  1. perhaps you should leave meat etc if you are planning to reduce your weight.
  2. http://www.geocities.com/jeetkanwar/Sahibzadas.htm Paintings of Sahibzadas.
  3. This might be of somewhat interest: Website on Sahibzadas soon Seminar on martyrdom at Gurdwara If you want the seminar papers, you can try contacting IoSS @ www.sikhstudies.org
  4. rsingh veerji: - Everything starts from the home. I didn't tell my mom that i had become a veggie. But when meat was served i ate some other things. So gradually they understood. - We were a group of friend who use to hang-out etc and eat outside. I started at uni and detached myself from that sangat. when i meet someone from there now, i eat veggie food, they may eat whatever they like. - The new folks whom i spend time with know i don't eat meat. So start from your house. And gradually, to your surroundings. What kind of Sangat that we have is essential. They should be accepting/kind etc. It will make you firm in your belief. That's from me. Bhul chuk Maaf Jio.
  5. Thanks again. Yes, reciting Gurbani Angs each 10 times would be good practice. If someone can continue doing that each day for over a year, they may be able to do Santhya of Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji two-three times. that would be great. I think it is very important to dedicate atleast 1-2 years of our life for this cause. and go over again if someone feels they need it a second time in their life span. I hope Waheguru does Kirpa on cyber sangat (and also daas), so we could be able to do so.
  6. I have been wondering for some time now: Is Baba Virsa some kind of 'newage Udasee' with a turban? is that the similar case with Yogi Bhajan? no offence.
  7. That's why it is Harimandir. Hari = God. So, it is God's temple. no idols.
  8. Welcome to the board Gyani Jarnail Singh Ji! thanks for your words.
  9. It's where lord of the Rings was made  It has lots and lots of just natural land trust me the place is tranquil, peaceful, natural and beautiful...perfect for the khalsa! Bhainji, those words 'tranquil, peaceful, natural and beautiful' can also describe Norway, atleast outsite the capital. So, does it mean i am living at a plase 'perfect for the Khalsa' Donno, why do i want to go to Sri Hemkunt Sahib then? i think the place perfect for the khalsa is where there is sangat. if there is no peace, khalsa has the duty to enable peace. but then again....Lord of the Rings was kind of cool! :D
  10. wow! thanks for the reply AK-47 ji and SoGGSj  So SoGGSj Ji, before Santhya we need to fully understand: - Bhai Gurdas Ji's Varaan - 22 Varan from Sri Guru Granth Sahib - Bhagat Bani - Gutkas such as, with various Banis: Panj Granthi, Das Granthi etc and for Sanskrit one has to read 'Sri Hanuman Chalisa'. Its translation is available here: http://www.hanuman.com/cha.html I just found out that Sri Hanuman Chalisa is in Brij Bhasha. I read parts of it and it sounds like the langauge Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji used. The langauge is partly understandable if someone knows Hindi. - Bhajis, also are there any limits for how long a Santhya course should be, or does it vary according to local Gurdwara practices? - If someone wants to understand Gurbani, how long time will it take? Ofcourse it depends upon the willingness to learn and devotion etc, but still is there any "course" the way they have @ colleges, like 1 year/3 year courses. now i am feeling this is a stupid question... :D Again, thanks guys. wonderful... Dhan Dhan Sangat!
  11. to resize any image; you just click on Help > Resize Image...that's all i know of photoshop
  12. You have seen Singhsons ('punjabi simpsons')? Something like that would be really cool...but not funny. it has to be serious/inspiring etc.
  13. Bhaji, it is very rare that such things from Punjab come out in the hands of Sikhs outside. If you want it, you may try contacting Singh Brothers in Amritsar at info@singhbrothers.com. also check out their webpage. give them the information about the cd and they may find it. otherwise it is difficult. good luck.
  14. It was a great video! Lots of talented people around here...about a year ago there weren't many who used to make videoclips etc, now there is lots of Sangat. Chardi Kala! Anyone wants to make a video about Sikh Shaheeds of Guru Sahib's period, like Bhai Mani Singh, Baba Deep Singh etc. It would be just great.. Or, perhaps there can be fictional person with qualities of a Gursikh. I have heard that making a film about Sikh Gurus, Shaheeds, and famous Gursikhs is not allowed, like having a character playing the role. What about cartoons?? It could be the same way as the Japanese, who make cartoons of their heroes (samorais/nihongos)...awesome. I would like cartoon series about >Babbar Akalis< of 1920s who fought against the British, or perhaps the Khalsa Faujan of 1700s. there is no shortage of Sakhis, and that is perfect for cartoon series that are mainly based upon fiction.
  15. WOW! lots of Sikh websites on 1984 have arrived. We should update the list of Sikh websites. The video clips are well-designed.
