Lectureship in the Study of Religions (Contemporary South Asian Religions)

Job Posted: 19 Apr 2011

Closing Date for Applications: 27 May 2011

College: College of Arts, Celtic Studies & Social Sciences

Contract Type: Fixed Term Whole-Time

Job Type: Academic

Salary: €31,821 – €51,270 [new entrants 2011]

Applications from suitably qualified candidates are invited for the post of Lecturer in the Study of Religions with research and teaching expertise in contemporary (19th-21st century) South Asian religions. This is a three year fixed term post.

This is a unique opportunity to contribute to the development of Ireland’s first academic unit devoted to the multidisciplinary, cross-cultural academic study of religions. We are looking for a highly qualified and motivated lecturer who will contribute to the discipline’s excellent research profile and draw local and international students at all levels to the study of religions at UCC. The discipline at UCC is expected to grow substantially over the next 10 years.

‘South Asian religions’ should be understood in its broadest sense. The intention is that the appointment of a specialist in South Asian religions will considerably extend the fields of teaching and research supervision available at UCC, rather than duplicate existing areas. Current staff profiles including research and teaching interests can be found at http://www.ucc.ie/en/studyofreligions/Staff/

Essential criteria include a relevant (completed) PhD, significant research achievement in contemporary South Asian religions in the context of the academic study of religions, ability to teach across the range of South Asian religions and to lead, or contribute substantially to, teaching on other topics (examples might be religion and: gender, law, or politics) in the study of religions.

The post is available from 1 September 2011 or at a date to be agreed.

Interviews for this post are expected to be held on 11 July 2011.

Salary scale: €31,821 – €51,270 [new entrants 2011]

I'm just a poor boy from a poor family as the song goes.

One day, God willing, I'll do a PhD but currently I'm probably too dense for such a position and certainly not qualified.

Gives me something to aim for I guess.

Would be nice if we had one of our more independent spirited brothers/sisters in the role though. This would be the ideal platform to address some of the Anglocentric representations (read skews) of the faith and our itihaas.
