  1. I have seen some misconceptions regarding dharna keertan. There are some people that say there is good dharnas and bad dharnas. I am a bit confused by that statement. There are two types of dharnas that I have heard, and I believe that they are within gurmat. They are either sung about sikh history or translations of gurbani. A dharna about sikh history would be something like: sir jaavey tha jaavey mera sikhi sidhak naa jaavey singing about when the sikh bibis had necklaces of the insides of their babies hung around their necks and they still did not give up their religion. And a dharna on gurbani would be like: darshan satgur tera jee mei dekh dekh jeeva , which comes from darshan dekh jeeva gur tera pooran karam hoei prabh mera. Another dharna that is a translation from a gurbani tuk that Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale used to sing is: Eh panchi kala eh ehdei magar sheikari bahutei which is referring to the jeev as a panchi and the punj chor as shikari. The overall idea of dharnas is to do veechar of gurbani. Veechar of gurbani is a form of bhagti. Bhagti is sacha (truth). Things that turn your back to Guru Granth Sahib and sikh history are kacha or choota (false). A dharna used to spread sikh histroy deserves all praise. The nation that forgets it's history is not here today, nor will it be here tommorrow. vwihgurU jI kw Kwlsw! vwihgurU jI kI &iqh!!
  2. Bhai Sahib Jee, there are Singhs that used to live with Sant Attar Singh which I have met and heard their keertan. Sant Attar Singh was in a very deep vairaag state of mind when Guru Jee appeared and gave the hukam for them to do gursikhi parchar. Sant Attar Singh was not someone that would follow their own manmat and make up their own manmat methods. They were 100% gursikh. You agree that singing kavithas is not wrong. Some dharnas a similar to kavithas, so using a vaja to sing kavithas is wrong? Is it the idea of using a vaja that is wrong? No one used a vaja in Guru Nanak's time. Guru Nanak would sing gurbani and Mardana would play the rabab. Does that mean that you can only sing gurbani using a rabab?
  3. Bhai Taru Singh had to face a test and they still got their scalp cut off rather than their hair. Today, the people cut their hair without even having to face any tests. They just go and do it themselves.
  4. I don't need to justify anything. Guru Sahib told Sant Attar Singh Mastuanei to do keertan using dharnas. There are people still living that have heard dharnas that Sant Attar Singh used to sing. Sant Attar Singh did not use any microphones and their voice could be heard in a 5 mile radius. That was the kirpa of Guru Nanak.
  5. Gursikhi has no relevance to age. Kirpa / Bakshish from Guru Nanak can happen at any age. Guru Harkrishan blessed a gunga to do arth of a Hindu text. True wisdom is gained through naam and is a blessing from the guru. Doing research and reading books does not automatically make someone a gurmukh. I would rather listen to katha from a five year old gursikh rather than a 60 year old kala afgana scholor. The shotei sahibzaadei had a lot more sikhi than most people that have spent over 50 years on this earth.

  7. Do you call dhaddi vara gurbani? Guru Jee kept many dhaddis and kavisheris and they used to sing in the Guru's court. - and Sant Ranjit Singh doesn't charge fees for doing keertan, but from personal experience I know that the person mentioned earlier in this post hardev singh of looloo does have fees set on his keertan. (low fee for average keertan, high fee for good keertan).
  8. I would just like to point out that it was a hukam from Guru Jee for Sant Attar Singh Mastuaney Vale to do keertan using the dharnas. vwihgurU jI kw Kwlsw! vwihgurU jI kI &iqh!!

