'84 riots: Sikh body to move international court

A Sikh body on Thursday said it planned to move the International Court of Justice "to seek justice" for the 1984 riots in which thousands of members of the community were killed.

"The entire Sikh community from across the world will join hands to approach the international court, because we have been denied justice," All India Sikh Conference (AISC) president GS Babbar said.

In 1984, some 3,000 Sikhs were killed following the assassination of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards.

The AISC is spearheading the protest against the Government and has alleged that the Supreme Court had failed to give justice to the Sikh community.

"We are coming out with a documentary on the Sikhs during the riots that will be dubbed in English, French, Hindi and Punjabi. This film is an attempt to tell the world about the truth behind the riots," said Babbar.

"I find it very disturbing that courts take suo moto action in cases reported but no one has ever thought of the Sikhs who died in the 1984 riots."

The AISC also plans to organise countrywide protests to garner support for its demand.

About time we went international with this. The judiciary in India has had long enough to sort this matter but obviously due to political affiliations cannot be bothered to serve justice to the victims.

All these years, all we have had are pointless commissions who have done jack 5hit. It is a shame that the SGPC and Akali Dal only rake the issue up near election times as they like to use it as a ploy to win votes. After the elections the victims are once again forgotten for a another few years.

Badal could have put considerable pressure to get justice for the victims when his Akali Dal were part of the NDA. But he was far too busy building his son up than worrying about the victims of 84.
