  1. i'm looking for something that is more straightforward for non-sikhs. Most of them could easily find sites from other dharms teaching how to meditate, but i wanted to find a sikh site.
  2. Is there any website out there that clearly teaches how to jap naam and is aimed at non-sikhs?

    Failure

i've been through the same stuff. where are you applying?? the larger firms tend to use people and then throw them away when they are all used up. it's also a lot harder to try to get a job with them. try the smaller firms. most of them don't even advertise. generally, jobs with them are gained through networking skills. Also, look up some guides on networking and following up properly. If the jobs in an area are tapped out, you may need to consider relocating, but try setting a deadline of a few months for finding your job. in the meantime, maybe try finding some related work to fill in the gaps in the resume. volunteer. 2nd point, people get depressed and in a funk b/c they make THEMSELVES, their skills, their family, their wife the anchor of their life. Make Satguru your anchor, your Ot, your aasra. This will give you greater happiness in life and help keep you in chardi kala. Chardi kala doesn't come from transient things like jobs or status, it comes from within, from serious abhyaas of naambani. Do REGULAR (NO MATTER WHAT) abhyaas with sangat and the extra energy boost will make a huge difference in your life. be patient, it can take weeks or months to notice it. but the difference is huge, i know b/c i've been in your situation and done all this. Look at all this as an important learning experience that will increase your sharda in God. 3rd point, don't blame God, it's your karma. You can be smart and work hard, if something is not in your karma, you will not get it. we must improve our karma. how? Simran, Seva, Sangat, avoidance of paap actions, and Ardass, proper planning, and effort. That little sentence there is the real Secret, not some wishy washy new age pick and choose your own spirituality psychobabble that's mass marketing mental garbage out to the world. nishkaam simran (done without worldly desires) gives the greatest benefits. that formula will improve anyone's life. pralabdh karams still must be paid off in this life, but nishkaam simran can, over time, reduce the severity of those as well. 4th, while doing a job search, get another job just to pay some bills. you don't have to list it on your resume if you don't want to. when you know you've got a steady income then it can stave off panic.
  4. HE'S been challenged to many debates. he has run away from all of them using some excuse or other.

  6. when your mind is clear and alert, study. when it's tired, use that for bani or resting or working out. or for chores. do some basic pranayam everyday to help with alertness and watch what you eat. heavy foods, junk food, make a person sleepy. read this http://personalmba.com/power-of-full-engagement/ and read teh full book after exams.
  7. Thanks. The only other source I know is Bhagat ji's visraam pothi, and srigranth.org. But both of those don't have the bisraams for nitnem banis. Are there any other resources out there as well? \
  8. Does anyone have the Nanaksar version of the ardass? I like it better b/c it's so poetic, just pure prema bhagti
  9. i bought the sony ebook reader. it's better than kindle b/c some files can be 'reflowed', meaning that the font size can be increased. it works on some bani fonts, not so well on others. i'm guessing it may have something to do with suing true type fonts, but i'm not sure. the gurbanifiles.org files can all be read easily on sony or kindle. sony can reflow the text wiht no problem. kindle can zoom in on it in portrait mode as well as landscape for any file. but with kindle, some of the english translation may be cut off as the zoom gradations are very chunky and cannot be finetuned. overall, i like sony b/c of easier navigation. kindle is a tiny bit nicer to read, but lacks touchscreen.
  10. you need bani to strengthen yourself, and regular proper sangat. avoid bad sangat that creates doubts in you mind, even if that 'bad' sangat are all friends. i recommend reading gurmukh jeevans to see how much they have sacrificed, read sant jeevans, and listen to katha on the Gurus lives. this will build up faith and strength.
  11. Some people go to gurdwara to learn and move forward, others to do nindya, gossip, have fun. so some benefit, while others leave with your paap on their head after doing nindya. all sangats have this mixture of "good" and the "bad", including catholic sangats. even in sants sangat you will find this. it's a game, the point is to ignore the bad and gain what lahaa we can. do an ardass from the heart with full faith mahaaraj will answer you, and we will. stay true to your atma and don't betray your amrit vows. and start trying to do more paath at home with your wife. sometimes people need a boost of internal strength to stay the course, and that comes from bani. maybe start having a kirtan program or sukhmani sahib at home every week or so and invite some people from the gurdwara. there are a lot of proper sikhs out there who don't judge based on race, but who also don't socialise just to socialise much. by havin a dharmic activiity at the centre of the socialisation it may be easier to break the ice.
  12. Does anybody know where to find any of the nitnem banis with bisraams noted ?
  13. love the post. Amrit is the initiation to our Guru. The bhagat sahibaan existed before Khande batte da Amrit was pargat, but they did take initiation from their Guru. Like in the sakhi when Bhagat Kabir ji lay in the path of his (soon to be) teacher, his teacher's foot struck him as it was dark, and he said 'wake up and say Raam'. That was his initiation. The various saints of various dharms do get an initiation from their teacher, whatever form it may take. In ours, it is Amrit. I also believe when we get Amrit, it comes with us to our next janam; If someone was close to the Guru in a past janam, then they have that Amrit with them from that time. most of us don't know our past, we are still asleep, and we take Amrit as part of that process of awakening.
  14. What is the best Gurmukhi font for Sikhi related projects ??? I'm looking for something which is very easy to read. I dislike it when it's hard to distinguish hora from kanaura with some fonts, or where the doolanv looks like lanv. Making the font large size is not always the most practical option. which font would you guys recommend???
  15. karamaat do exist. many of us have seen them. they are not wrong, or right; desirable or undesirable. in our dharm we are supposed to chase after naam and not ridh sidh or karamaat. but they do happen.
  16. sometimes it's hard to get a move on to doing things related to sikh jeevan. this is when sangat is a huge help. doing REGULAR simran/kirtan/paath or seva with sangat gives a person an energy boost that over time will make it easier to be disciplined and to walk the Guru's marag. also, doing an ardaass pledging more effort to Guru ji if maharaj gives the kirpa and then really seriously trying will help a person out a lot. it's okay to just do one or two changes at a time.
  17. I think Kam1825 wrote an english language teeka of this granth. pm him. you can find it on DTF books.
  18. If you're old enough to be near university age, you're old enough to make your own decision. There are tons of gursikhs who went through med school, law school, numerous other professional schools. Sikhi didn't slow them down one bit. In fact, I was told by a doctor who had been through med school that he wouldn't have survived residency without Amritvela.
  19. its mandatory at least once in the morning. but you can do it anytime as well. @ Kaljugi you don't have to do anand sahib after reciting your 5 chaupai, or after anything else. but it's kirpa.

    Which Job/Career

medicine really depends on what field you work in. also, keep in mind that you DO get seva kamai from your kirta from serving people, even though it`s not nishkaam!! you`ll get a ton more kamai from helping save lives as a doctor than you would in many other fields, despite the extra busy-ness slash workload of doctors. plus you could do seva missions to help gareeb lok. i`ll second that pharmacy seems to have a great work life balance.

    Which Job/Career

http://calnewport.com/blog/ has some good guides on choosing. be aware with law that sometimes there are serious ethical issues for sikhs. for example, we are not supposed to help people get divorces, but many firms do family law so you wouldn't be able to work there.
  22. get rid of facebook and msn scratch that social itch by scheduling time for real face to face contact. you'll find it a lot more satisfying and desire for facebook may decrease. work out. just cuz all students need to get rid of that stress in a physical way as well as spiriutal (mool mantr)
  23. thank you so much for that link

i look forward to the day when I can finally have darshan of this amazing mahapurkh

  24. another was that he didn't eat meat, which niddar saw as a weakness