  11. vwihgurU jI kw Kwlsw! vwihgurU jI kI &iqh!! This is from the website www.atammarg.com about the spiritual journey one takes: There are certain Do's and Dont's for the spiritual journey, called yam and Niyam. These are ten each in numbers as per details : Yam : - (X) 1. Non-Violence :- Do not cause harm to anybody, through mind, body, intellect or speech. Pray from the core of your heart, "The glory of Name Divine is highest. Let all human beings be happy by the grace of God." 2. Truthfulness :- Live truthful life and indulge not in hypocrisy. 3. Theft :- Theft of body and mind is avoided. Theft of mind means when you do some bad act behind the curtain, i.e. in aloofness so as there is no witness to your act, like act of adulteration etc. To conceal other man's articles is theft of body. 4. Brahmcharya :- Celibacy is an essential requirement for the spiritual journey. It is like fuel of the body, which must be preserved. Married persons should be faithful to each other observing moderation. 5. Patience :-Do not feel agitated over trifles. Patience brings power- Saints must have patience in abundance. 6. Forgiveness :- When you have the strength to harm somebody, but you forgive him and don't harm him, you are on the right path. 7. Mercy :- Mercy is a must for meditation. Those who -- animals for palate, cannot imbibe mercy. You -- today and you will be killed tomorrow. That is the Divine law. 8. Tender Heart :- Be of tender heart, and do not be stone-hearted or a hypocrit e. Don't indulge in rebukes and slander. Always speak softly, politely and truthfully. 9. Self-discipline :- Eat less and feel contented. Follow the dictum of the Guru :- "Eat moderately, sleep less, show mercy and forgiveness and love your prime possession, the real self. (Guru Gobind Singh) There are three kinds of food that we eat viz. pertaining to i) tamoguna (ii) rajasguna (iii) satoguna 'tamas' food, includes intake of meat, fish, wine eggs etc. This food brings laziness to the man. He is likely to turn away from God and his God-consciousness is diminished. In 'rajas' is included pertaining of spicy and rich food for the sake of palate only. Heavy and rich food leads to numerous diseases.' Eat a bit less than your requirement. 'Satoguna' food includes partaking of vegetables, milk, curd, butter and cereals etc. 10. It means purity of mind, purity of body, purity of speech, purity of clothes, and purity of thought. These are ten 'yam' principles THE TEN NIYAM (RULES) 1. Penances and devotion :- Yoke yourself to the service of humanity. Service is of three kinds ie. pertaining to rajas guna, tamas guna and sats guna. The service of Guru is at the top of all the Penances. 2. Charity :- Charity is also of three types - rajas, tamas and sats charity. In tamas, one gives away something in charity under duress and in anger and at inappropriate time which may result in sin. In rajas, one distributes alms to earn glorification. While in sats guna, one gives away in all humility with a faith in the fact that everything is gift of God. This kind of generosity is rewarded. 3. Contentment :- There cannot be full satisfaction without contentment. Unless there is contentment, the mind writhing in desire wanders in wilderness. 4. Theistic intellect means a staunch believer in Guru's teachings. 5. Worship :- Worship of the Guru. It should not be external and ceremonial only, but with all the mind and soul accepting Guru as embodiment of God. 6. Faith in the shabad of Guru. If you have faith in Gurbani, you will be rewarded. If you sit quietly with closed eyes, but you don't have faith in Gurbani, it is of no avail. Have full faith in Gurbani. 7. Abide by teachings of Gurbani. Mould your life accordingly. Don't go against the tenets of Gurbani. 8. Peaceful Mind :- Let anger not disturb your mind at all, even when provoked by somebody. Keep cool and have perseverance. 9. Nitnem :- Keep regularity in you daily prayers, meditation and recitation of Gurbani. 10. Brahm-hom means feeding the hungry Hom implies burning of 'I' and I-am-ness, effacing ego of every type. Inviting Saints and Gursikhs for partaking food is known as Brahm-hom. These are two disciplines - Yam and Niyam and third is 'Asan'. Asan :- Find out quite place, where there is no noise, and where one can sit comfortably without any disturbance. Make a seat (asan) for meditation and use this 'asan' daily for prayers and meditation. vwihgurU jI kw Kwlsw! vwihgurU jI kI &iqh!!

