  4. The Mughal Empire By 1737, the Mughal government of Lahore had strictly prohibited the Sikhs to visit Amritsar and bathe in the holy tank. To overcome this restriction, Bhai Mani Singh applied to Governor Zakariya Khan for permission to hold the Diwali festival at the Golden Temple. The permission was granted for a promised payment of Rs.5,000 to the Governor. Bhai Mani Singh was certain that he would be able to pay the sum out of the offerings that would be made by the Sikhs who were invited to come. The Sikhs came in large numbers, but Zakariya Khan, under the pretext of keeping order, sent a force under Diwan Lakhpat Rae to Amritsar. It marched towards the city on the day of the festival in order to intimidate and disperse the Sikhs and the festival broke up at the approach of the Mughal army. Execution Bhai Mani Singh was arrested for not paying the stipulated sum. He was asked by the Qazi to embrace Islam or else face death. Bhai Mani Singh stoutly refused to barter his faith and boldly opted for death. By orders of Zakarya Khan, Bhai Mani Singh was executed at Nakhas, Lahore in December, 1737 AD. The Nakhas has since been known as Shaheed Ganj - the place of martyrdom [3]. This was a gruesome execution in which Bhai Mani Singh's executioner was ordered to chop Bhai Mani Singh's body to pieces joint by joint starting from the extremities. The irony of the execution was that Bhai Mani Singh had the last word. When the executioner started to cut into Bhai Mani Singh's wrist, Bhai Mani Singh gestured to his fingers telling the executioner that he should follow the orders of his commander with strictness, like a true Muslim. Very puzzled by the interruption, the executioner and guards asked the Great Shaheed what he meant.   5. You say she's isn't 100% on it, she's been initiated as you say and sounds like she is. She doesn't expect you to follow it but you already have been to a couple. What will happen is if you don't go you will be made to feel the odd one out and sit at home frustrating or you will have no choice but to go with her. I see this as causing future unwanted problems.   13. Kaur1984r ji this is like you are saying all are here for their bad karm only. If this was the case then all would be the same, eg: same education level, same financial status, same health status, same spiritual status. But according to one's good past karm they also receive the fruits. ਜੇਵੇਹੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਵਦਾ ਤੇਵੇਹੇ ਫਲਤੇ ॥: Jevehe karma kamaavadaa tevehe phalate: One obtains fruits according to the deeds which he does (sggs 317). ਦੁਖੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਦੀਆ ਜੇਹਾ ਕੀਆ ਸੋ ਨਿਬਹੈ ਜੀਅ ਨਾਲੇ ॥: Dukh sukh deeaa jehaa keeaa so nibahai jeea naale: God bestows pain and pleasure, according to the deeds done; the record of these actions stays with the Soul (sggs 581). Bad karm can be reduced or erased by simran and good deeds, but only with Wahegurus Grace. ਨਾਨਕ ਪੂਰ ਕਰੰਮ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਚਰਣੀ ਲਗਿਆ ॥੨॥ Nānak pūr karamm saṯgur cẖarṇī lagi▫ā. ||2|| O Nanak, by perfect good karma, one is attached to the feet of the True Guru. ||2|| The Gurbani states that all are under the purview of the Hukam. That also includes Karma. ਹੁਕਮੈ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਹੁਕਮ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥: Hukamai andari sabhu ko baahari hukam na koi: Everyone is subject to Hukam; no one is beyond (exempt or outside of) Hukam. (sggs 1). ਹੁਕਮੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਵਣੇ ਪਇਐ ਕਿਰਤਿ ਫਿਰਾਉ ॥: Hukme karam kamaavane paiai kirati phiaaou (sggs 66). But, we humans alos have responsibility. That is, to listen to our Inner Voice (ਅੰਤਰ ਆਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਅਵਾਜ, the Voice of the Haakam or His Hukam...), to follow our Bibek-Budhi (discerning or discriminating intellect), be established in our Mool within (Source, Origin, Jot...) which is all ਸਚ (Truth, Pure Consciousness...), to earnestly engage in Shabad-Vichaar to attain Divine Knowledge (Aatam-Giaan...), and so on.

  16. Hanji nothing wrong in watching TV, depends upon what one watches. A lot can also be learned from TV. Yup not let kids sit all day that's not wise.

  18. Again all depends on the sangat one has. If the families speak Punjabi at home then the youngsters tend to follow suit. If they speak English mostly they will follow that. All about educating, but where? If those kids don't go to Gurdwara or are in Sikh environments then how ? Depends on the parents upbringing too. And that they don't have much time to educate as they are working, so it's easier to stay in the same routine, as time maybe also be an issue. If you were the same, now it's there time, you've worn the Tshirt, so they are going through that phase now. TV and radio has been around for years, nothing wrong in watching TV, but now the Sikh channels are doing their bit in media, so down to them watching them, as in mainstream there is not going to be a change The Sikh channels and Internet has vast amount of knowledge, eg: Sikhi related Facebook pages etc. and this site ? Did u used to watch Del Boy lol
  19. I think she means Sharda pooran Granth, originally written by bhai Mani Singh, its been mentioned on this site before. And it's on scribd, but I never tried it, because of numbers bit, it's not what I could do easily myself.I believe end of day there is no guarantee, if the love for God is not there, everything is in Gods hukam with their grace.
