  11. US Sikh organisations have expressed anger over changes allowing airport security staff to "pat down" turbans. Until now turbans have been searched or removed only to resolve an unexplained alarm from an airport metal detector. But now security will have greater discretion to inspect turbans so that they can be manually checked for objects such as non-metallic weapons. However Sikh groups have responded to the new measures by describing them as outrageous and discriminatory. Sikh men wear turbans to cover their hair, which they leave uncut in accordance with their religion. Organisations representing Sikhs have only recently completed a publicity campaign to explain the significance of the kirpan, or religious sword, to security officials. The Transportation Security Administration insisted the new policy was necessary to counter the threat of improvised bombs and chemical weapons. In Britain, the government said recently that private searches of turbans might be necessary as part of airport security. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/6963314.stm

  14. Police have disabled a car bomb containing gas cylinders in the heart of central London. Officers carried out a controlled explosion after reports of a suspicious vehicle parked in Haymarket shortly before 0200 BST (0100 GMT). The area was cordoned off while police examined what they described as a "potentially viable explosive device". Prime Minister Gordon Brown said Britain faces "a serious and continuous threat". He added the public "need to be alert" at all times. Map The prime minister's comments were echoed by the new Home Secretary Jacqui Smith who is to chair a meeting of the government's emergency unit Cobra. The BBC's Andy Tighe said the timing was significant coming a day after Gordon Brown became prime minister, and with the second anniversary of the 7 July bombings approaching. A witness reported seeing gas canisters being removed from the car, a silver Mercedes, at around 0400 BST (0300 GMT). Bouncers from a nearby nightclub said they saw the car being driven erratically before it crashed into a bin. They said the driver then got out and ran off. Police sources have confirmed that gas canisters were involved in the incident, close to Piccadilly Circus. But Scotland Yard has refused to comment on reports that a large number of nails were found in the car. TRAVEL DISRUPTIONS Piccadilly Circus tube station closed Haymarket closed between Pall Mall and Piccadilly Circus Buses diversions in the area with delays of more than 45 minutes Heavy traffic around Trafalgar Square and Charing Cross Rd Coventry St, Whitcomb St, Shaftesbury Ave and Cambridge Circus closed One police source said the bomb was a "big device" and posed a real and substantial threat to the area around Haymarket, which is in London's theatreland. But a Westminster source said it was a "relatively small" device. Dozens of forensic officers examined the scene and the car was removed for further examination. Scotland Yard said detectives from Counter Terrorism Command were investigating the potential bomb plot and will be checking the CCTV in the area. Police are believed to have also carried out a search of other key areas in the capital shortly after the discovery of the car. Lower Regent Street Surrounding streets were closed A spokesman said: "Police were called to reports of a suspicious vehicle parked in Haymarket, shortly before 2am this morning. "As a precautionary measure the immediate area was cordoned off while the vehicle was examined by explosives officers. "They discovered what appeared to be a potentially viable explosive device. This was made safe." Police say Haymarket is likely to remain closed for some time and severe travel disruption is predicted. Piccadilly Circus Tube station is closed and trains are not stopping, while local bus services are being diverted. The BBC's Daniela Relph, at the scene, said the heart of London was completely closed off and police officers were concentrating on keeping people away. 'No intelligence' Professor Paul Wilkinson, a terrorism expert, said a passer-by had tipped off the police and officers would be concerned they did not have prior intelligence. The current terrorism threat level has been classed as severe - meaning an attack is highly likely - since 14 August 2006. Intelligence sources said they were keeping an open mind on who was responsible for the car bomb. Grab of car The car was later removed John O'Connor, former commander of Scotland Yard's Flying Squad, told BBC News the incident bore all the "hallmarks" of a failed suicide bomb attempt. And it was "lucky" the police had received the tip-off . Defence Secretary Des Browne said: "It does appear to be a very serious incident. "My first reaction to this is, thank God that we have police and explosives experts who can make these devices safe, and the arrangements they appear to have done, and that nobody has been injured." Extra security measures have been put in place at Westminster, MPs and peers have been told. Surrounding streets were closed The car was later removed