  13. Sant Baba Karam Singh Hoti Mardhan had 100 students. They all obtained brahm gian. One cannot meet God by merely thinking, no matter how much rational thinking they have. You are talking about people that have sacrificed everything for their Guru. 'Jinaa Saas Giraas Na Visrei Har Naama Man Mant Dhan So Soi Nanaka Pooran Soi Sant' Those that do not forget God, even for one breath, recognize those blessed ones as true sants. Khalistani veerji has a good point, the gurbani line is 'Brahm Giani Ki Gat Brahm Giani Janei'. Just like 'Mannei Ki Gat Kahee Na Jai' - The gatee cannot be described of the person that has Manneiaa gurbani. It does not say 'Brahm Giani Nu Brahm Giani Janei.' If I have said anything that is opposed to gurbani, bhul chuk muaaf. vwihgurU jI kw Kwlsw! vwihgurU jI kI &iqh!!

  15. It can be almost guaranteed that Kim Bolan will be reading this topic. Kim is probably the author of the original topic that started all of this. Sikhs have been known as a peaceful community throughout history. Sikhs are peace loving people. BUT, if there is a wild dog running towards you, you have to pick up a stick. Anyone that says Sikhs are terrorists is just ignorant. It makes you wonder what kind of people they hire to write in these national newspapers. It is true that Sikhs are always armed, and there is nothing wrong with that. In the bible it says 'speak softly and carry a big stick.' Even Jesus said to 'sell your clothes before you sell your knife.' There were times when muslim invaders would abduct the women of India, kidnap them and take them away. These so-called 'terrorists' also known as Sikhs would risk their lives, and some would even be killed, so that they could rescue those innocent women. Sikhs have lived through times when there was a price on their head, the only crime was that they looked like a Sikh, even though Sikhs have never done anything to initiate an attack on another person. Please read up on Sikh history before you write such rubbish in the newspapers. If you don't, well it is said that Dogs always bark.

The Eldest was bhai Udai Singh, second Ajaab Singh third Aajaib Singh, Ajai Singh and Bachchitter Singh. They were sons of Bhai Mania, who was a descendant of a Rajput named Mai Das residing at the village alipur in district Multan. Mai Das had abandoned the Vaishnav beliefs during the times of Guru Amardas (third guru) becoming his Sikh. He was also given a Manji (village alipur) at his village by Guru Amardas. Since then all of his generations regularly contacted the Sikh gurus of their respective times affirming their beliefs. Bhai Mania when came in to visit Guru Gobind Singh at 1692 he offered all of his five Sons for his service. At the same time (year 1692) Bhai Nand Lal of Multan also first contacted Guru Gobind Singh when he visited Anandpur sahib. These five brothers (sons of Bhai Mania) lived along with other Gur Sikhs at Anandpur sahib getting trained in martial arts as well as education. Then in 1699 on the visakhi day when Khalsa was born, all the five brothers along with their father Bhai Mania became Khalsa by taking the Khanda Baate da Pahul. After Amrit, Bhai Mania became Bhai Mani Singh and then he became a famous Martyr (Shaheed) Bhai Mani Singh of Darbar Sahib. All the five brothers lived and helped Guru Gobind Singh while Bhai Mani Singh was sent by Guru Gobind Singh to make copies of Adi Granth and to install them all over Punjab. These five brothers participated in all battles fought by Guru Gobind Singh against the Hill king doms around Anandpur Sahib. Bachchitter Singh is famous for his exceptional valour in the second battle fought at Anandpur Sahib. He alone fought a drunken elephant let loose by the enemies to break open the gates of the fort at Anandpur sahib. In the year 1701, the king of the Gujjars named Jamtula at the request of Bheem Chand attacked Anandpur Sahib then Sikhs named Bhai Bachchitter Singh Bhai Alam Singh Bhai Daya Singh faced him and defeated him. Jamtula and Bheem Chand seeing that they could not enter Anandpur Sahib decided to lay siege of the fort with emphasis being on cutting supplies to the Guru Gobind Singh, his family army. Guru Gobind Singh had planned these forts around Anandpur sahib with keeping water and supplies in mind, the biggest of these forts was called Lohgarh (iron fort). So, After a month or so of siege Bheem Chand seeing that Guru is not bulging became restless for an alternative means. They decided to let loose a drunken elephant at the main enterance of the Lohgarh fort to break its steel doors. Bheem Chand's friend from villge Jaswalia named Kesari chand swore that he will enter the