    I see where you're coming from. So it was originally, theoretically, almost a system based on a complete living organism, and in order for that organism to successfully exist and operate, its constituent parts need to function in harmony? One damaged part, and the whole thing would either function inefficiently, of cease to function at all? Is that what you meant?

God, i really do try to give these jokers the benefit of the doubt time and time again, but they just don't make it possible to trust them.

    I see. In that case i suppose things are easier when there's less mouths to feed. It's just that most Muslims in their working class strongholds, even in places like England, don't see it that way. They continue to breed beyond their means. Although the professional middle-class types don't follow that pattern. So i guess it's less about religion and more to do with education.

    I generally agree with the opinions expressed in this thread, but i think there's only so long we can repeat the "quality over quantity" mantra until someone asks where this quality is hiding itself. Such quality would, eventually, manifest itself in some measurable or discernible form beyond the scope of appearances. Yet in my opinion we're actually regressing in many respects.

    What annoys me is the often implicit suggestion that the people on the receiving end of these political games are angelic, unspoiled victims of chicanery being unwittingly duped by the big bad state. Spend five minutes with them, and you tell me if they think they're foolish and gullible. They aren't victims. They just don't care. That's the truth of the matter. Material gain and worthless trinkets are more important to them than integrity and any long-term welfare of their homeland. We talk about them being brainwashed by the Indian state, and therefore they're unable to realise their mental enslavement, but it's funny how once they arrive overseas they immediately start displaying such amazing political awareness. So where was this knowledge and insight just a few weeks or months previously? Jokers to a man.

    Does anyone have access to the Sant Singh Khalsa translation of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji in text file format? Not pdf, doc, or anything else; just in .txt. I understand it is available, because a few of the major Gurbani apps use it as the source for their texts.

    Something I've noticed over the years when it comes to non-Sikh reactions to issues that affect us and that we have every right to highlight, is how there's an insidious desire to drown out our voice. It's a very dismissive attitude, and one that suggests we shouldn't speak up for ourselves. It happens quite regularly in the West, and i do wonder how that's come about.

    So true. The thing is they're entitled to reap the benefits of their hard work, but i laugh when they start dropping pangtia from Gurbani in order to desperately justify their one-track obsession with accumulating as much as they can get their hands on. It's similar to when a Sikh has an unnatural and excessive liking for wearing and buying gold jewellery, and you remind them that Sikhi doesn't look favourably on the gratuitous indulgence of such vulgarities, and they respond with, "Leh! Sadhe Guru Sahib sohneh toh begher pherdeh si?" And then you remind them that Guru Sahib also sacrificed his father, mother, and four sons, and you ask them if they plan on emulating that aspect of their life, too. Not a peep in response, lol.

    Totally agree. Yet jatha adherence and fervour for certain personalities seems to be getting out of hand. I'm not sure you're referring to the same jatha I'm alluding to - let's not begin a guessing game - but it is a problem which, amazingly, isn't considered to be a big deal. Oh but it will be a huge deal one day.

    The reasons for taking amrit would need to identified and confronted (for both sexes), even if that means facing up to a few uncomfortable truths that have never, or rarely, been discussed. Because looking around at the state of the panth today in the West (beyond the dazzle of the surface), do you not wonder about certain individuals, "What is it about Sikhi that drew YOU to take amrit, you poor excuse for a human being?" We could flap our gums and pay lip service whilst ignoring the hathi in the room, or we could get serious.

    You'd be surprised at how little most Sikhs know about the individuals you've listed above aside from the very basics. I'd start with them before turning my attention to the day-to-day localised individuals. Give people a wider religious context of the women that stood shoulder to shoulder with the notable male figures of the panth.

    In my opinion they need strong female voices to remind them of what Sikhi is, not what they'd like it to be. The undergrowth will need to be cleared from the woodland so all that remains are the trees. Undergrowth = extraneous ideologies that are conflated with Sikhi that bear little to no relevance to its ideals.

    I say the following with the utmost sincerity, but if Gursikh bibis are serious about setting an example from a Gurmat perspective minus any of the frankly incompatible influences of modern liberalism, they'll have to stand apart from the men. You can't even be seen to be standing in their shadow, or encourage the idea that some unseen male hands are pulling the strings. I've noticed that's a tactic certain whites use to undermine female Muslim adherents, by stating they've been brainwashed by the overwhelming "maleness" of their religion; basically they're acting out of obligation and fear instead of genuine conviction. Equally, don't get caught up in the sisterhood aspect of it all that you begin to alienate Sikh brothers. It's a fine line to tread, just like Sikhi, and it won't be easy. Your loyalty should be to the non-partisan ideals of Sikhi, not women, men, or any other group. Sacrifices will need to be made on many fronts: personal, social, professional, etc, but if you and like-minded bibis are serious, i don't see why good cannot come of this.

    I'd be very interested, from a statistical standpoint, the spread of female Gursikhs across the various jathe; or not as the case may be. I think a lot could be gained from identifying which jatha attracts the highest numbers of female Sikhs. From there you could ascertain why that is, and certain groups could take steps to correct a potential imbalance. Anecdotally i have an idea which jatha has the highest numbers of female Gursikhs, but it's just a hunch. However, that would only work if the female takes amrit before marriage. I might be way off target here, but I'm assuming a female is expected to follow the same rehat as her husband, so i suppose she has less choice in her adherence to a certain jatha's rehat, than a female who decides not to wait to see which jatha her husband belongs to.
