singh-gk/#.WnmDpnOnwwA

For me I found reading Gurbani with speed helped in memorising. So for eg target for Jaap Sahib is 10 minutes then it becomes kantt.
  6. Another legend, nothing like what we now like to call puratan keertanis. Ras Mano!
  7. Agree, suicide is not the right term in this context. I read this is when they were longing for darshan of Dashmesh pita and were willing to sacrifice themselves in order to do so and whilst being saved received a message that Guru Ji would meet them at Nagina Ghat where they had darshan of Maharaj sitting on a throne and the Panj Piyare. Another version is they were offering themselves as food to crocodiles and fish, which to me seems less believable.
  8. Has OP used the tried and tested salotar I hear it works wonders
  9. Yep news to me!!

  11. This is how I understand it as well. They reduce significantly but are not completely obliterated.
  12. During the armed struggle of the 90s some Singh's kept cyanide capsule's. These were consumed before capture. Makes sense if they were unable to endure torture without jeopardising future missions or giving away location of others. I do wonder if in these exceptional circumstances and like ones already described there is a level of forgiveness involved so they can return not as a pret but in human form.

One thing is for sure it would immediately put a stop to practically all interfaith sham marriages IF properly implemented. What it won't do is stop the ones hellbent on going through with the ceremony, they'll get married regardless, by going to a dodgy Gurdwara committee - an area in which we Excel.
  14. Makes sense. Guess we're saying the 2nd syllable of ੜ sounds like a soft d. Being a stickler for correct pronunciation I prefer the use of a r in written format as well..
  15. get joora, but what's a jooda? is this an accent from another part of Punjab using a d instead of a r?
  16. We and SatGuru are not the same. Ghagga is a missionary with ludicrous theories. You can google him if interested.
  17. A joint effort with Kashmiris has grabbed the headlines. Never in all these years have I heard of a counter protest by pro going supporters. https://www.thenews.com.pk/print/273844-indian-authorities-rattled-by-kashmiri-and-sikh-protest-in-london http://www.timesnownews.com/international/article/republic-day-india-london-united-kingdoms-india-high-commission-azad-kashmir-pakistan/192761
  18. Tough one. Protesting in London annually hasn't made a difference in 34 years, we simply go there to remember the shaheeds and the kurbaniaan they undertook. In this particular case, the recommendations are to canvass MP's and pressure them to assist, still there is silence. Not even our Sikh MPs seem to bring it up frequently in house of commons question time. The real panga stems from us not having our own country which is then fronted by a strong leader. The existing stock of Jathedhars have no respect amongst Sikhs in Punjab and diaspora and therefore are not held in high regard at a Global level to affect change. We are far from this target, but a homeland will never be handed to us on a plate, we'll have to fight for it and I don't mean through International Courts!
  19. It's best you stay clear of Ghagga! So Guru Sahib who is the deliverer of humanity, dispels all pains, jagat jot, aap parmeshar, giver of life - experienced the same pain as humans? Is this your own mind telling you this (MAN mat) or do you actually have proof? Bhai Mati Dass read Japji Sahib whilst being sawn alive, Bhai Taru Singh Jee survived for several days without scalp, Bhai Bidhi Chandh was saved from a burning Kiln, yet you think Guru Jee who is also Nirankar felt pain, balle tere! The English translations are never great but the last line explains how Maharaj during Shaheedi did not even utter Tilaka Jaannjoo Raakhaa Parbha Taa Kaa ॥ Keeno Bado Kaloo Mahi Saakaa ॥ He protected the forehead mark and sacred thread (of the Hindus) which marked a great event in the Iron age. Saadhan Heti Eitee Jini Karee ॥ Seesu Deeyaa Paru See Na Aucharee ॥13॥ For the sake of saints, he laid down his head without even a sign.13.
  20. They toe the same line as the wider press to appease the UK government, without whose support they will be unable to charge a silly licence fee! India has always had the UK by the knackers, if it doesn't comply, it simply threatens to pull out of lucrative present and or future deals or share information on terror suspects - much like the Saudis. Which is why petitioning and protests usually bring about ZERO results.
  21. Nothing beats the sound of Sangat singing kirtan together.
  22. This is a new stupid even for the Indian press, she converted yet still labelling her Sikh! https://www.ndtv.com/world-news/18-year-old-british-sikh-girl-plotted-to-join-isis-in-syria-1804813
  23. Seemed like he was getting a little too excited with the camera in place..at one point he freezes and keeps the thaal on his dastar and looks directly at the camera for a few seconds.