  15. Sikhs have gone to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg to challenge a French law banning the wearing of turbans for ID documents. The United Sikhs organisation filed a complaint on behalf of French national Shingara Mann Singh, 52, who was refused a replacement driver's licence. By law applicants have to remove all headgear for security reasons. A French law adopted in 2004 also bans the wearing of conspicuous religious symbols in state schools. Several Sikh boys have been expelled from schools in France for defying the ban, which also applies to Muslim headscarves. Stolen Mr Singh was twice refused a replacement driver's licence - in 2005 and 2006 - because he insisted on wearing his turban for the photograph. He has been a French national for more than 20 years. "I will give up my head but not my turban, which covers my unshorn hair," he said, quoted by United Sikhs. His licence was stolen two years ago, he said, and "before the robbery, at no time was I asked to substitute the photograph with one showing me without a turban". The Sikh religion requires males to wear their hair unshorn and covered at all times by a turban - a key aspect of their identity. These French Sikhs were expelled from school over their turbans http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/6742341.stm
  16. Fateh... How ten pounds looks so big when we take it to the Gurdwara, But so small when we take it shopping. How long 60 minutes is when we are sitting in the Gurdwara, But so short when on the computer, shopping or watching T.V. How boring it is to read from a Gutka or Pothee, But how easy it is to read 200-300 psges of a best selling novel. How we believe what people or newspapers say, But question what Guru Ji says. How we can't think of anything to say when we pray, But don't have any difficulty in thinking of things to gossip about. How we need 2 or 3 weeks to fit a Sikhi event into our schedule, But have no problem adjusting for a social event at the last minute. How thrilled we get when a football game goes into overtime, But complain when a kirtan programme is longer than usual. How we scramble to get a front row seat at a sporting event or concert, But scramble to get the back row seat at the Gurdwara. How difficult it is to share the Guru's word with others, But how simple it is to spread rumours. How we all want to go Heaven, Provided we don't have to believe, think, say, or do anything. Fateh...

  18. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/south_east/6177501.stm A stall holder who raped a woman 18 years ago as she tried on a pair of jeans in a south Wales market has been jailed for four-and-a-half years. Sukhdarshan Singh, 52, from Wolverhampton, followed the woman into his van after offering her the opportunity to try the jeans on. He could not be traced after the attack in Bridgend but his DNA was found. Cardiff Crown court heard he was finally arrested when a routine DNA swab linked him to the attack. It followed his arrest for drink-driving and detectives were able to match his profile to that of the woman's attacker. He pushed her down on a pile of clothes, pinned her down and raped her Prosecuter Martin Kelly Singh, from Bilstown, Wolverhampton, initially denied the rape allegation but changed his plea to guilty on the first day of his trial. Prosecutor Martin Kelly told Cardiff Crown Court: "The woman had chosen a size 10 pair of jeans but was not sure if they would fit. "So Singh offered to let her use his van to try them on. "She went in - and so did Singh. "He pushed her down on a pile of clothes, pinned her down and raped her." The court heard when Singh had finished with the woman he said: "Stay here, I have another friend." The effect of your crime was to cause her to feel so bad about herself that she contemplated suicide Judge William Gaskell The court heard how the woman, who was 59 at the time of the offence, struggled to lead a normal life after the attack. The mother-of-nine had blamed the unsolved rape with difficulties she had with her marriage and the recent death of her husband. Mr Kelly said: "She was married at 17 and had never slept with another man apart from Singh." Judge William Gaskell jailed Singh for four-and-a-half years and ordered him to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life. He said: "The effect of your crime was to cause her to feel so bad about herself that she contemplated suicide. "Your crime devastated her relationship with her husband and their sexual relationship was permanently damaged. "You caused her family huge distress. "She believes her husband died as a result of the stress bought into their relationship by the rape." Family pain Speaking after the sentencing the woman's daughter criticised the length of the sentence. She said: "I just wish my father had been here to see him go to prison. "It is impossible to tell how much damage Singh has done to our family. "My mother will continue to suffer the pain from that crime." Singh was bought to justice as a result of South Wales Police's involvement in Operation Moscow, which links sex offenders to historic DNA samples. The ongoing operation is led by Detective Chief Inspector Paul Bethell who said: "We will continue our work into historic offences of this nature and bring these men to justice."