  16. Waheguru ji ka Khalsa Waheguru ji ki Fateh! SANTHYA COURSE Cyber Sangat Jio, I was just wondering if anyone here has taken Santhya, from Taksal or any other group? Could you please share you experiences, and tell us what you learnt there. From what i have heard Santhya is basic Giani course where the Vidyarthi are thaught how to read proper Gurbani ('Shudh Ucharan'). Some basic grammar of Gurbani ('Vyakaran') and also meanings of Bani, such as Japji Sahib and Nitneem Banian are also given. I haven't taken Santhya, so that is why i am asking... So please tell me what specific subjects/areas you were taught. Do you feel that after taking Santhya you are able to understand Gurbani properly, and can you pronounce Gurbani correctly? Thanks a lot people!
  17. It is certain that lobbying would need money, lots! However, if we get a 'Global Sikh Politics Conference' that nominates american/british/canadian (non-sikh) candidates from various seats before elections and asks the Sikh public in those countries to vote for them by publishing stuff at Gurdwaras/Sikh socities, the power of votes can be used to get 'Sikh-friendly' politicians. And the org should only nominate those candidates that are already pro-Sikh. That way, in the coming elections, THEY will come to the conference and ask for votes....and tell what they will do for Sikhs. The only way this can work is: if Sikhs are united and have ONE common goal, that is equal rights for Sikhs, and political power for Punjab etc. So we need to be 'Sikh-centric' when we vote. I believe a common Sikh in Bay Area doesn't care about if democrates or republicans win. what he cares about is, if he can wear his/her kirpan, or if his son/daugther can go to school with a dastaar safely. so that is why the conference shouldn't support any parties! they should support LOCAL candidates that are pro-Sikh, either republican, democrats or tory or labour....you see what i mean? Good points Singh Jis. However having Manmohan Singh-like politicians is good, but i prefer that Punjabi Sikh politicians should not be allowed to enter such a conference. it should only have european and north-american sikh/punjabi leaders. those badal-guys from punjab would just make the situation worse. representatives of sgpc is perhaps ok. i don't know...it is up to you guys sitting in USA. in uk they have got it, and in canada sikhs are already ahead. Bhul Chuk M aaf.
  18. Very good points Bhaji. I believe it is very hard for Sikhs in US to get into highlevel politics. However, if they make it, nothing is better than that. But lobby-work is equally important. One or two Sikhs in the politics would make a difference, but if lots of mainstream American politicians support Sikhs, it would be the best. That is why i like the idea of organizations such as Sikh Fed (uk). There should be something like that in USA also. In Canada Sikhs are doing well, but it would be good if they also get some broad political organizations from every corner that are pro-Sikh.
  19. I was just thinking: - In Canada about 6-7 Sikhs/Punjabis are members of the parliament. - In UK there is a Sikh Fed that does lobby etc, and there are some Sikhs in the parliament. - Now, two "Punjabis" have entered the US senate: a Christian-Punjabi called Boddy Jindal and a 'Sikh' woman married to a white guy; Nikki Randhawa Haley. I believe it is hard for normal Sikhs to join US politics; you know what happened to Kathuria folks. So this is kind of 'well done'...just think of how many blacks have entered the US senate...it is wonderful that Punjabis have made it so far. Jindal is from Malerkotla and Randhawa is from Amritsar. Now, this means Sikhs and Punjabis are doing well in the politics outside Punjab. But the idea that Sikh Federation (uk) has is very good! they ask SIkh voters to vote for the candidates that they know would work for SIkhs in various cases. and they do lots of lobby work. In Canada Amritdhari SIkh have entered the parliament. There Sikh community is very strong. In US, Sikhs are scattered at different places...so it is harder. But from what i gathered; there is some kind of political power in Cali and New Mexico areas...not votes, but relationships between sikh leaders and politicians. So, what about a cross-continental Sikh Organisation that is based upon the ideas of SIkh Fed and even more that can "channelize" Sikh voters to the candidates that are pro-Sikh etc? it will work in europe and north america. All main SIkh politicians of the west should be part of it and also those who are doing lobby. So there could be strategic plans for Sikh/Punjabi political voice outside India. There is no need of a 'Sikh party', because there is NO chance they could win on their own, what we need is politicians, from every type of political background that are pro-Sikh that are in the lead. What you think guys? asking for khalistan-support etc is too much. i am thinking of MPs who atleast support the Sikh turban and kirpan etc. That would do a lot for Sikhs in areas such as france. so globally the sikh voice can be heard. 20. Sodhi is a 'got' or clan. Rai is not..it is a suffix used after the name. Guru Sahib's former name was Gobind Rai. But Rai was not his former lastname. In those days people didn't use names that way...for example. We always hear Baba Buddha Ji. His 'got' was Randhawa, but he didn't use Randhawa as his lastname. His read name was 'Bura', but not like todays 'Bura Randhawa'. In those days it was common to go by a first name and father's name. Like Bhai Bura, the son of Bhai Suggha etc. Heard of Rai Bular Bhatti? Yeah, the muslim guy from Lahore area...he was a Rajput, but his firstname was Rai.
  21. Once again i advice EVERYONE who understands punjabi to listen to atleast the punjab radio file! URGENT topics are answared there. VERY good views provided by Giani Ji on Guru Panth and Guru Granth. Be-hadd Kemaati Svaal-Jvaab Pargatt Hoyee Hann Ji!
