  1. Yes i always wondered that too. How could Sikhs surrender but then go on to fight glorius battles for the British like saragarhi. Last week was the barsi of Sant Baba Bir Singh Ji and when the kathavachak was telling about their shaheedi and the halaat of the Sikh Raaj, I understood how low the raj had fallen. For the Sikh army to kill a brahmgiani whose family had done so much kurbani for khalsa raaj...the phal of killing a sant was that our raaj out naash. Also a muslim wrote about the halaats about how a new king would be crowned everyday only to be beheaded the next. There were more deaths than even in the The Game of Thrones! So i think ur right, at the end the sikh fauj just wanted stability and comfort, so they accepted the goreh..
  2. Sikhi is not like other religions. It does not rest on belief only, for example sikhi does not say believe in this prophet or believe that God exists and u will be saved. Sikhi is about experience, seeking, and discipline to get to salvation. Just believing in God is not enough, you must meet him, find him, experience him. Of course to do this one must believe he exists. One way to find out about God is through the guru: if u can admire, love, and believe in guru then u know god exists. Cause guru says he does. I went through a rough time and started questioning everything but i could not deny god.cuz i had proof. When i asked my guru a question it was answered through the hukamnama. Try it, ask guruji ur questions and take a hukamnama. When i prayed for things with desperation, i have received. When i have felt sad and depressed, i have been consoled and comforted by gurbani and given ultimate peace. So i cant deny god, i have experienced that a greater power exists. However I do sometimes wonder if he cares enough or if i matter, usually when things get rough. About loving waheguru, some ppl have said how can u love someone u know nothing about? So learn about the personality and being and form of waheguru through gurbani, katha, through the stories of bhagats and our gurus, who have known god. Also read bhai vir singhs books and losten to audiobooks especially pyare jio. Its online free. He talks about this alot, i like his concept on how to do simran and have faith.First ask does waheguru exist? he says to say with. Full coviction waheguru exists "waheguru hai" then question "wat is he like?" He says smile ur biggest and feel happy then mentally say waheguru is peace giver , gifter of happiness "waheguru sukh data hai" Then ask where is he located? Think: he is everywhere around me, he is here now. In fact he is the one causing me to remember him and blessing me with joy "waheguru tera shukar hai. You the greatest of all, creator of universes n black holes, are thinking of me. Giving me the bliss of ur remembrance/ur name." I butchered it. Bhai vir singh explains it much better. Waheguru hai. Waheguru sukhdatha hai Waheguru tera shukar hai, tusi mainu yaad kita
  3. We went to pakistan from india from wagah border. You need to get ur visa from UK. Then go to wagah border with luggage. You need somebody to drive ur car back cuz ur not allowed to take ur car across the border. You will get a guide from india side who will lead u through. The guides sort of force themselves on u. You will have to go through two checkpoints one one india side one on pakistan.neans lots of standing around while they check ur luggage. I think foot is faster than train. Then on pakistan side u will have to hire driver to take u everywhere. Also they gonna force you to look at their wagah museum and buy something.

    Sikh Names

I think Josh means Bir Rass, Passion/enthusiasm, Fervour, Also u might want to spell the name differently cuz it seems like u wrote Josh as in short for Joshua..
