  1. What is the significance of Shardh's and Navratri's? Why are they done? with what purpose? There are what I think are superstitions in my house as well. For example, my mom throws a fit if I wash my hair on Tuesday or Thursday. I'm told even animals don't put water on their heads on these two days, and if I do, it's bad for my brother
  2. ^ Well said :D That's an understatement of the decade, if not the century. I say it's next to impossible...Try doing just 10 Japji Sahib paath in a day, then you will realize how tough it is to do 84.
  3. How lovely, another thread bashing someone without making any efforts to contact the person in question...keep washing.
  4. Maybe you should do some research before posting such claims...
  5. Son, you have too much hate and anger for a 13 year old
  6. I know full well what the word akhand means, but thank you for your concern. If you put things in context, you may be able to see where I am coming from. Anyways, don't want to ruin the thread, you guys have fun.
  7. ^ Perhaps you should re-read the title - "Weekly Akhand Keertan Darbar"
  8. Must be a 12 yr old kid
  9. It would do you a lot of good if you thought out of the box for a change :D
  10. ^ Then the folks who associate themselves with the AKJ won't laugh when someone comes there with a dilruba? I have seen that happen before...quite disheartening
  11. immortalshaheed, please don't ruin the thread with your bickering, use the PM feature.
  12. Good point, although it wouldn't be so far fetched to think that at least some men might have brought their wives along to get darshan of Guru Sahib.

    Washing Hair

You don't "wash" your hair everyday, you only put water in them everyday, wash every few days. How can you wash without soap? (shampoo in this case)
  16. I realize that this guide is for Sikhs but even then more light needs to shed on the Uni's academic record. Things such as how they the Uni is ranked in the Country (World?), which departments/faculties are well known, what king of past/present/future projects are being done, maybe a bit about the professor's who teach there, etc... When I went to uni here, the Sikh Society was not any help at all, especially academically. Because I started off bad, had to put in an extra semester to finish off my degree.
  17. you know its so strange i was a huge Heroes fan at one time and then for some random reason I started watching 24 and never had to turn back to Heroes.... I really like 24 better.... go Jack Bauer...!! I seen 24, got bored of it. Heroes is more dramatic, with the super human power stuff :D
  18. I suppose you follow every single rehat...
  19. You are absolutely spot on with the fact that a good body is built in the kitchen. But it should be "Exercise will only be effective..." (not cardio). Oh and fat does not make you fat, carbohydrate, specifically excess carbohydrate makes you fat. That's the new consesus of scientific community; 20 years ago it was "fat makes you fat"; now it's "carbs make you fat"; I'm sure this will change in another 10 years. In fact, there are good fats that your body needs to survive and be healthy. Polysaturated and monosaturated fats are good for you, while saturated and trans fat are bad for you. So, don't avoid all fats. Circuit training type workouts will be extremely beneficial for you in fat loss. One could argue that this type of training is better at loosing weight than just cardio. Circuits will keep your heart rate elevated, which gives you the benefit of cardio. Additionally, since you are hitting every muscle in the body during circuits, you will burn more calories than doing just cardio. If you set up your circuit training properly, you only need to workout 3 days/week and with proper nutrition, you will loose weight. As it has been pointed out twice already, you can not spot reduce fat. Your focus should be decreasing fat (but preserving all the muscle you can) and your body will decide which parts become lean first and which last. Focus on creating a calorie deficit by increasing your activity level. Initially, this deficit should not be too big, about 200-300 calorie deficit per day is a good start.P.S. I never advised you to stop doing cardio. EDIT: 90 minutes per session!!! :o :o :o That is way too long to spending in the gym. When I was aiming to loose weight, I never spent more than 50 minutes (including warmup) in the gym; I was loosing ~ 2lbs per week. If you exercise for 90 minutes every day with a restricted fat loss diet, it's only a matter of time that you hurt yourself. I would highly advise against the long sessions. Don't spend more than 60 minutes in there (including warm up and cool down).
  20. Gurbar Akaal has already given good advice. I would like to add that even if your goal is to loose fat only, you will still highly benefit with weight training. Fat is "dead" tissue, it just sits there. Muscle, on the other hand is metabolically active tissue, which basically means that your body needs to spend energy just to keep the muscle you have. Translation, more muscle = more energy used to keep that muscle. Of course, energy is produced by burning calories. In the game of fat loss, it's all about creating a calorie deficit; # of calories in must be less than # of calories out; that's all there is to it. Research has shown it is better to increase activity rather than cutting calories. After reading that don't think that you can just starve yourself to loose fat, that will not work. Since you are new to the gym, you can loose fat and gain muscle at the same time! So take advantage of this and do both cardio and weight training. In fact, if you structure your weight training properly, there is no need for cardio It's a myth that you need cardio to loose fat, you don't. Yes cardio is very good for your heart and lungs so it should be done. But don't think for a second that you can't loose fat without doing cardio. As Gurbar Akaal said, you can't spot reduce fat. For example, if you want to loose fat from your stomach, you can't do crunches and expect to see results. You can only loose fat, your genetics decide which parts you loose fat from first and which last. Generally speaking, men tend to gain fat first and loose last from their bellies. If you have more questions, post here and we will be happy to lend a helping hand
  21. Yep, although Gurmat Sangeet tradition is being lost today, in favour of simpler music (not prescribed by Guru Sahib) so that everyone can do kirtan. How sad, what's next, we will say let's "simplify" gurbani so everyone can do paath?! :o As Bhai Avtaar Singh Jee pointed out, I am paraphrasing, "If it was up to people they would remove Siri raag (i.e. all raags) from Gurbani today. We have removed raag from our thinking already, but we couldn't remove it from Guru Granth Sahib"Unfortunately, there aren't that many teachers available who teach Gurmat Sangeet. There are lots who teach Indian Classical Music, but there is a difference between that and Gurmat Sangeet. I have also noticed that most people don't realize the level of commitment needed to learn Gurmat Sangeet. When I taught Tabla for a while, I used to always mention to people that they need to do 1hr practice everyday. Upon hearing this, a lot of them gave me very surprised looks as if I was joking with them! 1hr everyday is the bare minimum, maybe more. I only know of 2 places where Gurmat Sangeet is being taught today, both places are in India. There is Jawaddi Taksaal in Ludhiana and Punjabi University in Patiala. I can personally vouch for the principal of Jawaddi Taksaal, such a loving character. I had the pleasure of meeting him for only 2 days a few years ago and to this day I remember it very clearly.
