Warning over mobile use in storms

Experts are warning people not to use their mobile phones in bad storms as they may make lightning more dangerous.

If lightning hits a person their skin normally spreads the current it carries across their body, but using a mobile can focus it on one part of the body.

In one case in the UK a 15-year-old girl was left in a wheelchair after chatting on her phone during a storm.

It's very rare to be hurt in this way, but doctors are concerned enough to want people to be aware of the risk.

The chance of being hit by lightning is about one in three million.

In China, Korea and Malaysia there have been reports of three people being killed after similar incidents.

In Australia people are warned not to use mobiles or cordless phones outside during storms. UK doctors want similar warnings here too.
