  1. I know that there are Afghan Sikhs that feel Afghanistan is their country but there are very few left. Is it not time they leave and let this country fester. If this country goes to the dogs (it already is), my people should not go down with it (my opinion )
  2. For real people, if something works in theory, but not in practice, it doesn't work. For academics, if something works in practice, but not in theory, it doesn't exist. -Nassim Nicholas Taleb
  3. Here is an example for you. Ramgharia Gurdwara in Slough receives a lot of homeless (particularly East Europeans ) that come to have langar. That is not a problem, however some of these guys are drunk and have drug problems and normally you should matha tek before Maharaj before you have langar. This is the protocol. It is written on signs in most gurdwaras (in Slough, they have signs in polish) Now there are going to be people who are going to take advantage of this and not bother with matha teking. What kind of precedent would this set? The fact that these guys come intoxicated, is that acceptable for them to go to the darbar sahib and matha tek? The fact that we are open and inclusive resulted in drug addicts shooting up in the toilets. Now if you go use the facilities , they are locked and you need to get someone to open.them for you to use. I have no problems with openness and inclusive but not for people to take the p***.
  4. You kind of misunderstood what I was trying to say. Perhaps I did not write it clearly. Yes Guru ji create the institution of langar. Yes we the Sangat maintain this but our goodwill as laid out by gurus to reach out to all gets abused. Nobody is trying to under mine this fundamental principle but we should not be walked all over.
  5. Because ultimately marriage is a business deal and political union and status comes into play.
  6. Proactive I always look forward to his posts even though he does not post very often. I always learn so much when he posts.
  7. Fathers can be very angry because there is a lot of pent up fustration stemming from their youth, you sacrifice a lot of your own dreams and ambitions for the sake of the family, there are expectations that have to be met and there is a burden of performance. Punjabi fathers have to be strict because in their minds showing softness is showing weakness. If you show weakness you lose respect and you get walked all over. Respect is extremely important for a man. However, because expressing your emotions/feelings is seen as weakness, many men turn to the bottle. You cannot even tell your wife how you feel because again you are showing weakness and she will lose respect for you. I have seen grown men break down in front of their mothers and sisters and have seen the reaction from their wives looking perplexed.
  8. If you are someone who has lived a sheltered life, under strict control etc and suddenly you have freedom this is what happens. Amritdhari or not Amritdhari it makes no difference. You should see what Amish kids get up to when they have rumspringer. A balance must be struck some how.
  9. Obviously you have not been reading the discussion between myself and JKV. Please re-read again. Funny how these studies at one time claim that all these are "taboo" in our community but all of a sudden that 50 percent are sexually abused. Slight bit of schizophrenia there. If there are any Sikh men that sexually abuse, they should cut their b**** off! However, this should not absolve Pakistani men off their organised grooming. By the Kom is spelt Quam or Kaum. Nice try Abdul!
  10. I am sure they felt pain but it would have been dulled by the fact that their conviction was very strong. It was so strong that their defiance would over-ride any fears and apprehension they may have. When you have nothing left to lose all you have left is your guru you probably have a state of mind that says " F U". The mughals and their associates knew that they were fighting a losing battle.
  11. Err this love conquers all comes from the west. Bollywood apes the west. Our youth in the west is going to ape what is in the west since that is their local environment. Some half baked copy from bollywood who aim to ape the west is not going to cut it. The only trend our girls follow from India is what the latest lengha fashion is going to be. That is one of the main reasons of viewership of Bollywood is that the latest designers put their sari designs etc on the actresses. Simran was used back in the 90's (early 90's ) by parents now in their late 40's. I know of quite a few Simrans in their early 20s. Our people try to be original but end up copying each other. UK Sikh youth copy other UK Sikh youth or other non Sikh UK youth, not India.
  12. I don't think Bollywood has half the influence we think it does. I think what it does is provide some validation to certain behaviours. I think there are things that kids born and raised in the west that would do stuff since they are influenced by their locality but some old school parents who anchor their morality on what goes back on the subcontinent. If things are shown on Bollywood it means in their heads that it is happening in India and therefore it is ok to do. I can give an example, apparently Priyanka Chopra is going out with some white American singer songwriter. If a girl from UK is going out with some guy outside her race and she has a parent that looks to India as their moral anchor she can.say "look Priyanka is doing this, why can't I?"
  13. The reason you feel cynical is because like many Sikhs we are idealists. We are taught to want to look at the best of humanity . When we see the complete opposite, it creates some kind of cognitive dissonance. This means that with some of our people ,we double down and refuse to see the worst of what humanity can be. The other section of our people become very cynical and see only the worst. It is either black or white. The reality is that there are shades of grey. In Sikhi, we need to get beyond this duality of thinking. One person can show the best and the worst of humanity. In Sikhi, we get beyond duality with miri-piri, nirgun sargun, sant sipahi etc. You will see this in politics as well. One person can see perfectly corteous and will be stabbing you in the back at the same time. Our punjabi culture understands this very well, however our Sikh side seems to bypass this understanding, probably because we have to lower ourselves to play these kind of games.
  14. He'd be the type to put the oxygen mask if it is a muslim.first. If it was a Sikh, he will put the oxygen on himself first and throw the Sikh out of the plane. All in the name of equality.
  15. Let's look at all of the players and see what kind of strategy we can deploy. BJP/RSS/Hindutva/Shiv Sena types Christian Missionaries Islamic fundamentalists Sikhs in Punjab Sikhs outside Punjab How do all these groups work together and against each other.
  16. Well she has reaped what she has sown. These type of women are the type that get married to convicts in prison. Her badboy turning into a ISIS fighter must be such a turn on for her that she would buy this stuff for him.
  17. On PTC Punjabi they had "Mr Punjab" and the majority of the contestants were Sardars.
  18. What tends to happen in regards to innovation is that it is not always a straightforward process. The Japanese took many western processes (they were called copy cats in 50s and 60's ) , which they mastered before they were able to bring in innovation from their own cultural imprint. For example, we Sikhs originally were not a fighting race. We were sparrows and we had to learn from others before we became hawks. We weren't traditionally horseriders but we became better horsemen than.the Central Asians and then we developed our own styles. They say necessity is the mother of invention and as Sikhs we learnt how to fight and developed new techniques in regards to hit and run tactics etc. The SAS copied a lot of Sikh techniques which they still use to this day. What is written down and theorised in books is what tried out in practice first.
