Young Sikhs from across the UK congregated in Leicester over the night of 4th and 5th Feb 05 in support of the Tsunami Appeal. The youngsters united their thoughts and prayers in hope for the victims of the Asian Tsunami which has claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands of people.

The Akhand Naam Jaap which took place at Guru Tegh Bahadhur Gurudwara (Sikh Temple) in Leicester bought together Sikhs from across the country all of who prayed continuously for 18 hours and managed to raise £2,387.

The event which was organised by Youngsters from the Midlands was also attended by representatives from United Sikhs and Khalsa Aid. Two Sikh charities actively involved in the aid efforts.

Youngsters felt it important to play their part in raising funds that would ultimately go some way in helping those whose lives have been devastated by the events of Boxing Day.

The US Geological Survey said the earthquake, west of the Indonesian island of Sumatra measured 9.0 on the Richter Scale, making it the largest earthquake worldwide in four decades.

One of the youngsters present on the night said "As Sikhs it is our duty to undertake selfless deeds which go on to help others. This was our way of doing something spiritually and physically positive for those who have been affected by the Tsunami"

The Akhand Jaap which saw hundreds of devotees, young and old from all corners of the country come together, ended with a presentation by United Sikhs about the current situation in Nicobar - where a majority of Sikhs have been affected.

A prayer for the souls of those who perished then followed. Young Sikhs Leicester representatives would like to thank all those who attended, and took part in the fund-raising efforts. A spokesperson said "This was a joint effort by all the sangat (congregation) and we'd like to thank all those who took the time out to attend. Also, a huge thanks to everyone who has helped with the organisation, each person knows who they are - this event would not have been possible without them. Ultimately, we would like to thank Vaheguru (God). For without the hand of our Lord over us, none of this would have been possible".

The money raised will now be split between two charities, United Sikhs and Khalsa Aid, both of whom have sent volunteers to areas most effected by the Tsunami.