  5. Ask for help first then accept bhana. Do ardaas like a child asking parents for help. The child has full trust and faith in parents. It knows that its parents will do whatever will make the child happy. So if parents say no, child knows they said no because they care for him and the parents knew it wouldn't make him happy.same way, do ardaas with full faith that god hears u, cares for u, and will give u watever will make u happy. And so if u do ardaas and u dont get that, then u have to follow bhana. Then u have to say, watever u do is good guruji. I know i didnt get wat i wanted because it isnt good for me. God like a parent knows, wat u need and wat is good for u. So u have to accept the results of ur ardaas with bhana. If ur ardaas is fulfilled, great, god is kind. If ur ardaas is not fulfilled, great, god knows best. There is a story of a Christian nun, amy Carmichael. When she was small, she prayed brgore bedtime "God i like blue eyes. Could you please change my brown eyes to blue?" next morning she was really excited and she ran to the mirror. She was disappointed to see her brown eyes. She thought god has not answered my prayers. Everyone says god is nice he answers all prayers. Then she realized, he did answer. He said, "No." she realized i asked him if he could change my eye color and he hasnt which means he said no. This is the faith one should have. That god hears and answers all prayers. Sometimes he says no. And sikhi teaches us to accept his no gratefully, in bhana. To think that God is kindness itself so he said no for a good reason. So doing ardaas is not going against hukum and does not mean u r not following bhana. Following bhana is like that good child who asks his parents for everything and when they say no, he does not get resentful or angry. He accepts cheerfully and does not forget all the other times his parents said yes and all the stuff they gave him. All parents want their kids to ask them for help so dont hesitate to ask God. However dont be like those bad kids that even parents dont like: when the parents refuse him something, he gets angry, throws a tantrum, and when the parents try to explain why or remind him look how many toys u already have, the kid says i dont care. Always ask guruji for help and things like bhagat dhanna did in aarti.
  6. It does not change. You will still have the same problems and issues as before. For example if you were addicted to alcohol, even after amrit, u will still be addicted. The only thing that changes is that u get more responsibilities and duties. You have to keep rehat. And u will have to fight all ur issues by ur self, alone. Otherwise u will disgrace ur sikhi if u give into ur addictions and dont foght them. and u will have to try to keep discipline like wake up amrit vela and do nitnem everyday and keep other rehits like not eating out or keeping ur head covered...(depending on wat rehit the panj pyare give u)
  7. Become an engineer and then find ways, invent things so ppl in Africa can get water, tsunamis in 3rd world countries can be stopped, you can build earthquake resistant houses for the poor, make fossil fuel less cars and electricity. I think the best thing to do is wat was said above, get a good high paying job than volunteer ur time and money to the great organizations out there. Like Habitat for Humanity, peace corps, Khalsa Aid, MediCorps, water.org....
  8. Do another ardaas and ask for an extension and forgiveness for not fulfilling the ardaas. Say guru sahib ji maaf karna, i could not finish wat i promised, now please allow me this many more days to finish. This is better than trying to paaths in a hurry
  9. Thanks! This book is good, it even mentions grammer in gurbani! Ive been trying to learn gurbani grammer for a while but it was hard because the words for plural, noun, adjective are confusing. So thanks again... Also the writing us very easy to understand
  10. https://youtu.be/3TX-Nu5wTS8 Dont turn a bad day into a decade!!!
  11. Sikhs get criticized for their role in imperial British army: https://youtu.be/iCUsl3EjQuI
  12. What is the protest about?
  13. Do sukhmani sahib. It is supposed to destroy black magic. Also ur symptoms seem like depression. Get it checked.
  14. You only need to take a shower if going to tabya of sri guru granth sahib ji. For gutka sahibs, wash hands 5x after washroom. For photos and other holy material, washing hands once is fine.
  15. From my experience, which may not be truely representative: when i was taking santhiya, the teacher would say this word is pronounced thus though some people say it like this. But that is incorrect as the meaning changes or we have to add a matra or because this sant said to.say ot this way.I was raised in a taksali environment, but when i grew up (lol), i was exposed to akjs. Their way of thinking and doing santhiya and things. And i realized most of the differences my santhiya teacher attributed to 'some ppl do this' were referring to the way akjs do things. That was shocking. I had thought the other ppl were ppl who had not taken santhiya or did not know. I didnt know it was for an alternative way to do things. But having said that, i really liked ppl i met in both jathas. You shoukd really try to meet some ppl in jathas and taksal yourself. Its really cool how much they are into sikhi than us average sikhs. Of course tne youngsters take it too far, but kids like making cliques. So really try to meet some jatha/taksal singhs
  16. I thought the UK gurudware/Sikhs were implementing an anand karaj course that all ppl who wanna do an anand karaj have to take. Or they were gonna vote on implementing it?
