Just wanted to mention there is a great news pure vegetarian restaurant in Ilford called Kulcha Express. No meat served whatsoever. Really nice food. I'm posting because I think it's important to support Sikh businesses. 43 York road Ilford IG1 3ad
  3. Sikhi nowadays has just become an identity for most people. They feel proud they are sikh, which is good, but that's really where their sikhi ends. They drink alcohol, eat meat, practice in lust, and still call themselves a sikh. You maybe a "sikh" but not a sikh of the gurus. There are many reasons to NOT eat meat but I will list the most important one; because our gurus said so, and it's in SGGS, over and over again. "Sikhs" who say it's okay to eat meat, even the ones keeping dari kesh, are ones who don't even read SGGS. “You keep your fasts to please Allah, while you murder other beings for pleasure. You look after your own interests, and so not see the interests of others. What good is your word? O Qazi, the One Lord is within you, but you do not think or contemplation on Him. You do not care for others, you are mad about religion, this is why your life is wasting away.” (Kabir, Guru Granth Sahib Ji, 483) That's what sikhi is becoming today. People are focused on the religion side than the spiritual side, what really matters.. Katha people, instead of doing actual katha are saying stuff like, "ladies should do kirtan in Harmandir Sahib" or "Stop using milk to clean the gold in Harmandir Sahib and use chemical sprays." And people listen to these guys, cuz they seem to be "modern" and just add on to their ego. I am straying a bit off topic, but this is important, we must not forget our roots. We are sikhs. And a sikh simply does what the guru says. Don't listen to these manmukhs. Read Gurbani yourself. “Living by neglect and greed, the world eats dead carcasses. Like a goblin or a beast, they kill and eat the forbidden carcasses of meat. Control your urges, or else you will be thrown into the tortures of hell.” (Guru Arjan Dev, Guru Granth Sahib Ji, 723).
  4. Is it better to cut out diary and butter and milk as these are extremely high in cholesterol and cause heart disease, in favour of just vegan diet?

  6. When you follow a strict meat-free and egg-free diet, you get many questions as to how do you meet your protein and iron needs during pregnancy. I would like to share a resource that explains what we might seem to be missing in our diet and how to compensate for it. http://www.vrg.org/nutrition/veganpregnancy.php please share more resources that you think are helpful!

  8. WJJK WJKF Are Amritdhari Sikhs allowed to eat eggs? Personally, I do not eat eggs or anything that has eggs in it, but I find it kind of exhausting to look at the ingredients of a lot of food products just to see if they contain eggs. I heard from someone once that most of the eggs that people eat are not even fertilized so technically you do not kill anything. I'm kinda confused so can someone answer. 9. WJKK WJKF So I wanted to start a new topic about healthy yet simple recipies. But I wanted to take a poll if people would agree and like to have this topic? Thanks
  10. This has been bothering me for some time now. It is as the title says, why does our respect for life stop with vegetarianism? When I suggest Sikhs should consider becoming vegan, it is become of the horrendous atrocities that occur within the dairy industry. Cows are forcefully artificially inseminated so that they get pregnant and lactate (produce milk) Their calves are taken from them so they don't drink the profits and then slaughtered for veal. They spend their whole lives in chains and being abused. Becoming pregnant and producing milk so often that raw milk is full of blood, puss and infection. They are injected with hormones and bred so that their udders swell to unnatural sizes, causing them immense pain, just so they are able to produce more.. Is this right? Can Sikhi justify this? I've reached a point where I've started to laugh at Sikhs that claim to be righteous because they are vegetarian because to kill for meat is wrong, but don't want to hear about dairy abuse. Is torturing for milk acceptable? It would be more humane to just kill the animal and take its meat rather than let it live and make it suffer! Perhaps Guruji never condemned the use of milk because perhaps in their time it was different. Perhaps there was not this evil level of greed that exists today. People just took what they needed/could from their farm cows. But times have changed and the treatment of cows in dairy farms is absolutely barbaric. How can we as Sikhs allow this to happen? The truth about dairy is no secret. There are volumes of information available, just as there are about the truth of meat industries. Yet why have Sikhs not taken an official stand to no longer be part of this cruelty? How can we happily be just vegetarian when true respect and value for life comes from being vegan?

    Bee's Wax

So I've noticed in more and more sweets and other foods they're using bees wax. Is this ok to consume as a vegetarian? Does it harm the animal?

    Question On Diet

First of all let me say that I don't want this to turn into an argument about meat vs vegetarian, I just want to ask a question. I turned vegetarian two months ago as I have become a lot more interested in Sikhi and used to be nastik. Anyway my family and group of friends all eat meat daily and have started to make fun of me and call me a "vashnu". When I asked them what it means they didn't explain and just kept calling it to me. People keep saying to me to eat meat and saying you're young you need to eat meat and eggs to grow. I have three questions. 1. What is a vashnu and why do they call me this. 2. Will stopping meat affect my growth and health? 3. Do eggs count as meat. What is argument behind this. Thank you to Sikh Sangat for providing a website where confused youth can ask for help.

  14. VJKK VJKF I'm 16 and I hope to be blessed with amrit in the future. A question I had was, are most amrit dhari's vegetarian or vegan? Everyone gives me different opinions on what's right and wrong. I'm willing to become vegan, but I want to hear more about the topic first. Thanks.
  15. Gurfateh ji. Thinking of going Italy this year. One question that has been bugging me is, is the buffalo mozzarella over there suitable for vegetarians? As it seems that's what they use on pizza which would be a staple. Thanks in advance

    Eating Meat.

could somebody please explain to my whether or not sikhs are allowed to eat meat or not. i watched a you-tube video where the sikh man (was an american gora) said you should eat whatever you feel like eating. i did other research and it says that sikhs are not allowed to eat halal meat / kosher meat. they can eat jhatka meat. my family says sikhs cannot eat meat as animals are Gods creation and it is disrespectful to eat it. what is the right option?
