  2. BREAKING: DHUMMA SAYS DAMDAMI TAKSAL WILL NOT ATTEND SARBAT KHALSA AMRITSAR: Prominent seminary Damdami Taksal has decided not to participate in the Sarbat Khalsa convened by various Sikh religious and political bodies on November 10 in Amritsar. Going by the aspirations of a majority of common Sikhs and religious bodies, the Taksal has demanded removal of jathedars of Takhts, who are its former students, and at the same time it has refused to extend support to Sarbat Khalsa. Talking to TOI , Damdami Taksal chief Baba Harnam Singh Khalsa said, We are not participating in the Sarbat Khalsa. He said the time was not apt for convening Sarbat Khalsa, but to bring unity among various factions within Sikh groups and hold serious deliberations on restoring the pride of Guru Granth Sahib that was hurt due to acts of sacrilege by anti-social elements. First of all we have to resolve these issues and then Sarbat Khalsa can be convened, he said. On the other hand, extending support to Sarbat Khalsa, Panthic Sewa Lehar founder Baljeet Singh Daduwal said, Sarbat Khalsa is the voice of conscience of common Sikhs aimed at creating unity among them and to reach at a consensus on religious issues, including deciding the area of jurisdiction of Sikh priests, their selection and removal norms, besides discussing on the issues being faced by Panth. Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) general secretary Jarnail Singh Sakhira said, Yes, there is a clear divide between saints. One side of Sikh saints is independent and enjoys support of the Panth while another is pro SAD (Badal). SAD (Amritsar) is one among several groups that have given call for Sarbat Khalsa. Sakhira said all Sikh organizations, which had given call for Sarbat Khalsa, would meet at Jalandhar on Saturday and from Sunday onwards preparations to hold the congregation near Baba Naudh Singh Samadh on Tarn Taran road would begin. He said prominent Sikhs saints and groups, including Ranjit Singh Dhadrianwala, Panth Preet Singh, Ranjit Singh, Damdami Taksal (Ajnala faction) and Darshan Singh were part of Sarbat Khalsa while Khalsa-led Gurmat Sidhant Parcharak Sant Samaj opposed the congregation. Sikh think-tank Kuldeep Singh said, Sarbat Khalsa will see a vertical split between Sant Samaj, which will be unfortunate. He said Sikh intellectuals, saints and academics shouldnt be taking sides but maintain a neutral gesture in the society. This kind of Sarbat Khalsa, which has already divided community will not solve any purpose and rather further deepen the religious crisis, he said. http://dailysikhupdates.com/breaking-dhumma-says-damdami-taksal-will-not-attend-sarbat-khalsa/
  3. A n editorial in the Khalsa Advocate (English), December 15, 1904, summed up the situation which existed before the emergence of the Singh Sabha thus: ". . . false gurus grew up in great abundance whose only business was to fleece their flock and pamper their own self-aggrandizement. Properly speaking, there was no Sikhism. Belief in the Gurus was gone. The idea of brotherhood in the Panth was discarded. The title of 'Bhai' so much honoured by Sikhs of old, fell into disuse and contempt. Sikhs grovelled in superstition and idolatry... It [sikhism] had thus lost all that was good and life-giving in the faith." Letter in the Khalsa Akhbar, October 8, 1897, reported: "On Tuesday, Bhadon 31, the pujaris of the Tarn Taran Gurdwara held the shradha ceremony in honour of Guru Arjan Sahib Ji . Those feasted were from outside the faith and they smoked." Before Singh Sabha, situation was so bad that even Giani Ditt Singh , a very much honored literary giant of Singh Sabha movement had to withdraw from gurdwara when Karah Prashad was to be served, reason being that he was from "low caste", and many priests as well well educated devotees were followers of this anti-Sikhism casteism ritual.
  4. This is what was happening at Darbar Sahib when the mahants controled it. The precincts began to be used by pandits and astrologers for the propagation of superstitious practices. Idols were openly worshipped in the holy compound. Dirty booklets were sold and shops of all sorts were opened in the premises. On the Basant and the Holi days licentious songs were sung by musicians inside the Temple. Eogues roamed about harassing women. Brothels were opened in the neighbouring houses, where unwary women visiting the Temple were taken for immoral purposes, some sadhus acting as agents.* In 1905 with the general awakening in the country, the Sikhs felt their grievances keenly and determined to right some of the outstanding wrongs. The idols were re-moved, and a widespread agitation was set on foot to nationalise the control of the Darbar Sahib.
  5. DHUMMA HOLDS MEETING WITH BADALS TO REMOVE JATHEDARS Chandigarh : Damdami Taksal and Sant Samaj led by Taksal chief Harnam Singh Dhumma on Wednesday met Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, demanding immediate removal of the jathedars, including Akal Takht jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh. They said that being president of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), Sukhbir Badal should direct the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) to remove the Takht jathedars as they had lost the confidence of Sikhs following the pardon granted to Sirsa dera head Ram Rahim. dhumma The delegation submitted a memorandum to the chief minister and demanded the immediate arrest of those behind the incidents of desecration of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. Both Badal and Sukhbir assured them to look into this. The delegation thanked the Badals for removing Sumedh Saini as DGP. They also demanded that the Punjab Police officials involved in firing on Sikh protesters be shifted. Dhumma was accompanied by religious leaders, including Bhai Jasbir Singh Rode and Sant Lakha Singh Nanaksarwale. Senior SAD MPs Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, Balwinder Singh Bhundar and Ranjit Singh Brahmpura were also present. Pardon by the jathedars to the Sirsa dera head was given in a secretive manner, and was withdrawn following backlash from the Sikh community. Despite this, there is still unrest in the community and the jathedars are facing tremendous opposition so much so that they are unable to perform their duties, so they should be removed, Dhumma said in the memorandum. Dhumma also demanded that the special investigating team (SIT) headed by senior Punjab Police officials be disbanded as those who had ordered the firing were its part, and a new one constituted. He said it had been two weeks since the incident but the SIT had failed to reach a conclusion. He also demanded the unconditional release of brothers Rupinder Singh and Jaswinder Singh, who had been arrested for the sacrilege. http://dailysikhupdates.com/dhumma-holds-meeting-with-badals-to-remove-jathedars/

  12. TAKHT PATNA SAHIB ISSUES ‘HUKAMNAMA’ CONDEMNING ‘PANJ PIYARE’ Takht Patna Sahib Jathedar Giani Iqbal Singh issued a Hukamnama condemning the decision of the Panj Piyare of the Akal Takht Sahib which called for the removal of all Takht Jathedars after no response the issued summons. Giani Iqbal Singh has been believed to have ties with the RSS and was one of the 5 Jathedars who gave Dera Sauda Head the pardon for the 2007 act of sacrilege. It becomes clear that Giani Iqbal Singh is now using the Panj Piyare of Takht Patna Sahib to his own benefit and to further cause divisions. After pressure from Sikhs worldwide, SGPC Head Makkar was forced to reinstate the Panj Piyare. Makkar had called their decision invalid and stated the Panj Piyare had no authority to take such decision. Giani Iqbal Singh is believed to have acted under the orders of Takht Patna Sahib Board’s President Avtar Singh Makkar. http://dailysikhupdates.com/takht-patna-sahib-issues-hukamnama-condemning-panj-piyare/
