In the palatial house owned by Gurpratap Singh (name changed), a 72-year-old resident of this village, hangs a very special picture. A group of men, both old and young, gather around him and his wife in a gurdwara, while he holds on to a booklet and the guru’s prasad. The picture was clicked on the day when Gurpratap “swore” by Granth Sahib that he would never touch liquor or drugs again. After being addicted to narcotic substances for five decades, he is now leading a life free of drugs and booze. In this village (which boasts of having a large number of NRIs), a similar “pledge picture” adorns a wall in every second house. It indicates the inhabitant neither drinks, s…

I mean i can understand wearing Sikh clothes in educational institution are not appropriate but barring turbans is bloody ridiculous! Washington: Sikhs in the US have slammed a state law that would bar teachers from the community in public schools from wearing "religious dress" including turbans, a move that may spark a racial row. In effect, the bill passed by the Oregon legislature and now on the governor's desk "prohibit teachers from wearing religiously-mandated attire, including turbans and other distinctive clothes by the Sikh community, in public schools. According to the bill, education officials and schools would have the power to "prohibit a teacher from we…

PORTLAND, Ore. - Should Oregon teachers be allowed to wear religious clothing in public school classrooms? You may not realize it but it's actually against the law in this state for teachers to do so and it has been that way for almost a century. A new law, the Oregon Workplace Religious Freedom Act, has reignited the debate. You see, the new law requires all Oregon employers to allow their workers to wear certain religious garb and take holy days off but teachers are still excluded. Gov. Ted Kulongoski signed the bill into law this week but members of the Sikh, Muslim and Jewish communities wanted it vetoed. And the topic has certainly generated talk. "It's not like…
