    Provocation

While the guy certainly deserved an <banned word filter activated>-kicking You need to think about what's best for yourself. Society is much more litigious now than it used to be. It is not worth it to go to jail or get a criminal record over an incident like this. Besides that, we are modeling appropriate behaviour in society for those younger than us. We need to model examples of Singhs being smart in the world, rather than reacting based on baser instincts. I'm not contradicting myself, while he deserved an <banned word filter activated>-kicking, there is a higher standard for Singhs. There is the option of ignoring him, walking away, or talking to him. I realise that all of these options were not open to you in this situation. So the question is, while living in a litigious society with potentially harsh punishments for actions like yours, how do we deal with people who will harass us almost up to the level of violence, but won't cross that line??? My recommendation, learn the thousand yard stare. You probably already have it down. Just stare into his eyes, be silent, and wait for the guy to chicken out and leave you alone. Of course, he may fight you, but then you have gained the legal right (depending on local laws) to defend yourself!!! enjoy it. but not too much This tactic has worked well for me in a number of situations like this. Of course, I'm not disputing that teaching people about sikhi and resolving things peacefully is better, but sometimes that option is not open to us. Another thing I'd like to add. To succeed on Gurmat marg, there is a need to be able to tolerate great insult while remaining shantmai (peaceful) inside. I'm not always there myself, but it is essential to aim for this, and not use empty justifications of our aggression as many do. fareedhaa burae dhaa bhalaa kar gusaa man n hataae | Fareed, answer evil with goodness; do not fill your mind with anger. dhaehee rog n lagee palai sabh kish paae |78| Your body shall not suffer from any disease, and you shall obtain everything. ||78|| fareedhaa jo thai maaran mukeeaa thinaa n maarae ghunm | Fareed, do not turn around and strike those who strike you with their fists. aapanarrai ghar jaaeeai pair thinaa dhae chunm |7| Kiss their feet, and return to your own home. ||7|| This is far more advanced than engaging in violence. Generally, I try to follow this for personal insults etc. But if someone disparages the Guru, then after exhausting other options, there remains the option of the thousand yard stare... Again, it's all about self control. The more control over ourselves we have, the more options we have to react intelligently in situation. one last point, it may be illegal to go too far with this. what i mean is, once the situation is over and done with, the situation is over and done with.... don't prolong it as there can be legal consequences, and it's also may be somewhat petty. You can probably tell that much of my post is aimed to the general audience and not directly to you.
  2. very interesting. i had thought they lived in america. could you let me know which city in canada they spend time in, and when?
  3. doesn't baba inderjit singh ji live in north america somewhere?
  4. you'll find it here: http://www.sikhaware...h=1 http://www.sikhaware...20history&st=15 here is one of the posts by Kam1825 that sheds light on the issue, one post among many...
  5. where did you hear this about Basant ki //
  6. scribd was good, but requires jumping through a lot of hoops now... you can put up files on more flexible sites like mediafire http://www.mediafire.com/?tcapf58x463h8
  7. it also depends on how you present yourself. if i look ''hardcore'', people will avoid me, look scared etc. if i smile, or just have an open expression, they will smile, say hi etc. your clothes are a factor as well. what's on the inside often gets projected to the outside and reflected back to you. turbanated, the bach flower stuff is often better than therapy, very powerful, you can safely use it as a supplement to any therapy, while continuuing with naam jaap.
  8. i have found, in my own life, that if you accept yourself other people will accept you far more often. they will hate on you far less. as for some of the posh types, they may hate more than goray, but that's b/c they a bit of an inferiority complex. they want to consider themselves full sikhs, call themselves ''modern sikhs'' and call us old fashioned. deep down they know that's <banned word filter activated>, but they pile on the hate and lies to justify it to themselves. the only way to deal with these people is to ignore them, and live your life the best you can. another thing, my life improved when i started going to the gurdwara every day no matter what. even if i didn't really feel like it, i would just go in, metha tekh, and leave, just to have a daily routine going. if you do that and pray every day for maharaj to keep your sikhi siddhik and keep you in chardi kala, you will succeed. if anyone acts like sikhi is cool but you have doubts after hanging out with them, that means that on some level they want you to change for them b/c they are too small to accept it. i felt better after i ditched such so called friends. sangat is everything. also, to help you out, even though you don't need it and can get by using simran seva and satsangat, i recommend bach's flower remedies. they work on an emotional level and can improve confidence and self acceptance. there are different remedies for different issues. feelbach.com gives good descriptions. google around and you can find these preserved in apple cider vinegar instead of alcohol. there are no side effects. just bani alone could help, but i'm putting this up for other people reading the thread, as i've noticed that some people just won't make the effort to do paath when they feel down (not referring to you here).
