Co-option: US NRIs opt out The Indian Express Dharmendra Rataul Posted online: Thursday, November 29, 2007 at 0000 hrs IST Amritsar, November 28 The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee’s ambitious plan of incorporating 10 NRI Sikhs in its general house seems to have run into rough weather with the American diaspora rejecting it. US NRIs are of the view that they cannot let themselves be subservient to the SGPC, but would bow their heads before the Akal Takht, so the religious body should take the proposal back. Surprised at the move, American Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (ASGPC) chief Dr Pritpal Singh told The Indian Express, “I appeal to the SGPC to take…

What I find most interesting about these laptops is the obvious awareness these first, second, and third graders have of e-commerce. The above image (you'll need to click on it to make it bigger) has buttons for "buy," "order," "iphone," "itunes," "ringtone." Kids are much more perceptive than we ever give them credit for. But to remind ourselves that kids can say the darnedest things, the cutest line comes from eight-year-old Mandy after being told the interview would be published online, "I'm going to be popular! I should make a blog button, right now."

Canon HG 10 — It's Hard-Knock Drive for Us Canon's newest hard drive-based camcorder is prettier than a Tahitian sunset, and captures dazzling video that looks as good as any we've seen from a consumer shooter. The 40-GB hard drive will hold five and a half hours of footage of real-deal Full HD video -- meaning 1920 x 1080i -- for all the detail that fancy TV of yours can handle. But be warned, while the compressible AVCHD format may let it shoot more footage in less space, it’s only compatible with a handful of newer editing programs. — Matthew Honan WIRED: Stunningly gorgeous video with true-to-life colors looks al…

Hey there's something you don't see on a cell phone every day: a split screen. Well sort of. Technically, LG's Venus handset has two screens: a 2-inch, 320 x 240-pixel LCD on the top half and a 1.5-inch, 176 x 240-pixel touchscreen anchoring the bottom half. The touchscreen contains almost all of the phone's navigational controls and shortcuts to several applications. When you press a virtual key, you get a mild vibration feedback indicating your selection went through. Touch-sensitive controls are generally a nice idea, but they aren't always responsive on the Venus. On multiple occasions, a key press didn't register immediately. If it didn't respond after a few…

The following article appears in the March/April 2007 issue of Technology Review. By the time Klaus Draeger, BMW's manager of research and development, took the microphone at a Berlin hotel last fall, the assembled journalists' bellies were full of mint juleps--and it all started to make sense. Maybe the world's oil crisis and the threat of climate change could be sensibly addressed by using hydrogen as a transportation fuel. Draeger sketched the alluring vision of a future in which high-performance luxury cars burn hydrogen and emit mostly water vapor. The hydrogen could someday be provided by renewable sources of energy, he said, and nobody would have to make any sac…

One look at the Voyager and you'll get LG's message loud and clear: "suck it, iPhone!" From the large 2.8-inch, 400 x 240-pixel touchscreen to the icon-based user interface, the Voyager so readily resembles Apple's wundergizmo, that you might try activating it with iTunes. Okay, it doesn't work that way, but it does give the iPhone a legitimate run for its money. Besides having 3G, integrated instant messaging (AIM, Windows Live Messenger, and Yahoo), the Voyager also sports stereo Bluetooth for music headphones, and assisted GPS via Verizon's VZ Navigator. Plus the Voyager also sports not one but two LCDs. Open the phone like a clamshell and you'll see the second 2.8…
