Indian Sikhs furious after relics sent to Canada to raise funds

NEW DELHI (AFP) - The caretaker of a Sikh museum-cum-shrine in India is to be punished for sending relics belonging to one of the religion's most important saints to Canada to raise donations, Sikh leaders said.

The Shiromani Gurdwara Prabhandak Committee (SGPC, Sikh Temple Management Committee) said Gursewak Singh Sodhi had sent the relics to Canada from a shrine in Dhilwana Kalan village, in the Moga district of India's northern Punjab state on September 5.

The SGPC said Sodhi had "really hurt" the sentiments of India's Sikh community by sending the clothes and a turban worn by their 17th century soldier-saint Guru Gobind Singh.

"These holy articles were secretly sent from India and exhibited in Canada to collect huge offerings of money and gold," SGPC official Jagjit Singh Brar told reporters.

"We visited Dhilwana Kalan village and have met Sodhi's family who admitted that the articles were shifted without our permission. The relics will now be brought back to India," he added.

The SGPC has said the Sodhi family will be served "Tankha" or religious punishment which it has so far not specified. Sodhi himself is reportedly in hiding.