fort of Lohgar at all costs. To face this threat, Guru Gobind Singh himself prepared Bhai Bachchittar Singh presenting him with a spear named "Nagini"., he and two other Singhs was sent to battle among the war cries of Sat Sri Akal. This spear that is named Nagini still exists at the gurdwara Takht Keshgarh Sahib at Anandpur Sahib. Historians recall that Bhai Bachchittar singh along with two other Sikhs came out of the Lohgarh fort riding on their horses. Bhai Bachchittar Singh galloped straight to this drunk elephant and threw the spear with such a force between the eyes that it pierced through the armour as well as bones of the elephant. Severely wounded this elephnat turned around on the forces of Bheem Chand and Kesari Chand. The driver of the elephant (Mahaut) fell down and it crushed many of the soldiers of Bheem chand and Kesari chand. Just then the rest of the Sikh army c ame out of the fort of Lohgarh and started pursuing the enemies. Both Bheem Chand and Kesari Chand were wounded in this battle. But this battle was undoubtbly Bhai Bachchittar Singh's battle. vwihgurU jI kw Kwlsw! vwihgurU jI kI &iqh!!
  21. vwihgurU jI kw Kwlsw! vwihgurU jI kI &iqh!! Prithia was composing his own religious hymns which he described as compositions of Guru Nanak and his successors. The ignorant people did not have sufficient intelligence to discriminate. Guru Arjan, therefore, felt the need to lay down rules to guide his followers in their daily religious duties. He made plans for the compilation of Adi Granth. For that purpose he chose a secluded spot outside the city which is now called Ramsar. He got a tank excavated there. Tents were erected for the accommodation. Guru Arjan took abode near the tank and dictated hymns to Bhai Gurdas who wrote them down. The verses were arranged according to Rags or musical measures. The hymns of the first Guru came first as Mohalla 1 (read as Mohalla pehla), then those of the second Guru- Mohalla II (read as Mohalla Duja) and so on. After the Bani of the Gurus, came the verses of the Bhagats or the Indian saints. The hymns of the Adi Granth were thus set according to thirty-one Indian Classical Ragas. When the composition was completed, the Guru then wrote Mandawni as a conclusion and affixed his seal thereto: "Three things have been put into the vessel- truth, patience, and meditation. The ambrosial Name of God, the support of all, hath also been put therein. He who eateth and digesteth it, shall be saved. This provision should never be abandoned; ever clasp it to your hearts. By remembering God's feet, we cross the world of Maya; Nanak, everything is extension of God." (Mundawni Mohalla 5, p-1429)< br> After this the Guru uttered the following Slok: "I can't appreciate what Thou didst for me, and yet Thou madest me worthy. I am virtueless; I possess no merit, and yet Thou Thyself hast compassion on me. Thou showest compassion and kindness unto me; I have found true Guru, the friend. Nanak, If I obtain the Name, I shall live, and my body and soul shall be refreshed." (Slok Mohalla 5, p-1429) A Muslim might never like to read a hymn of a Hindu saint, and by the same token a Hindu might not like to hear the religious verse of a Muslim saint. The Hindus did not allow a saint, born in low caste family, to enter the Hindu temple. This was the religious fanaticism prevailing at that time. Guru Arjan, therefore, created an ocean in which all rivers and rivulets could fall and assume the appearance of the ocean itself. The composition of such an ocean was completed on Bhadon Vadi 1, Sambat 1661 (1604 A.D.) and was called Adi Granth. It was by no means a bible for the Sikhs alone, but it is universal in character. It contained no life story of the Gurus but only the Universal Truth, each and every word of which was dedicated to the Glory of the Almighty God only. The composition of Adi Granth consisted of the hymns of the first five Gurus, Hindu saints (Brahmans as well as Sudras) and Muslim Sufis. These saints were: Beni, Bhikhan, Dhanna, Farid, Jai Dev, Kabir, Nam Dev, Parmanand, Pipa, Ramanand, Ravidas, Sain, Sadhna, Sur Das and Trilochan. It also contained the hymns of Minstrels (Bhats and Bards). These minstrels were all Brahmans and then became Sikhs of the Guru, they were- Kal, Jalap, Bhika, Sal, Bhal, Nal, Bal, Gyand, Mathura, Kirat and Harbans. It also consisted of // of Satta and Balwand, Ramkali Sad by Sundar and five Sabads of Mardana, the minstrel of Guru Nanak. On Bhadon Sudi first, Sambat 1661 (1604 A.D.), Adi Granth was installed in the Hari Mandar and Baba Buddha was appointed as the first Granthi (priest). vwihgurU jI kw Kwlsw! vwihgurU jI kI &iqh!!