  9. bani, sangat, seva will give you the strength to not worry about what they think. also, why are you interested in posh type girls?? since when are those kind going to put principles/dharm first? seems like you're going for the wrong kind of girl.
  10. keep doing ardas for maharaj to lift you above the chakkar of moh (attachment). also, simran, seva, satsangat, and listening to katha will strengthen your resolve. i recommend you read up on vegetarian cookbooks, and books written by health experts like dr. fuhrman and david wolfe.
  11. The mistakes have been fixed. I do plan on eventually using Baba Jaswant Singh ji's bisraam pothi for the Gurbani on this file. That way, all the mistakes will have been fixed already. But that is for sometime quite a ways into the future.
  12. just wondering, is the font size big enough for everyone to easily read on kindle etc?? it's size 24 font
  13. it'll take some time to fix these as i stare at a computer screen at work all day so sometimes get a bit burnt out when i get home, but i'll get it done. in the meantime, if you notice any other errors, especially from Dasam Bani, please let me know. i had planned on replacing bani from Guru Granth Sahib ji with Bani from Baba Jaswant Singh ji's bisraam pothi in a future version. the bisraam pothi has all the errors corrected plus bisraams added in.
  14. just jump in, it's the easiest way. if you can't find a good job, just take a crappy job for now to get into the routine of work and to get an income. keep applying while you work there.
  15. it can be fixed. please highlight the errors for me. thanks for letting me know.
  16. This is the full, basic Nitnem in Gurmukhi with an English translation. All the Banis are in line with the prescribed minimum by DDT. The Gutka Sahib includes the 7 daily banis, ardass, rakhya lei shabads, and a fair size selection of additional shabads. It's formatted for the Sony ebook reader, but this should work just fine on Kindle or any other ebook reader as well. Admins, please make this a sticky. Sampooran Nitnem Gutka.pdf
  17. it`s hard to know unless you reach some high spiritual stage. Sometimes life is going along fine, then all of a sudden bad things start happening. This doesn`t mean that our karam has suddenly become worse. it just means that some tougher karams have come up that we need to work through. Think of a bag of marbles that represents all of your karma. This is a storehouse of karma (sanchit karam). In each life, a handful of marbles (karmas) are taken from this storehouse. These karmas MUST be lived through (pralabdh karam). Some of these karams are ``good``, while some are ``bad``. The severity of the pralabdh karams is AUTOMATICALLY reduced through seva, simran, satsangat. These three things also burn up sanchit karam as well. nishkaam simran (simran done without any desires) has the most powerful effect. Although I feel that there is no way of absolutely knowing for sure, I can tell you from my own life that there have marked noticeable improvements in overall happiness and the ability to open doors since Maharaj had me do more jaap. You`ll probably notice a similar improvement in life once you make a serious effort to increase naam kamai, especially if its done in sangat. REGULAR meditation in sangat can cause a VERY noticeable improvement in quality of life.
  18. do more bani and read stories of the Gurus, sants, and shaheeds to make yourself brave on the inside. Educate yourself on Sikhi so that you can answer your friends questions and Educate your friends. If they don`t become educated on it and show some respect and tolerance, then they are not your real friends.
  19. <br /><br /><br />actually, Bani clearly states Gurmantr is Waheguru, andn sikh tradition of ALL groups agrees.
  20. rest. protein in the morning will help you wake up. tandahi provides nutrition for the brain (recipe is on the board somewhere). pranayam for oxygen also helps with focus, but it takes some days to feel the effects. if you reduce grains and heavy foods and increase fruits and veggies, alertness will also go up. for supplements, l-tyrosine can help quite a bit. cold press flax oil is also very necessary for the brain.
  21. <br /><br /><br />karam is from the past. the influences on your life now are from karma. you are still free to make whatever efforts you wish to make in the present. naam bani, seva, satsangat all improve our karams. meaning that the weight of influences on our life lessens. here's a simple example. let's say you want to regularly workout but don't. laziness is a habit, that's your past karma influencing you. it doesn't stop you from working out though. you can still make yourself go to the gym.
  22. it's in your karam. i used to worry a ton until i said to Guru ji that everythign is yours, tan man tan sab tis kaa. all my worries and problems are yours too. its up to you to resolve them. keep making efforts and he will resolve them somehow.
  23. i've noticed that people in general who have some insecurities get upset when everyone around them is not participating in the same paap as they are. for example, SOME get really uptight that if you don't want to drink with them. people sometimes want to have everyone doing wrong along with them so that they can avoid their conscience. seeing someone not engaging in the same behaviour makes it clear that someone has rejected their worldview, their principals, their life goals and philosophy, and all to walk on a harder path in life. it makes people uncomfortable.