  17. Good point. The appearance of strength n success was there but only appearance. The truth is under maharaja Ranjit singh, the sikh panth fell to an all time low. (We only fell lower after 84.) the previous generation, the misl period had to do alot with the success. They drove out the mughals, and kept ahmad shah abdali at bay. They built the sikh army, the misl system, which would come together to fight the invaders. They conquered vast territory. Ranjit singh was living on their spoils. In some ways ranjit singh used the spoils to good effect: plating golden temple, hiring european army trainers and building a better cavalry and cannons, and taking conquest further to the west. Also his tolerance and secularity were due to his sikh values. In other ways,he destroyed their legacy: allowing the mixing sikh traditions with hindu and other, creating divides between sikhs on territory and land. You can see as soon as he died, his kingdom fell apart. And the sikh panth was in shambles. You can see how much work the sikhs had to do afterwards: fighting the british, the masands, and the wrong traditions. I think a person should be judged on what he left behind for the next generation, what he did for the next generation. And the misl periods and before were the most successful in building us something. Ranjit singh took that, used it, and let it be ruined. Did not make provisions to make it last. Like our generation in the west is enjoying wealth, creating technology at a very fast rate. This is success but only possible due to gains (technological and others) made by the world wars and after generations. And what are we leaving for the next generation? Pollution, wars in middle east n elsewhere, and shrinking middle class, inequality, crony capitalism etc...
  18. That makes no sense. Everyone values jewels. Its not like if the kohinoor had come from Russia or something, the british would throw it in the gutter. They are not keeping it in the crown jewels because it came from sikhs, but because its a pretty big jewel. In no way is it a matter of honor for sikhs that the british have the kohinoor.it just warspoils from having conquered the sikhs. So i agree that the british have the right to it now. Because when they got it, warspoils was a legit way to gain posessions. Though their lahore treaty n pretending maharaja daleep was still the king was a bit shady. They should have just disposed of the monarchs, instead kidnapping a five year old away from his mother and country in order to keep control. But thats another matter. Also 'the british are a "major superpower" and so if they even mention sikhs its a great honor for us' mentality u got there is bizarre. British may be a superpower now, but they only got there by conquering other superpowers: The sikh kingdom, ottoman empire, among others. So being british wete the only ones to be a superpower, sikhs had a pretty great kingdom too. And all superpowers decline sometime or other so dont be too infatuated. That brings us to ur other assertion about why we still live in the west. The truth is we were born here. And when we grew up we questioned, why am I, so different than the host country end up here? The obvious answer is our parents moved here for economic reasons. But why? And the history Johhny has tried to explain you is where we find our answer. Its the reason britain became a superpower, conquering and destroying our land and culture and then leaving us no choice but to choose between pakistan and india in the end. When we realize this, about how britain used us, we could pack our bags and run back to india or we could stay here and do something for our community. We choose to that which is more sensible.
  19. You will become better by practice. So have conversations with ppl u can speak panjabi. Specially old people like ur grandparents and parents. Also read newspapers and books written in panjabi
  20. Thats what i thought too. This has got to be the weirdest wording ever. But then i realized, it was to encourage sehajdharis to move onto the next stage, amritdhari. If u thought just believing in God, ten gurus, their writings was enough to make u sikh. Then no need to take amrit. But if u 'believed' in amrit, u would believe that without it i am incomplete. And it would be a future step. Therefore I think it was smart to add this clause.
  21. Its been doscussed on basics of sikhi : https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=M3kASFLipVs And on this site too. I like this one: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=wIGwZ13y26s
  22. I saw a comment by singhstreetstyle(SSS) on basicsof sikhi youtube channel. It was sad. SSS had said something positive but there were alot of comments telling him u r a disgrace to sikhi, and u have no right to comment, u r a fake sikh, stop cutting ur dhari..etc I think style with kaur and singhstreet style are ok. Of course not in line with sikhi. But we should leave them alone and not try to stop them. They r the other side of the coin to how bollywood portrays sikhs, as fat bumbling idiots. And only people who care about looks n fashion follow them, so i dont think its harming. One thing i have a problem with is style with kaur justifying whats shes doing by saying the gurus dressed like royalty, so they would want us to look nice. trivalizing gurus message and making it seem so shallow....that was disheartening. But i think alot of ppl are at different levels in their spiritual journey and get different things out of sikhi