Sant Isher Singh Ji was born of Mata Ratan Kaur, in the household of Sardar Ram Singh Nambardar, on 5th August 1905 at village Allowal, district Patiala. The parents named their son Gulab Singh. Nobody knew that one day this "Gulab" (meaning rose) would spread his fragrance far and wide. He received the basic worldly education from the primary School of village 'Chulela'. For higher schooling he went to his uncle at Patiala and passed his matriculation examination from the Model School. Thereafter the worldly education could not hold his mind and in the state of asceticism he became the disciple of Sant Attar Singh Ji of Reru Sahib. By the inspiration of Sant Attar Singh Ji, he was baptized and was renamed Isher Singh. Thus motivated by the life and teachings of Sant Attar Singh Ji, he adopted the path of devotion and from him received the boon of propagating Sikhism through "Kirtan" (singing of hymns). When on 21st January 1927 Sant Attar Singh Ji left his corporeal being. Sant Isher Singh Ji became sad and disconsolate. In order to overcome this despondency, he set out on pilgrimage. After visiting Machiwara, Kiratpur Sahib, Sri Anandpur Sahib, Sri Amritsar Sahib, Sri Nankana Sahib and Punja Sahib he came to Rara Sahib and settled here. By virtue of his devotion he turned this deserted place into a sacred place that has become famous the world over. "A saint remembers the God and helps others remember Him also" following this principle he devoted himself to worship and motivat ed the people to be 'Gur-sikhs' and to follow the path, shown by the Sikh Gurus. Self Percept (Atam Updesh) Why are you so engrossed in worries? Why are you afraid of some one? Who may kill you? The soul is immortal; it neither dies nor takes birth. The present is here and now, the past is irrecoverable and the future will be good. Don't fret over the past and don't be worried about the future. The present is going on. Why do you cry? What did you lose? When you were born, what did you bring along, which has been lost? What did you produce which has been perished? It is here that you gained and it is here that you lose. The man comes to; and goes from world, empty handed. What you own today was not yours yesterday and will not be yours tomorrow. It does not and will not belong to anyone. You consider it your own and rejoice. This happiness of possession leads you to utter grief. Yours is this world. Start from where you feel to; stay where you desire and wind up where you want to. It has no beginning and no end. You don't fear anyone, but yourself. You are the fright and also the frightened. Change is the truth of life. What you consider as death is life in reality. In a moment a multi-millionaire is turned pauper. Give up the feeling of possession, great & the mean; differentiation of friend & foe. Then all is yours and you for everyone. Your corporeal being is a product of air, water and fire and it merges into the same leaving behind neither blood nor bones. Still yours existence remains the same. Then ponder over what you are. Wake up! and become the eternal sons of the Almighty. You are the great and unique manifestation of Nature's power. All the divine powers are possessed by you, like a tree hidden in the seed. In fact you don't fear anybody; you don't have any worry, suspicion, pain or grief. You are His dear ones. Surrender yourself complet ely to Him. Always, remember the "Waheguru" (God) to achieve salvation. Let your life be guided by the saying "Whatever God wills, is good". Be content with the will of God. Remember Him both in pleasure & pain.
